Helsinki District Court issued a decision on the property dispute between AYY and KY Foundation

Helsinki District Court has issued a decision on the property dispute between Aalto University Student Union (AYY) and the Foundation for Economics Students in Helsinki (KY Foundation)  today on 28 Apr 2014.

According to the District Court, AYY was in such a position that it had the right to request the donations to be nullified. The District Court also approved AYY’s views on the fact that the decisions of the Administrative Court were not relevant in this case. The decision also showed that KY established KY Foundation by using an intermediary and there was secrecy related to donations. The District Court, however, stated that there is not enough evidence to nullify the donations.

”We are definitely disappointed with the decision. However, the process was necessary in order to clarify these issues and during this process, we have gained a broad understanding of what took place in the donation decision and its preparations”, says President of AYY Board Lauri Lehtoruusu. ”Now we have to review the judgment carefully and consider what is the best way to build Aalto community on a sustainable basis.”

The property dispute between AYY and KY Foundation began in 2010, when the Student Unions of the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki merged into Aalto University Student Union. In connection with the merger, it became clear that the Student Union of the Helsinki School of Economics had transferred over 42 million euro of its property out of reach of the new student union to KY Foundation, which had been established through an intermediary.

Students with an Aalto email address to be updated with Aalto address to Oodi starting from 28 April

A reform in the policy regarding the students’ email addresses will take place on 28 April. After the reform, all other students except the students of Open University and doctoral students, will have their @aalto.fi email address updated as their primary email address in Oodi.

After the change on 28 April, the students who have an Aalto email address will not be able to change or update their primary email in WebOodi. For the students of Open University, it is recommended that their email should be updated via AIMO although other email addresses than @aalto.fi can still be updated in WebOodi.

If students wish to forward their email from @aalto.fi address to another email address, this can be done at mail.aalto.fi according to the following guide:

https://inside.aalto.fi/display/ITServices/Forwarding+e-mails+%28students%29 (requires Aalto-login)

After the reform, the students can use the same email address in all services for teaching and studying and the reform increases information security and identifiability at Aalto.

Sano se suomeksi (Say it in Finnish) campaign prizes were awarded on the Finnish Language Day

Sano se suomeksi was a joint campaign arranged by Aalto University and AYY. The campaign was held on Aalto campuses for the first time in January-March 2014. The purpose of the campaign was to encourage international students to speak Finnish in everyday situations – and to remind the campus staff about the students’ opportunity to practise Finnish. Students were able to participate in the campaign at the Student Service Desks (OOP), libraries, student cafeterias, AYY’s services points and Unisport centres. International students collected signatures to their Sano se suomeksi passports from the organisations that participated in the campaign after speaking Finnish in everyday situations.

The Director of the Language Centre Heidi Rontu says the campaign was a successful step towards increasing encounters on campus. ”International students are bold to study Finnish, but the Finns also need to be bold and speak Finnish with our international students in order to develop their language skills”, Rontu suggests. Inkeri Lehtimaja, Coordinator of the Finnish language teaching at the Language Centre, says that the purpose of the campaign, on one hand, was to encourage international students to practise Finnish outside the classroom. On the other hand, the aim was to increase awareness of the possibility to speak Finnish with international students.

The campaign received positive feedback both from students and the organisations which participated in the campaign. Lyubov Milakhina, who received an honorable mention in the campaign, says that she felt she exceeded herself after having a long discussion on the effects of different vitamins at Otaniemi pharmacy – in Finnish. International students were satisfied with the open and patient attitude, by which they were approached in the campaign. The participating services also reported about good experiences. Täffä student restaurant signed several passports, and discussions progressed to small talk about the weather when making lunch orders.

”During the campaign, many international students could be found at AYY’s service desk getting a stamp on their passport. We have made a big effort to encourage them to speak Finnish, and most of them have in fact tried to do so. Some have pronounced a few words but some of them have been able to say a couple of long sentences. I remember one Polish man who knew 2 sentences in Finnish: I cannot speak Finnish and I am good-looking – and he if anyone did earn his stamp!”, explains Karita Nohrström at the AYY’s Otaniemi Service Desk.

On Mikael Agricola Day, i.e. the Finnish Language Day on 9 Apr 2014, the most distinguished students in the campaign were awarded. Indian Gaurav Das won the contest, who had not only filled his passport with signatures but also with useful phrases he had learned during the campaign.

”This fun campaign motivated me in the middle of the job application process during the darkest moments of the winter, when my job applications were rejected day after day. Now I have found a summer job and in my job interview I was able to demonstrate that I have eagerly studied Finnish”, Gaurav says. In the viewpoint of international students, Finnish language studies are important not only for understanding the surrounding culture and people, but also for their future career in Finland. Employers appreciate the Finnish language studies of international students, even if fluent language skills developed slowly.

”It has been easier to make Finnish friends along with the campaign. They have wanted to help me to fill my passport and they have been enthusiastic to tell me about the specialities of the Finnish language”, Gaurav praises the campaign and will continue the Finnish language studies.

Honorary mentions were awarded to the following students: Kseniia Belenestceva, Lyubov Milakkina, Dmitry Buiskikh, Tetsuya Kudoh and Vikram Kamath.

1. REVIEW ON THE PRACTICES OF WEEKLY AND ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTERS

AYY publishes weekly and association newsletters every week. The purpose of the newsletters is to distribute information to the community about the activities of AYY and its associations and partners.

About 10 pieces of news are published weekly in the weekly newsletter. News cover topics that are relevant to the student union members. These include, among other things, news concerning the student card, student financial aid and other social affairs, the university’s releases that affect the student’s everyday life (e-mail service breaks, printing services, renovation of essential facilities, etc.) and interesting current events about the community. Information concerns as many AYY members as possible. Sports releases are also published in the weekly newsletter.

The association newsletter includes news that are relevant to associations. The recipients are associations, not individual members. Association news can include, for example, AYY’s training or grant advertisements, recruitment for working bees or the releases of associations to one another (e.g. releases about reserving tickets as an association). From now on, all texts for the association and weekly newsletters should be submitted to tiedotteet@ayy.fi. The communications specialist and communications officer will divide texts to the right newsletter in accordance with the above-mentioned description.

NB! The deadline for the association newsletter is 10am on Wednesday (published on Friday) and the deadline for the weekly newsletter is 10am on Thursday (published on the following Monday). The delay between the deadline and publicaton is due to the fact that all texts are translated into Swedish and English. Please take translating into account in your text: If the event is held in Finnish, please specify it by saying that ”The language of the seminar is Finnish” or ”Participation requires Finnish skills”.

If you have any feedback/comments/development ideas in terms of AYY’s newsletters, you can send them to tiedotteet@ayy.fi. Communications Specialist Kati Penttinen and Communications Officer Henna Lahti are glad to receive any ideas.

2. PLEASE REMEMBER TO RESPOND TO THE ASSOCIATION FACILITY SURVEY

Numerous different associations operate within AYY. Some of these associations use association facilities and the rest would like to have one. Or at least that is what we think in AYY.

However, because belief is not knowledge, we are now reviewing the facility needs and wishes of associations, as well as the use of current facilities. Through the survey, we hope to receive diverse information so that we can take different perspectives into account when considering the use of facilities in the future. We hope to receive answers both from those associations which already use association facilities and those which would like to have one!

Please respond to the survey on behalf of your association at http://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/yhdistysten-tilatoiveiden-kartoittaminen

You can respond until Monday, 21 Apr 2014.
