2. AYY’s scholarships open for applications on 17 Mar-15 Apr 2014!

AYY’s scholarships are open for applications in March-April. This spring, the application period is between 12noon, Mon, 17 Mar 2014–11.59pm, Tue, 15 Apr 2014. NB! AYY’s pocket calendar reminds students about the scholarship application at the end of April but this year the deadline for applications is already Tuesday, 15 Apr!

AYY has three scholarships: exchange scholarship, community scholarship and study scholarship. The purpose of the scholarships is to support the internationalisation of low-income students, support community activities and encourage to successfully combine studies and the student life.

3. Apply for AYY’s anniversary committee by 26 March 

We are looking for members for AYY’s anniversary committee. You can apply to organise the 5th anniversary of our student union. As a member of the committee, you get to see AYY’s activities closely, get to know incredible people and, of course, make decisions concerning our 5th anniversary!

4. WWF Earth Hour, Sat, 29 Mar 14, 8.30pm-9.30pm – turn the lights off!

Aalto, AYY and Aalto University Properties challenge all members of our community to celebrate WWF Earth Hour on Saturday, 29 Mar 2014, 8.30pm-9.30pm.

AYY participates in the campaign by turning off the lights in the central office in Otaniemi and Arabia and Töölö service points and by encouraging students to turn off the lights in student housing and rental facilities. AYY also challenges the associations to turn off the lights in club rooms and events during the Earth Hour.

Aalto University Properties Ltd will participate in WWF Earth Hour by turning off the lights in three buildings on Töölö Campus and in the following buildings on Otaniemi Campus: Tietotalo, TUAS Building, Library and LÀmpömiehenkuja 2. Outdoor lighting cannot be turned off.

6. Reminder about opening hours and making appointments at FSHS Otaniemi Unit

FSHS Otaniemi Unit is open from Mondays to Thursdays between 8am-5pm and on Fridays between 8am-2pm. You can get a doctor’s appointment by making a reservation in advance.

You can make an appointment or get an evaluation on the need for health care by phone or, if necessary, during the opening hours of the patient office on Mon-Thu, 8am-3pm and on Friday, 8am-2pm.

Our unit does not offer emergency appointments for the public health nurse or the general practicioner and you should always make an appointment in advance. After the closing time, our unit does not have the required personnel for acute health care. 7. President’s Aalto Coffee at 9am on 8 April

All faculty, staff and students are warmly welcome to President’s Aalto Coffee on 8 April at 9am-10.30am in Otaniemi, Otakaari 1, Hall E.

Ilkka NiemelĂ€ who is the acting president during Tuula Teeri’s sabbatical will tell about current issues at Aalto. We will also have two new staff members presenting themselves: Head of Security and Risk Management Seija Piiponniemi-Lahti and Communications Director Elina ÄmmĂ€lĂ€.

The languages of the presentation are both Finnish and English (if needed). Questions and discussions are welcome in English, Swedish or Finnish.

8. Join Radiodiodi’s activities!

The May Day radio Radiodiodi in Otaniemi will make a comeback to entertain the May Day crowd! The radio has been a very popular students’ media format in the previous years and it is now

looking for new and fresh people to participating in the making of an even better May Day radio.

Have you always wondered how you would sound like on the radio? Do your friends laugh at your stories? Have you always wanted to speak to large audiences? Come and make a radio programme! In matters related to content production, you may contact Programme Chief Ilkka Rekola (ilkka.rekola@aalto.fi). If you already have programme ideas, tell us about them so we can implement your ideas together. However, we do not require finished programme ideas, as long as you are enthusiastic!

If you do not want to make a radio show, but you are interested in working on the radio, you can contact the Chief Editor Oskari Korpelainen (oskari.korpelainen@aalto.fi), who will tell you how you can help.

9. World IP Day 2014 – writing contest for students

IPR University Center will organise a writing contest with the copyright theme. Texts should address issues related to copyrights, such as ”The world without copyrights?” The writing style is free: pragmatic text, causerie, blog, column or fiction, all texts are welcome.

