The majority of the comprehensive schools in Finland are involved in the Tempaus2016

Bulletin

To be published immediately

More than 1,400 comprehensive schools around Finland signed up for the Tempaus2016 student project during the spring and summer. Comprehensive schools from the Åland islands all the way to SodankylĂ€ were involved. With the student drive, the aim is to raise the importance of comprehensive schooling in national discussion. The tempaus drive is the way of students to show their support for the change in comprehensive schooling and bring happiness and enthusiasm to study to school pupils. The President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, is acting as the patron of Tempaus2016.

The aim is to get 1,500 student participants on board. Signing up as a participant begins in the huge Tempausgaala on 20.9. AYY, the student union of Aalto University, HYY, the student union of the University of Helsinki, LTKY, the student union of the Lappeenranta University of Technology, TTYY, the student union of the Tampere University of Technology and TYY, the student union of the University of Turku are involved in the recruitment of student participants in the drive.

The participants in the drive will visit schools on Monday 31.10. and Tuesday 1.11. A pre-planned inspiring programme will be carried out in the schools, together with the pupils. The most popular programme packages have been ArkielĂ€mĂ€n pulmapakki (‘The Problem Pack of Daily Life’), which applies the learning of maths in practice, and Kids Try Science, the aim of which is to fire up the interest of pupils in science and technology.

“We’re excited that so many schools have joined in and can’t wait to get registration of student participants under way!” says Noora VĂ€nttinen, who is responsible for the communications of the drive, with obvious delight.

A large carnival will be arranged as the culmination of the drive in the capital city area. The celebration will bring together all the advocates of the training and those who are interested in it – and hopefully this is just the beginning!

Students’ move to general housing allowance must be clinched

The undersigned student unions thank the Government for its plans to have general housing allowance cover students. This move would give students a more equal status with other population groups and significantly improve many students’ subsistence.

SipilÀ’s Government decided to begin preparations in the spring for having general housing allowance cover students. The discussion still continues, and decisions on students’ subsistence will now be made again in the autumn budget session.

The student unions consider the move to general housing allowance as a necessary reform. At its current level, the housing supplement of the student financial aid is completely inadequate for covering the ever-increasing rental costs students face. As many as one sixth of students getting student aid spend their entire study grant towards housing costs. The situation is the most challenging in large cities with a high rental level. Rents have gone up, while the housing supplement of the student aid, amounting to a maximum of €201.60 per month, has not been increased since 2005.

It is of utmost importance that the move occurs at the same time as the massive cuts to student aid come into force. When around 80 euros per month is cut from student aid in autumn 2017, the need for a reform of the housing benefit system is massive. The amount of general housing allowance granted to a household depends on their home municipality, with €406.40 being the maximum.

However, the general housing allowance is not without its problems. Whereas the housing supplement of the student aid is personal, general housing allowance is granted to the entire household. Improving general housing allowance so that it is granted to the individual would put an end to internal dependencies in families and improve the situation of many low-income individuals in other population groups too.

Nonetheless, general housing allowance improves the situation for those who have it the worst: those living in expensive apartments because of the housing shortage and those who have no other income apart from student aid.

When other students move to general housing allowance, the subsistence of students with a family will, however, worsen. This is due to the fact that receiving student aid does not currently decrease the amount of general housing allowance. In case this concession for students with a family is not kept in effect after the student aid reform, it would finally be time to make a parent’s increase to student aid.

The move to general housing allowance is a big structural change that has a decisive effect on students’ subsistence. The transitional period may be difficult for many: while student aid increases for some, it decreases for others. As a whole, general housing allowance is still a step in the right direction as it directs aid towards those that need it the most, it is paid all year round and it has a better correspondence to actual rental costs.

Association newsletter for the week 35/2016

This is AYY’s association newsletter for the week 35/2016.

Now there is a great opportunity to earn some money for your association! Get a group together or join forces with other associations at the Sillis for the Traditional Teekkari Dinner Party. The fee is EUR 800. Read more in section 2.

We have received feedback about the noise caused by the use of Gorsu from the residents at JÀmerÀntaival 5 and its surroundings. It is important to be considerate when using the facilities, so please remember to abide with the usage rules. Please remind your friends to remember the nearby residents in addition to having fun. If disturbances still continue, AYY will change the time of use for the facilities to end at 23:00 instead of the current 03:00. Read more in section 1.

