Year of Arts celebrates Aalto creativity

The Aalto University Student Union celebrates the Student Union’s Year of Arts in 2018. AYY Board member in charge of art, Julius Luukkanen, and Student Advocacy Specialist for ARTS students and Executive Manager for TOKYO Tero Uuttana tell us what you can expect in the future.

” The Year of Arts is both a theme and a project to the Student Union,” Luukkanen says.

” Through the theme of the Year of Arts, AYY wants to show the artistic side of the community and the different ways members have in expressing their creativity. The project itself is seen through AYY organizing various kinds of Year of Arts events throughout the year.”

The choice of theme comes from the move of the ARTS School of Art and Design to Otaniemi.

” We wish to give the ARTS students a warm welcome to Otaniemi and organize hopefully enjoyable activities with the entire community. We wish to make it seen that ARTS students are a strong part of the Aalto community,” Luukkanen said.

During the year there are a lot of events. The Year of Arts comes to a finale during the fall semester.

” The spearhead of the events coordinated by AYY will be the Otaniemen yö (Otaniemi Night) event upcoming in the fall. The event will be a cross-artistic city event, consisting of small events throughout the campus area. The main spotlight will be on the content created by our students,” Tero Uuttana says.

” Everyone is welcome. Students, staff, alumni; every resident of Espoo.”

The Year of Art events are already taking place. AYY is collaborating with the Ateneum art museum, so all AYY members can go and see the Ateneum exhibits for free on the 28th of March at the Taidetta meille (Art for us) event.

AYY also organizes the Wall Art for Väre contest in cooperation with the University, which searches for a piece of wall art for the 70-meter supporting wall rising next to the Väre building. Also, the design calendar by AYY and TOKYO for the year 2018-19 will be created based on the design that won the calendar contest at the start of the year.

There are also plans to continue building the AYY art collection, started up in 2017. The collection’s first pieces are up for viewing at the hallway leading to the U-wing of the Bachelor center building.

The word of the year is cross-artistic,” Julius Luukkanen sums up.” The aim is to bring art to suit various tastes into the spotlight in numerous ways. Every one of us is creative.”

” Art advances well-being,” Tero Uuttana adds.” It can help students to enjoy themselves and to cope with stress.”

#LuovutusAalto is here again – blood donation campaign between February 8th and April 6th 2018

Come and save lives!

Nearly a thousand voluntary blood donors are needed every weekday to make sure that about 50,000 seriously ill patients receive the treatment they need every year.

That is why the Aalto University Student Union is for the third time challenging all associations active within AYY to donate blood for the common good in the #LuovutusAalto campaign!

Autumn 2017 winners

In the autumn of 2017, #LuovutusAalto collected a total of 72 donations – more than twice the amount of donations collected during the first #LuovutusAalto campaign (34 donations). An impressive achievement!

The winner of the autumn 2017 campaign in percentage terms is Ristin Kilta, with more than ten percent of their members donating blood during the campaign. The quantitative winner was Inkubio, the guild for Bioinformation Technology students, with 18 donations. Inkubio also took the prize in the spring campaign! Both winners will receive a free sauna night at one of AYY’s sauna facilities and a diploma from the Finnish Red Cross.

Congratulations to Ristin Kilta and Inkubio, and a big thank you to everyone who donated blood during the previous campaign!

Spring 2018 campaign between February 8th and April 6th

The spring campaign will start at the Dipoli blood donation event on Thursday, February 8th. You can donate blood at Dipoli between 11:00 and 16:00. There will a Blood Service information desk in the main lobby during the event, where you can talk and ask about donating blood and the criteria for it.

The associations that have donated the most blood, both quantitatively and in percentage terms in relation to their number of members, are awarded the use of one of AYY’s sauna facilities for one night, a diploma from the Finnish Red Cross – and of course glory and adoration! The winners will be announced at AYY’s Anniversary Ball on May 19th.

All donors also receive an overall patch from the Finnish Red Cross.

One donation helps three patients. Read the instructions below and come and save lives!

How to participate in the campaign:

1. Register a VeriRyhmä group for your association (in Finnish). Name your group AYY + name of your association.

Did your association take part in the #LuovutusAalto campaign in 2017? Then you do not have to establish a new group. Check the list at the bottom of this page to find out if your association already has a group!

If you want to change the contact person of your existing group, please send an e-mail to sanomatalo@veripalvelu.fi.

2. Let AYY know that you are taking part in the campaign by filling out this form.

Remember to mention the name of your VeriRyhmä group to the staff at the Blood Service Centre!