10. Apply for AIESEC’s Global Citizen programme

Global Citizen is AIESEC’s international volunteer internship programme of 6-12 weeks for students who want to do something useful and at the same time learn and develop themselves by living and working abroad. Through the programme, you can develop a local community by working in an organisation, school or doing volunteer work together with other international young people. Challenge your worldview, begin an adventure and experiece the diversity of the human kind while developing yourself in a new culture!

11. Engineering competition EBEC in Otaniemi on 29 March

BEST Helsinki organises for the fifth time a pre-selection round for the international engineering competition EBEC. The winners of the pre-selection will be sent to Copenhagen where the second round of the competition will take place. Teams of four will built catapult devices from assigned materials and claim victory with an effective resolution and showing good teamwork skills. The 8-hour event is free of charge and open for everyone who studies at Aalto at the moment. In addition to the 1st prize, there will be product prizes and the participants will be offered lunch. Please sign up before 12noon on 26 March.

2. Bachelor’s Graduate Survey is open until 21 Mar 

All students who have completed the bachelor’s degree at Aalto University between 1 Aug–31 Dec 2013 will be invited to participate in the Bachelor’s Graduate Survey at the beginning of March. The survey is conducted in all Finnish universities twice a year and the survey of this spring is open between 3 Mar–21 Mar. You can respond to the survey electronically and the link is sent to those who have completed the Bachelor’s degree via e-mail.

The Ministry for Education and Culture of Finland is planning that 3% (approx. EUR 50 M) of basic funding allocated to universities will be based on student feedback from 2015 onwards. In addition to direct financial impact, Aalto University will use the results for the development of education and support services for education.

4. Associations: Apply for AYY’s operating grant by Mon, 31 March!

The submitting of AYY’s association notices and the application period for the operating grant is ongoing until 11.59pm on Monday, 31 Mar. Further information on the allocated grants and more specific instructions are available at /apurahat-yhdistyksille/, which includes the scoring model used for the allocation of the operating grants and the grant amounts of the previous year.

The prerequisite for the operating grant is the association profile at AYY.fi, and the associations are responsible for updating their profiles. If you have lost your user name or otherwise need help with updating your profile, you can send e-mail to jarjestoasiat@ayy.fi.

5. Second application round of TTE-Fund in 2014 is open!

The second application round of TTE-Fund in 2014 is open! The fund may grant financial aid to all AYY members and the association within it. TTE-Fund supports visible activities that reach for the stars and make other people excited.

You can apply for grants from TTE-Fund in two ways: through the application rounds arranged approximately three times a year and through the continuous application period which is open during the academic terms. During the continuous application period, you can apply for the grants with the maximum of €1,000, whereas the amount of project grants during the actual application rounds is not limited.

Second application round of 2014 will end on Sunday, 23 March 2014, at 11.59pm. Instructions for the application and its attachments are available on the website of the fund at http://tter.ayy.fi/. The grant can be applied for with an online form which is available at: https://lomake.ayy.fi/tter/hakulomake/

7. Participate in the making of the development cooperation week! 

Are you interested in global issues? Would you like to know more about the interrelation of development and education? Do you have a secret or a very open wish to make the world a better place?

AYY will organise a development co-operation week in October with a central theme education and development. The aim of the week is to increase awareness of global questions and development co-operation among university students as part of a national campaign by the National Union of University Students (SYL).  If you are excited about or want to learn more about development co-operation, join our first meeting at AYY’s Central Office (Otakaari 11) upstairs in the negotiation room on Tuesday, 18 March at 5pm for more information!

You do not need to have a grand vision or experience in the field. Everyone (any background, any level of skill, any interests) is welcome to hear the info and share their ideas, even if you will not be in Finland for the autumn semester. If you cannot make it, just drop a line to teija.lehmuskoski@aalto.fi and we will be in touch.

10. AIESEC: Finland Youth to Business Forum, 28 Mar
Youth to Business Forum is now organised for the third time. We bring together students and companies and give them the opportunity to discuss with each other.

Speakers include Cassiano Mecchi from Google, Marc Dillon from Jolla and Alexander Stubb. Workshops are organised, among others, by Tieto, TCS, HAAGA-HELIA, Barona, ITIM, Sitra. More participants will follow!

