Reclaimed proposals in the insignia contest were selected

AYY’s insignia working group reviewed the competition entries which participated in the insignia contest between 18 Apr–31 May and selected the proposals which will be reclaimed.

Sixteen proposals participated in the contest. The insignia working group heard expert opinions and awarded three proposals which will be reclaimed for the use of the Student Union. The insignia working group, however, decided not to award the main prize.

The reclaimed proposals and their designers in alphabetical order according to the name of the proposal are:

  • Aallon liekki – working group ’Kulttuurin viholliset’ (Pipsa Penttinen and Janne Peltola)
  • Siipiratas – Petri Savolainen
  • Three tree – Timo Tontti

The contest winners were informed about the results. The insignia working group would like to thank all the participants.

The insignia working group will continue its work and use the reclaimed proposals when preparing the final proposal for the Student Union’s insignia. AYY’s Representative Council will eventually decide on the insignia and other symbols to be used in the Student Union.

Lunch restaurant at Servin mökki will end its operations on 27 May 2011

Sodexo lunch restaurant located in Servin mökki in Otaniemi will end its business operations on 27 May 2011. Currently, there are no plans to launch a new restaurant and therefore it is no longer possible to have lunch at Servin mökki. The reason for this are the costs; the Student Union’s costs for catering operations have clearly exceeded the rental income.
It is still possible to have lunch in Otaniemi in Dipoli’s lunch restaurant on Saturdays.

Be part of the Aalto – China day 14.5.2011

How would you like to get to know Tongji students personally? Would you like to design a Chinese Pavilion for the World Design Capital 2012 year? Would you like to be part of a workshop together with Chinese students.

All this is possible during the Aalto-China day that takes place Saturday May 14th, at Salmisaari, in the Masters of Arts 2011 Exhibition space, Porkkalankatu 13 G. The event starts at 12 and ends around 17.

What is the workshop about?

The event is part of the Tongji on Tracks (ToT) project, 80 students from Tongji University, Shanghai, arrive by train to Finland May 10th and will spend the next 10 days here. Aalto University hosts the visit, which can be seen as a continuation for the Aalto on Tracks project that took place last year. The 10-day-visit is filled with program one of them being the Aalto-China day at MoA.

Aalto-China day consists of getting first hand information about WDC2012 project, learning about Chinese education and China itself, of “baptizing” the ToT students to be WDC 2012 Ambassadors and of a inspiring workshop to design the Chinese Pavillion for Helsinki and for the WDC2012 year. In addition to this the events is about getting to know each other, have lunch, socialize and enjoy!

The Aalto-China day is open for everyone to join but requires registration. Register here: http://www.doodle.com/6d5fwnq6ibagxa3i

Notables in Helsinki concerned about the future of students

Before May Day, the student unions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area turned to notable people and characters and asked what they think about matters concerning students.

Ståhlberg, the first President of Finland, and the horse statue Äidinrakkaus (Maternal Love), valued by the residents of Helsinki, are concerned about students’ income. “I insist: tie student financial aid to the index!” snarls the old-school statesman Ståhlberg, with a suggestive look towards the Members of Parliament who are pondering the government programme in the Parliament House. “With the parent’s increase, mothers could also afford to study” accompanies the tiny foal in the statue.

The discussion of sacrificing the world’s most equal education system to tuition fees seems to begin again. The stone faces are particularly concerned about the effects of a family’s wealth on the education opportunities of the youth.”Seven Brothers novel would not exist if education opportunities were determined by wealth”, remarks the beloved national author Aleksis Kivi.

The hectic modern life and studies trigger comments from the statues. “Why should we hurry and complete identical degrees?”, ponders Paavo Nurmi, a renowned Finnish runner. It is particularly worrying how young people will cope in the labour market. During their career of almost 80 years, the guys in the Three Smiths Statue have found out the hard way that working your fingers to the bone is not the main thing!”

With these wise words, the Student Unions of Aalto University, the University of Helsinki and Hanken School of Economics wish you relaxed and joyous May Day!