Take your official ID with photo and Finnish identity number with you! You should reserve approximately an hour for the donation.

4. All donations made between February 8th and April 6th count towards the campaign’s donations, as long as you remember to tell the name of your VeriRyhmä group at the Blood Service Centre. This means that you can donate blood at a Blood Service Centre or blood donation event anywhere in Finland.

5. Feeling nervous? Not to worry! The Blood Service website has detailed instructions about how to act when donating blood and what really happens there.

Let’s save lives together with all of AYY – #LuovutusAalto!

#LuovutusAalto vol. 2!

Every day, Finnish volunteers save lives – be one of them!

Nearly a thousand voluntary blood donors are needed every weekday to make sure that about 50,000 seriously ill patients receive the treatment they need every year. That is why the Aalto University Student Union is once again challenging all associations active within AYY to donate blood for the common good!

In the spring, #LuovutusAalto collected a total of 34 donations, meaning that we helped over 100 patients. The competition was won by a landslide by the bioinformation technology guild Inkubio with 23 donations. Inkubio was rewarded at the AYY Annual Ball with thunderous applause, and they received glory and adoration, a diploma from the Finnish Red Cross, and a free sauna night at one of AYY’s sauna facilities. Inkubio’s diploma can be found on Instagram!

The autumn LuovutusAalto challenge starts on the 2nd of October, and you can donate until the 30th of November. Like in the spring, the associations that have donated the most blood, both quantitatively and in percentage terms in relation to their number of members, are awarded the use of one of AYY’s sauna facilities for one night, a diploma from the Finnish Red Cross – and of course glory and adoration! All donors also receive an overall patch from the Finnish Red Cross. In addition, groups that have donated at least 10 times during the year will receive a diploma and their names will be put up on the Blood Service website.

The campaign is part of the Suomi Finland 100 campaign, where the Blood Service challenges donor groups to donate 10 000 bags of blood in 2017! For more information on the campaign, visit the Blood Service campaign website.

How to participate in the campaign:

  1. Register a VeriRyhmä group for your association at veripalvelu.fi/ryhmat. Name your group “AYY + name of your association”.
  • If your association took part in the previous campaign, you do not have to establish a new group.

  1. Let AYY know that you are taking part in the campaign by filling out the form.
  • Once again, if your association took part in the previous campaign, you do not have to establish a new group.

  1. Donate blood as a group or individually at a Blood Service Centre and remember to mention the name of your VeriRyhmä group to the staff at the Blood Service Centre during registration! Also remember to take your official ID with you!
  • AYY will also organize blood donation points in Otaniemi in the autumn, and hopefully on other campuses as well.
  • In the spring, some of the donors mentioned only the fact that they were taking part in the LuovutusAalto campaign, forgetting to mention the name of their association. This led to the disqualification of a few “votes”. Sadness.
  • If you want to donate blood with a larger group, call the Blood Service Centre to arrange a donation time in advance. A good size for a group is 4 –6 persons, and you should reserve at least an hour for the donation.
  • You should test whether you are suitable as a donor at www.sovinkoluovuttajaksi.fi. You can also call the free info phone for blood donors if you have any health-related questions, tel. 0800 0 5801 (weekdays 8–17).

  1. Sign up for AYY’s Facebook event! Social media hashtags: #LuovutusAalto and #VeriRyhmä! Challenge your friends!

Application open for the SYL union meeting delegation and position as AYY’s candidate for SYL’s board

SYL, the National Union of University Students in Finland, is the association of the Finnish student unions, which represents the Finnish university students in national decision making. The annually appointed board implements the action plan and the policy paper which guide the advocacy work of SYL. The policy paper and the action plan will be approved in the union meeting where the board is also elected. The union meeting of the year 2017 will be held in Tampere on 17th – 18th November 2017. SYL’s union meeting is an excellent vantage point to the Finnish student movement as well as university students’ national interest representation and its impact on students’ everyday life.

In the union meeting, AYY is represented by a delegation which consists of 14 union meeting representatives who use the student union’s voting right in the union meeting, and their deputies. The board will appoint the delegation to SYL’s union meeting after consulting the Representative Council groups. An open electronic application will be organised for the delegation.

The application is open until Sept 10th 2017 11.59pm.

You can apply here.

At its meeting 7/2012, the Representative Council approved a regulation on acting in a union meeting. The regulation is available here.

All delegation members are expected to take part in meetings preceding the union meeting. The meeting calendar will be updated on this page soon.