2.    Hey, listen EU! Students’ euro election panel, Fri, 14 Mar – also live broadcast

The Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences – SAMOK and the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) will organise the euro election panel at 9.30am-12noon on Friday, 14 March, with a particular focus on issues concerning the students and the young generation.

Top candidates of political parties will participate in the panel. Panelists include Miapetra Kumpula-Natri (SDP), Anni SinnemĂ€ki (Greens), Sampo Terho (Finns Party), Nils Torvalds (Swedish People’s Party), Annika Lapintie (Left), Petri Sarvamaa (National Coalition Party), Anneli JÀÀtteenmĂ€ki (Centre Party) and Juha Richter (Christian Democrats).
Welcome to follow the hottest election debate of the spring!

3. Lost property stored at Otaniemi Service Point to be disposed of on 17 March

Have you lost something? Otaniemi Service Point has stored lost property saved from various events (mainly organised in Otaniemi). Lost property includes coats, backpacks, overalls, tailcoat, gloves, woolly hats, song books, car keys, etc. Please come and pick up your property immediately.
Uncollected lost property, which is currently stored, will be disposed of on Monday, 17 Mar 2014.

On Monday, 17 March, useful goods will be delivered to Otaniemi Recycling Centre and valuable goods (car keys, jewellery, etc.) will be delivered to Espoo Police Station. Dirty and broken goods will be placed in the bin. In the future, you can inquire lost property from Otaniemi Service Point for two weeks after the event in question.

4. Selling of junk bikes collected in Teekkari Village

Usable junk bikes collected in November will be sold in March. The selling will take place at JÀmerÀntaival 6 next to the place where the bikes are stored now. Bikes cannot be reserved in advance, so be fast. Prices range from EUR 20 to EUR 40, depending on the condition and features of bikes. Please remember to bring cash with you. Now is a good time to make great bike deals at the beginning of the cycling season. Unsold bikes will be donated to charity and sent to Tanzania!

  • Tuesday 11 Mar, from 5.30pm to 7pm
  • Thursday 13 Mar, from 10am to 12noon
  • Sunday 16 Mar, from 12noon to 2pm

5. I DO want to send mail to a member of parliament!

Participate in the promotion of an equal marriage act in the Parliament and approach your own member of parliament with a post card! You do not have to make one, unless you want to, as AYY will send a card on your behalf on the Equality Day (19 Mar). 6. WANTED: International tutors for the academic years 2014-2015

Enthusiastic international tutors are searched for at Aalto CHEM, ELEC, ENG, SCI and ARTS (architecture students)! International tutors have a very important role in leading an international group and integrating them into our student community. Tutors get to know new cultures, make new friends and have a great time!International tutors are also entitled to one credit point after attending AYY’s tutor trainings and returning a report. Tutors will get a tutor certificate and expense reimbursement, too. Half-a-day tutor trainings are held in April, tutor groups formed during the summer and the action starts in the autumn, when the new international students arrive to Finland. 7. Sano se suomeksi campaign’s last week starts!

Collect more signatures and return your passport at the latest on 14 Mar 2014!

Use Finnish in everyday situations at the University and ask the staff to sign your Sano se suomeksi passport with their name, as well as the date and place where you used Finnish. Return the passport(s) to the Language Centre, AYY service points or to the Student Services office of your School by 14 March 2014. The five students who collect the most signatures will get a funny and interesting book about Finland and the Finns. In addition we will arrange a lottery among all those who return their passports with at least ten signatures. If you collect at least 10 signatures, you get a nice official certificate, too. Don’t be shy, it’s the effort that counts, not the pureness of the grammar!

9. FSHS HAY FEVER THEME DAY IN OTANIEMI

In March-April, in weeks 12-15, we also organise the recycling weeks at Otaniemi FSHS. In the lobby, we recycle items that are in good condition to new owners. Come and find treasures in the spirit of sustainable development!

10. English-speaker-friendly show of Teekkari Spex on 25 March 2014

Teekkari Spex, the biggest student musical in Finland, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with DANSE MACABRE – a musical spectacle on the 18th century Spanish inquisition, mystical decadence and seduction.
The acting, singing and dancing are complemented with improvisation and every show is unique: the audience is able to influence the events that happen on stage.
This “spex” is a tradition unique to the student cultures of Finland and Sweden, so make sure that you experience one!