  5. Nominate new honorary members for the Guild of the Round Tower

1. To be noted in using Gorsu

After the summer, AYY has received feedback about the noise problem that the use of Gorsu has caused for residents of JMT 5. The walls and roof of the facilities do not block all the noise coming from the facilities, which significantly influences the comfort of living of the residents nearby.

For this reason, AYY reminds all the users of these facilities about the general usage rules for the facilities, in particular section stating that “Facilities are used in accordance with the law, regulations and good manners”. In addition, the facilities are in use until 03:00, but since the premises are in connection with a residential property, special attention must be paid to Section 4 in the Rules and Regulations of the Teekkari Village: “On weekdays between 11pm–7am and on weekends and public holidays between 12midnight–9am, singing, playing, loud use of a television, radio or stereo equipment and such other noise is prohibited, excluding a correctly performed teekkari hymn.”

Those who do not abide with these rules will be penalised according to the sanctions listed in the Usage rules for the Student Union’s rental facilities.

If disturbances continue, AYY will change the time of use for the facilities to end at 23:00.

2. Earn EUR 800 for your association: a temp job at the Sillis for the Traditional Teekkari Party!

We offer associations the possibility to earn money at the Sillis for the Traditional Teekkari Dinner Party.

We need a group of 15 workers at the Sillis organised on 12 November, from approx. 08-20. The job includes everything from the morning arrangements and cooking to cleaning up. The job will pay the association a fee of EUR 800.

If your association can’t get the required number of workers together, the job can be shared between two associations. It would be best, however, if one group could take care of the whole thing.

Registrations and inquiries can be sent to Yours Truly.

3. Join the Aalto Afterparty on September 6!

Would your association like to be part of the year’s first, biggest and most amazing event? Join the Aalto Afterparty!

The traditional Aalto Afterparty will be held on the Tuesday of orientation week, and as usual, we’ll have brilliant performers, fabulous surroundings and a great vibe! We also want to offer associations an opportunity to get exposure at the event and to promote their activities to new students in a relaxed fashion. Many associations are probably already involved in other events during orientation week, such as the Aalto Party or Otasuunnistus, but at these events, students may easily get confused with so much on offer. The Aalto Afterparty would give you a chance to stand out from the crowd and make a memorable impression of your association! To participate, all you need is an inspiring, spirited activity that reflects your association, plus the people and equipment needed for organizing it.

You can inform us of your willingness to participate by sending e-mail to afterparty Àt list.ayy.fi by Sunday, August 28.

We welcome you to make the Aalto Afterparty even faster and more stunning. 😉

For more information about the event, see https://www.facebook.com/events/533125386886320/.

With late summer greetings,
The Aalto Afterparty Committee

4. Arrange a checkpoint at Otasuunnistus!

Orientation will be here soon and so will the Otasuunnistus. I welcome your organisation to participate in Otasuunnistus on both Wednesday September 7th and Thursday September 8th. At your checkpoint you shall give the freshmen small tasks and reward them with points.  The checkpoints are open from 5PM to 10PM, and the afterparty starts in Smökki at 9:30PM. You can register your checkpoint until the 28th of August with this form:

The flats of Ida Aalbergintie will be transferred to SATO from 1.7.

The Student Union of Aalto University, AYY, the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, HYY and the HĂ€me Student Foundation have sold the Property Company Ida Aalbergintie 1 in Pohjois-Haaga, Helsinki, to SATOkoti Ltd. Management of the property and 164 rental flats with their residents will be transferred to SATO from 1.7.2016. As a result of the transferral, flats at Ida Aalbergintie 1 can no longer be applied for through the Domo system.

The rents for July will be paid on the basis of previous payment information and SATO will send tenants new rent bills during July. From 1.8.2016, the rent will be paid into the account of SATOkoti Ltd with a personal reference number. If residents have any questions about the transferral of the rental contract or other practical issues, they can contact the customer service of SATO directly.

Provision of reasonably-priced student accommodation near the place of study is a core member service of AYY. The campus of Aalto University is concentrated in Otaniemi and AYY is developing its property stock to meet the needs by constructing new student flats on the campus or within good transport connections to it. At the moment, AYY is constructing a new student hall in JÀtkÀsaari in Helsinki and preparing a new project in Otaniemi. In addition, many of the older accommodation sites have come up to the time for a complete renovation. The next ones to be renovated are JÀmerÀntaival 7, 5 and 3 in Otaniemi. The work is beginning with JÀmerÀntaival 7 C in January 2017.
