AYY Crowns Manta on the Eve of the First of May – Wappu Appeal Ongoing to Raise Funds for Mental Health Work

Free for immediate release

This year, it is Aalto University Student Union AYY’s turn to crown the Havis Amanda statue at Helsinki’s Market Square on the eve of the First of May. The event begins with the cleaning of the statue at 5 pm, and the white student cap is laid on Manta’s curls at 6.00 pm.

The Cap itself has already come out of its hibernation and commenced its journey towards Manta. For example, the Cap has been sledding at the students’ Shrove Tuesday party at Ullanlinnanmäki and enjoyed the best student’s life in the world at various events of the Aalto community.

For students, Wappu is a joyous and rowdy party year after year. Unfortunately, however, research shows that from the year 2000 to the present day, psychological problems have become more common among students. According to the Finnish Student Health Service (2016), 30 per cent of students show symptoms of mental health issues. The most common problems were a constant feeling of overexertion, feeling unhappy and depressed, not sleeping because of worries, and losing self-confidence. The change in students’ wellbeing can also be seen in the Aalto community.

Last week, the Cap was honoured to take part in the first-year students’ Fuksipeijaiset, in connection with which Aalto University Student Union’s Freshman Committee opened the Wappupotti appeal to collect funds for mental health services. The original goal was to raise 500 euros but, with this sum being collected in minutes, the goal was increased to 10 000 euros.  The purpose of the appeal is to evoke discussion and to shatter the taboo surrounding mental health issues – and, of course, to support the important work of the Finnish Association for Mental Health. AYY also wants to remind everyone that in the midst of the busy and eventful Wappu frolics, it is important to take care of yourself and others and to ask your family, friends and yourself how you are really doing.

Before the eve of the First of May, there is still plenty that Manta’s Cap will get up to. It will be meeting with political decision-makers, influencers, prominent figures as well as Aalto University alumni. Discussions will be had on at least mental health, the environment and, of course, Wappu. You can follow the Cap’s journey and visits on Instagram with the hashtag #matkallamantalle.

Applications for the renovated Jämeräntaival 3 B apartments are open from the 11th of March to the 24th of March!

In May 2019 the renovation of Jämeräntaival 3 B will be completed and most of the apartments in the building are shared studios. Residents can move in to the apartments starting from the 2nd of May 2019.

The AYY Board has decided that all AYY’s members with valid right of residence are given equal opportunity to apply for the Jämeräntaival 3 B apartments. Lots will be drawn to determine who gets an apartment.

The application process for the apartments differs somewhat from the usual:

  • You can apply for the apartments between the 11th of March and 24th of March 2019.
  • The place in the queue for all applications submitted within the deadline will be drawn by lot.
  • The lots will be drawn within different score groups.
  • After the 24th of March 2019, the applications will continue according to the normal queuing process.

A shared studio apartment is a cross between a shared apartment and a studio. Each tenant has a personal room with their own toilet/bathroom and a kitchenette, equipped with a fridge, freezer, oven and stove. Keeping the communal spaces clean and tidy is the responsibility of the tenants.

Read the application instructions here.

Find out more about the apartments and send your application to us via Domo starting Monday 11th March.

Apply to the Student Union’s Central Election Committee for 2019!

AYY’s highest decision-making body, the 45-member Representative Council, will be elected again next autumn. However, the Council election does not organise itself, so we are in need of volunteers.

Would you like to be involved with making AYY’s next Council election more visible, resonating and participatory than ever?

The call for applications to the Central Election Committee operating at the heart of the Council election has now been opened. For example, the Central Election Committee decides upon the polling and advance polling stations’ locations, establishes the Election Committees, reviews the candidacy notices and agreements on electoral alliances and groups, conducts the recount of the votes and oversees the election proceedings in general. A member of the Central Election Committee is not eligible to stand in the Representative Council election 2019.

Applications to the Central Election Committee are submitted via the electronic form at https://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/kvl/.

The application period runs until Sunday 17 Mar 2019 at 11.59 pm.

Suggest recipients for AYY’s acknowledgements by March 10th

Do you know a pioneer, unconventional bridge-builder or a cross-disciplinary hard worker in the Aalto community who deserves recognition? Suggest a recipient for the Aalto University Student Union acknowledgement reward for 2019.

You can make suggestions until March 10th. After the suggestion period is over, the acknowledgement working group will propose the final recipients of acknowledgements to AYY’s Board. The acknowledgements can be given to the student union’s current or former members and employees.

Read more about the acknowledgements and suggest a recipient via this link: https://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/bling/

If you’d like to take part in deciding who get the rewards, you can alsoapply for the acknowledgement working group.

The acknowledgment working group receives the proposals for the acknowledgment recipients, discusses the proposals and proposes a resolution on the final recipients to AYY’s Board.

The group is looking for motivated students with different backgrounds. Apply here (in Finnish, translation coming soon): https://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/hakemuslomake-huomionosoitustyoryhmaan/