The special English-speaker-friendly show on 25 March will provide a summary of the plot in English.
This is a great opportunity to familiarise yourself with Finnish student activities and to brush up your Finnish!

12. Become a volunteer in Tapiola Red Cross multicultural group!

Tapiola Red Cross is looking for enthusiastic people, who are perhaps searching for a new hobby and new friends, to become volunteers in its multicultural group.

We offer: possibility to get involved in creating and organising multicultural events (for example on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in March), occasions to meet, getting to know with people from different cultures…

13. Prank sauna, Wed, 19 Mar, 6pm @ Rantasauna

Go to the sauna and get tips on how to make pranks at Rantsu on 19 Mar! ”I will not stop making pranks until I grow up, I have grown up when I finish making pranks”, says an ancient proverb.
So come to Rantsu on Wednesday, 19 March, to hear the best reasons to make pranks this spring and participate in the prank contest. One of the reasons to participate are the great prizes of the spring, which will be published in the prank sauna. 14. ** Kohti pimeÀÀ: Films by Pekka HyytiÀinen ** Kino Tapiola 17 & 24 March

Film Club Montaasi organises a retrospective of films by Pekka HyytiĂ€inen at Kino Tapiola at 7pm on 17 and  24 March. The event consists of two screenings, where all three feature films of HyytiĂ€inen will be screened, as well as plenty of unseen material from his career. HyytiĂ€inen’s friends and partners will come to talk about the making of films.

HyytiĂ€inen (1950–2008) is a forgotten natural talent of the Finnish cinema and one of those rare Finnish independent film makers of the 1970s and 80s, who managed to break through to the mainstream. His  films received plenty of praise from critics when they were published, but did not achieve commercial success.

Tickets for the event will be sold in the screenings, the total price is €5.
The ticket is valid for both shows.

15. Asian Film Festival in Helsingki on 13-16 March

On 13–16 March, Helsinki Cine Asian film festival will be held for the second time. The festival’s program focuses on East and Southeast Asian contemporary film. Included are films from Japan, China, Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia, and the Philippines, among others. The festival showcases films from well-known directors as well as films from new up-and-coming directors. 3. Inspection lists for AYY’s facilities rented on a one-time basis to become electronic on 3 Mar 2014

Aalto University Student Union will discontinue the use of paper inspection lists. From 3 Mar 2014 onwards, Otaniemi Service Point will no longer distribute old paper inspection lists.New lists can be found at http://lomake.ayy.fi/tilat. Lists have been tested on most mobile phones and they work flawlessly. On the same site, there is a form for reporting defects. The service points provide more detailed information on the subject. Next time when you rent facilities, please get to know the list carefully!

4. National student feedback survey commences again

The students who have completed a bachelor’s degree at Aalto University during 1 Aug– 31 Dec 2013 are invited to participate in the student feedback survey in the beginning of March. The survey is to be conducted at all Finnish universities twice a year, and this autumn the survey will be held from 3 to 21 March. The survey can be answered online and a link will be sent by email to the graduates.

From 2015 onwards, the Ministry of Education and Culture is planning to distribute annually 3% (approx. €50 million) of university core funding based on student feedback. In addition to the direct financial impact that the survey has, Aalto University will use the results of the feedback to develop education and support services for education. 6. WANTED: Tutors for international students for the academic year 2014-2015

Enthusiastic international tutors are searched for at Aalto CHEM, ELEC, ENG, SCI and ARTS (architecture students)! International tutors have a very important role in leading an international group and integrating them into our student community. Tutors get to know new cultures, make new friends and have a great time!

International tutors are also entitled to one credit point after attending AYY’s tutor trainings and returning a report. Tutors will get a tutor certificate and expense reimbursement, too. Half-a-day tutor trainings are held in April, tutor groups formed during the summer and the action starts in the autumn, when the new international students arrive to Finland.

7. Join us to create a great development co-operation week!

Are you interested in global questions? Would you like to know more about the interrelation of development and education? Do you have a secret or a very open wish to make the world a better place?

