AYY is searching for a graphic designer to join its communications team

Join us in creating varied visual content for volunteer activities, events, advocacy matters and other services of the Student Union!

The tasks of a graphic designer include designing and editing material for AYY’s published content. In effect, these include various kinds of posters and the yearly review. On the web, the graphic designer also makes Facebook banners, webpage banners and part of our Facebook and Instagram posts. Smaller projects include business cards, staff cards, invitations and other small matters.

In 2018, AYY will receive a new visual look, based on BrandBook, helping to keep the new fresh look unified. You can still create visual outlooks and execute your creative vision in various kinds of event graphics, however. Your main work platform will be Adobe CS, and to ease the planning work we also have a Shutterstock account subscription set up for the graphic designer.

A requirement to apply is a professional knowledge of graphic design, editing and layout. Graphic skills and photography skills are considered a plus, along with knowledge of video editing and capture. The applicant should be able to control projects on their own and to be able to prioritize their work schedule accordingly. The applicant should have good communication skills in Finnish and English. Swedish is considered a plus.

Working in the Student Union requires enthusiasm, efficiency and from time to time flexibility in work hours. Knowledge of the Aalto community is a bonus, because it helps with the planning work of visual elements. You will work in a team with the AYY communications specialist and communications officer, who will help in work orientation and spar and bounce ideas back and forth with the graphic designer.

The work contract is permanent and part-time (20 hours/week). The paygrade is determined by the Student Union Work Agreement (Pay grade II, taking into note possible education and experience increases).  The person chosen for the job can apply for an AYY governed apartment. AYY’s central office is in Otaniemi, Espoo, with good public transport connections.

We will contact the possible endorsement contacts that the applicants have provided well in advance during the application process. Please add your endorsements into your CV or application.

Freely worded applications with CVs should be sent by Friday 20th of October 2017 by 12:00 to rekrytointi(at)ayy.fi. You will receive a confirmation of a received application. We aim to host interviews on Friday 3rd of November and Monday 6th of November. The chosen person will receive information of their selection as soon as possible after the interviews.

AYY is looking into forged tickets for the Aalto Afterparty 2017 event

AYY has been informed of cases where forged tickets or wristbands had been sold to the Aalto Afterparty 2017 event, held on the 8th of September 2017. The people at the door noticed the forgery when inspecting tickets. Due to security regulations, we unfortunately could not let the holders of these tickets inside.

AYY regrets the inconvenience caused by the situation. We also hope that the party or parties who sold the tickets will understand that their activity was reprehensible both legally and morally.

As a result, AYY has changed the practices related to selling and distributing tickets and wristbands. We also hope that people who buy tickets from others would be alert in the situation and buy their tickets directly from ticket sales or from a person they know and can identify if needed.

We are looking into the matter together with the Aalto University Security Services and the Western Uusimaa Police Department. If you know something about the issue or have purchased a forged ticket or one you suspect to be forged, please contact Producer Niina Palm (niina.palm@ayy.fi).

Design contest: Aalto University Provost’s Chain of Office

Organizer:

Aalto University Student Union (further AYY)

AYY invites all students to an open design contest: To design and create academic honors (a chain of office) for the provost of Aalto University (further Aalto). The contest is open to every student of Aalto; you can participate alone or in teams of two.

What is the provost’s chain of office?

The chain is an academic honor worn in academic and state affairs by the provost, such as the opening ceremony of the Aalto University, in the Conferment Ceremony and in parades.

Definition of the contest design

The aim of the contest is to design and create a modern chain of office for the provost of the Aalto University, that clearly depicts the values of Aalto: Passion, courage, freedom, responsibility, ethics, and student spirit. The idea is that the chain of office represents the Aalto spirit. The organizers hope that the contestants grasp the task in an open-minded and unprejudiced manner. Design choices that are interdisciplinary are considered a plus. The chain does not need to be traditional, but it needs to meet standards of dignity and elegance to be used in academic and state affairs, and can it be worn by male and female provosts alike. The design needs to be financially feasible. The design schematic must state an estimate of the costs of producing the design. AYY withholds the right to not implement any design submitted if it so chooses.

Participants

The contest is open to all students of Aalto University, including postgraduate students.

Judges

The panel of judges consists of six members; three students and three members of academic staff. The judges will be unveiled later. The Secretary General of AYY will act as the secretary for the panel.

Submitting contest designs

The designs are submitted electronically to the Secretary General of AYY, niko.ferm(at)ayy.fi by Monday 16th of October 2017 by 16:00. The design should remain secret, and it cannot be one that has been unveiled prior to the contest. The sent material must contain a visual design of the chain of office, a description of the concept, and a list of materials. The material sent must be provided in a manner which allows the panel of judges can evaluate the design in all matters that are essential to the contest.

Reward

The winner of the design contest will be paid a monetary reward of 1500 EUR. The panel of judges will also award acknowledgement awards. The costs of crafting the winning chain of office will be decided separately with the winning designer. Reclaiming the crafted chain, intellectual property rights and possible further designs are separately decided between the winning designer and AYY.

Judgment criterion for contest designs

The panel of judges will take special note on the artistic quality of the design, along with how well the values of Aalto, student spirit, Aalto spirit and interdisciplinary themes are visible in the design.

The designs are evaluated namelessly, which is why the description or the design schematic should not contain any names of the designers.

Contest timetable and proceedings

The contest is announced on the 19th of September 2017.

The design phase closes on the 16th of October 2017 at 16:00, by which the designs must be electronically submitted to niko.ferm(at)ayy.fi

The panel of judges will make its decision shortly after the submission deadline.

The chain of office must be ready by the 4th of December 2017.

For immediate release

Aalto University Student Union, AYY, is nominating Petteri Heliste as its candidate for the president of SYL, the National Union of University Students for 2018.

During the year he has concluded the process of extending curricula periods and participated in the recruitment of the new Provost. Earlier Heliste has been an active member of AYY Representative Council and volunteered for the student union and his subject society, the Guild of Physics.

”I want to see a SYL that keeps its members close and brings attention the worries and dreams of the younger generations. Free tuition, lifelong learning and sufficient support for students are key for enabling the young to build a professional and civilized society of the future. Student unions’ key role in educating students and enabling them to strive towards their ambitions through things like Dare to Learn and entrepreneurship must be kept in mind, too. ” says Petteri Heliste.

”Petteri has been a valuable colleague and his extensive knowledge and leaderships skills have been important for AYY’s advocacy sector this year. Petteri’s excellent lobbying and facilitation skills would be a great asset to SYL, too. ” declares Joona Orpana, AYY’s Chair of the Board.

”During the year Petteri has shown he’s capable of fostering a positive and constructive atmosphere even in difficult negotiations. His talent for understanding different perspectives and his capability for human-centered approach to challenges have been key to finding common ground.” states Eero Eloranta, Aalto University’s VP for Education.

SYL is electing the Board for 2018 in its assembly in Tampere on the 17th and 18th of November. SYL represents the university students of Finland at a national level and takes a stance on training policy, social policy and international issues.