AYY will organise a development co-operation week in October with a central theme education and development. The aim of the week is to increase awareness of global questions and development co-operation among university students as part of a national campaign by the National Union of University Students (SYL). If you are excited about or want to learn more about development co-operation, join our first meeting at AYY’s Central Office (Otakaari 11) upstairs in the negotiation room on Tuesday, 18 March at 5pm for more information!

You do not need to have a grand vision or experience in the field. Everyone (any background, any level of skill, any interests) is welcome to hear the info and share their ideas, even if you will not be in Finland for the autumn semester. 8. Mosaic’s World Dinner on Thursday, 6 Mar @ Smökki

World Dinner is an event where hundreds of AYY students share a dinner together by bringing some food they have prepared by themselves and tasting the meals of others. You can participate in the event individually, but the easiest way is to gather a group of 2-5 people and cook a large meal together (meaning at least as much, as your group together would eat).

9. Calling and a dream job – how to find it and how to make a career plan for it?

The workshop will be held at Aalto Design Factory’s Studio classroom (Betonimiehenkuja 5C) at 2pm-4.30pm on Tuesday, 25 Mar 204. The workshop will be held in Finnish.
What is your calling or a dream career like? Plans are dreams that have a schedule. What kind of dreams do you have in terms of the working life? What is the best vision for you? Join the workshop where we sketch our dreams and make our calling into a career plan.

Doubting your public speaking skills? Presentation and debating is a sport you learn by doing, and a skill that anyone can sharpen by practicing. The programme is planned for first-timers, so there is no pressure and every student can easily step in. 13. Student information portal Into to require login temporarily

Aalto IT and Aalto Communications will be doing extensive development and changes to the IT system behind the portal into.aalto.fi during March. For the duration of the development, the service will temporarily require login (shibboleth) with the Aalto login and password. 2. Sano se suomeksi! campaign ongoing until 14 March 

AYY, Aalto University and the Language Centre organise a campaign between 13 Jan-14 Mar where international students can practise their Finnish skills in everyday situations at the university. Students collect entries to their passport when speaking Finnish at AYY’s service points, student restaurants, student services and other university staff. Passports are distributed at AYY’s service points, the Language Centre and student service points. Prizes will be raffled among the participants. The campaign will end on 14 March 2014, so you still have time to participate.

6. FSHS neck-shoulder muscle care course in Otaniemi

A muscle care course is organised for students who have neck-shoulder symptoms at FSHS Otaniemi Unit at the address Otakaari 12. The course is well suited for students who have mild neck-shoulder symptoms and students with neck problems due to occlusion symptoms. The course includes an educative section, as well as self-care and massage guidance and exercises.

The course meetings will be held on Thu, 3 Apr and Thu, 10 Apr, 4pm-5.15pm (2x75min) and they are organised in the facilities of FSHS Otaniemi at Otakaari 12. The instructor is a physiotherapist of FSHS. The course language is Finnish.

Students who have paid the membership fee to a student union within the sphere of FSHS may participate in the course. Course registrations to physiotherapy consultation number 046 7101503 Mon-Fri, 11am-12noon.

Cancellations to the same number or telephone machine 046 7101028.

Uncancelled appointments cost EUR25, otherwise the course is free of charge.

7. Technological Finland Youth to Business

Finland Youth to Business is an event held by AIESEC in Finland bringing together students, business leaders and experts in a space for actionable ideas generation.

This time under the theme “How digital innovation reforms Finnish businesses” the forum creates a platform for students to step forward from theory to business reality, understanding which competences are needed to be successful in a technological and changing world and how to overcome the odds of unemployment and actually influence the future whether innovating in companies or starting new projects.

Finland Youth to Business is free for all students studying in Finland at the moment or for those who have recently graduated and it will take place on 28 Mar 2014 in HAAGA-HELIA, Pasila Campus.

8. Students’ baseball team OtaKoppi is active during the winter season!

OtaKoppi is the students’ baseball team which provides its members with diverse opportunities to play baseball. OtaKoppi is also active during the winter season. There are rehearsals at Otahalli on Tuesdays, 9pm-11pm, where you can practise your hits. We also play floorball at Otahalli on Sundays at 4pm. In addition, the women’s team has rehearsals on Monday, 8pm. Everyone who is interested in baseball is very welcome to come and exercise in a nice company!

In the summer, OtaKoppi plays in the men’s provincial league, the women’s regional league and the amateur league. Informal summer baseball is organised weekly in the summer, where everyone can participate, regardless of their background! In late summer, OtaKoppi also participates in the Finnish student championship tournament with a team filled with positive spirit. You should keep these recreational opportunities in mind, as the summer is approaching fast.

FSHS reminds students that the Citizen’s account, which FSHS has used since 1 Sept 2013, is a convenient and secure electronic channel.

The Citizen’s account is a secure channel between FSHS and the students. After your appointment, you can receive messages electronically through your account concerning details related to your treatment (results, charges, care instructions, etc.) in a secure way at a time convenient for you. It is only possible to contact FSHS tourist information service through the Citizen’s account. NB! You can communicate with the doctor or other medical staff only when FSHS has first send you a message to the Citizen’s account.

8. Sign up for study psychologists’ workshops

The workshop is intended for students whose anxiety affects their studies and who would like to find tools for coping with anxiety. There are many types of anxiety, one is nervous to perform, others fear social situations or might be anxious about something else.

The workshop provides an opportunity to handle different situations and anxiety in general – from the participants’ own starting points. Course methods include discussion, as well as exercises done alone and in the group. The workshop includes six meetings (two hours/meeting). The workshop is led by Study Psychologist Minna Nevala. The course is held in Finnish!

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a state of open attention on the present. It’s living here and now. Mindfulness involves nonjudgmental conscious awareness of one’s feelings, thoughts and surroundings.

The workshop consists of five sessions. There are two workshops in English: on Mondays 9.30am-11.30am from 13 Jan until 10 Feb and on Mondays 9.30am-11.30am from 24 Feb until 24 March. The workshop is free of charge.

9. Antti Nurmesniemi design scholarships 2014 for further education for the academic year 2014-2015 are now open for applications 

Askon SÀÀtiö foundation has established scholarships bearing the name of Antti Nurmesniemi in the year of 2000, which support further studies or work abroad. Every academic year, two scholarships of EUR 17,000 are granted. Students who have completed the Finnish masters of art or equivalent degree may apply for one of the scholarships for further studies or internship. Students who have completed the Finnish bachelor of arts or equivalent degree in order to graduate as a master may apply for the other scholarship.

Aalto Aikikai organises a weekend camp on aikido basics in Otahalli on 21-23 Feb. The camp gives you readiness to join the weekly rehearsals of the club. The price of the camp is EUR 20. 12. Leisure and coastal skipper courses

Teekkari Sailors’ navigation courses in the spring of 2014:

  • Leisure skipper course on Tuesdays, 25 Feb-15 Apr, 5:30pm-8pm
  • Coastal skipper course on Wednesdays, 5 Mar-16 Apr, 5:30pm-8pm
  • Examinations of both courses: Fri, 25 Apr, 6pm-10pm

The leisure skipper course is the beginner’s course on navigation theory and maritime traffic regulations. You will learn how to find your way between the right signs, navigate on the map and identify other ships based on lights. Teaching begins from the basics, so previous knowledge is not required. Later, you can continue your studies in the coastal skipper course, which includes tides, meteorology and the use of the radar. You may participate in both courses at the same time.

You can join the courses by becoming a member of TRIP and paying the membership fee.

At Aalto University, about 2/3 of the students are men, whereas at the University of Helsinki, the ratio is just the opposite. Through AcademicSingles, you can get to know people at different universities in the metropolitan area. In this way, all profiles are always of high quality and authentic. The service allows you to get to know academic singles in the metropolitan area:

14. Participate in the international youth activities of the Finnish Red Cross!

The youth delegate course of the Finnish Red Cross is now open for applications. Youth delegates are the Red Cross youth members who are 18 years or over and chosen and trained to work as youth delegates in the organisational development field.

You may apply for the basic course of youth delegates if you

  • are between 18 and 28 years of age
  • speak fluent English
  • have experience of voluntary work from the Red Cross or somewhere else and you understand the difference between voluntary and paid work.
