5. Otaniemi junk bike collection

The Otaniemi junk bike collection is here and it’s bigger than ever. This year, we’ll be collecting abandoned bikes in the Otaniemi area not only from properties owned by AYY and Hoas, but also from ACRE’s buildings.

All bikes will be marked with a colorful bracelet between the 6th and 8th of April. All bikes that still have the bracelet intact will be collected during May. So remember to remove the bracelet from your bike as soon as possible! Please also tell your friends and roommates who aren’t in Otaniemi during the collection period to make sure the bracelet is removed from their bicycle. Is your friend on an exchange? Help them out!

All collected bikes that are in good condition will be sold in September. Then is your chance to buy yourself a working bicycle at an affordable price.

AYY is distributing exchange, community and study scholarships this spring to support the internationalization of students and community activities and to encourage the successful combination of studies and the student life.

7. The Nice Roomie Contest

Roommate done something nice for you? Let us know!

Has your roomie nursed you with zinc and vitamin C when you’ve been struck down by the flu? Helped you move, baked you cookies for your b-day? Organized a movie night at the shared apartment, unclogged the sink, evicted a stray moth from your room? Something else? Let us know!

A nice roommate act can be anything at all, as long as it has brought joy to one’s roommates. If you were the one carrying out the act, you can also inform us of it yourself. Do it here: https://lomake.ayy.fi/kampusjaosto/kiva-kamppisteko-kilpailu/

The rewards for nice roommate acts will be handed out at the Wappurieha declaration on the 30th of April. That means there is still ample time to carry out nice acts for your roommates.

The deadline for contest submissions closes on Wednesday, the 18th of April 2018. All AYY and Hoas Otaniemi apartments are involved in the contest, so whether your flat is a friend, family or shared flat, it is time to do something nice for your roommates!

The Ministry of Education and Culture invites students to participate in an online think tank for the Vision for Higher Education and Research in 2030.

According to the “Proposal to Finland: Finland 100+”, found in the Higher Education and Research 2030 Vision, published in October 2017, Finland’s strategy for success is to be the most skillful nation in the world. The aim is that at least half of young adults will complete a higher education degree.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has launched the vision’s implementation and the preparation work for its roadmap together with the staff, students and stakeholders of higher education institutions. The online think tank, which is now open, allows everyone to work together and share their ideas on methods and incentives on how to reach the vision’s goals.

Participate in the online think tank by the 8th of April 2018 by visiting this link: www.fountainpark.fi/visio2030

WELL-BEING

13. Results of the Spring 2018 AllWell? survey

The AllWell? student well-being survey was sent in February 2018 to the first-year master’s and second year bachelor students of Aalto. The percentage of answers was 39, which is significantly higher than last year (29%). The increase in information and openness in the Aalto community can be seen as one of the achievements of the spring.

The results were very similar to the 2017 survey. The number of students running the risk of exhaustion, a fact that caused worry last year, has stayed the same (a bit less than 20%). The results still show that Aalto students aim to thoroughly understand what they learn. The interestingness of teaching and confidence in yourself and excelling are in key roles in learning.

What next?

The results will be sent to the school Vice-deans in charge of studies, and the AllWell? team will present the individual results by school at the Aalto schools. The results will be investigated in collaboration with AYY and student organizations, also on program and major levels where the answer percentage was high enough. The aim is to recognize strengths in programs and development targets, and to find means and ways to improve study well-being.

The courses for students and the web material on study well-being are being further developed during the spring.

Questions and comments can be sent to allwell@aalto.fi

14. The pollen season is coming, prepare yourself in time!

The pollen season is about to begin. Remember to renew your prescription in time before the pollen season starts.

If you have any questions about hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and its treatments, please contact FSHS. www.yths.fi/en

The events are gentle and empowering. They consist of writing, discussions and silence.

You can participate in one or both of the events according to your schedule and interest. Participation is free, tea is served starting from 14:30. Every afternoon has room for max. 15 participants. The afternoons are held in Finnish.

Organizer: MA, author and trainer Mertzi Bergman.

20. New Into released

An upgrade of the Aalto student portal, Into (https://into.aalto.fi/), has just been released.

Into was redesigned during last autumn and this spring on the basis of student feedback and the results of the student service design project. The redesign has been a joint effort by Aalto student representatives, IT services and student services.

What has changed on Into?
– Into has a new look and feel.
– Into contents are now arranged according to degree programme, not school (the school websites are being withdrawn from the Into site).
– The contents have been pared down and clarified.
– A mobile version of Into is being released.

The contents of Into will be expanded during the spring and we will be collecting feedback for Into’s future development.

You can still access the old Into during the spring. The archived version of Into is available at https://into-archive.aalto.fi/

You can send your feedback on the Into portal to into@aalto.fi

CULTURE

18. Teekkarispeksi 2018: Hurma

It is summer 1914 at the Belfort Lyceum in France. Anna is preparing for the end-of-year ball with her classmates. Balls are always an important event, but now the Lyceum must also convince an inspector sent by the state, who is looking for even the slightest excuse to close down the school that is deemed as old-fashioned.

Anna, too, must do her part to make the evening perfect. Her thoughts are far off, however, as she receives a surprising letter from a secret admirer. Soon Anna makes a crucial mistake, one thing leads to another, and the result is truly not what anyone expected.

Speksi is a full-blooded, all-night musical, where actors, dancers, the orchestra and the diverse off-stage team create an entertaining, sincere and technically high-quality performance on the stage.

The thing that sets a speksi apart from normal plays and musicals is the audience and their participation. When a member of the audience yells “omstart”, the actor must improvise the scene again, tell a joke related to the situation or even start singing out of the blue, and then go back to the plot and the script. The orchestra, dancers and technology also participate in the improvisation. Omstarts are not practiced – they are created in the moment. Each show is different.

If you don’t believe it, come and see and try it yourself!

More information about the spring speksi can be found here: http://teekkarispeksi.fi/

20. Outo kantele record release concert on the 23rd of March

Outo kantele, the ninth record by KYN, conducted by Kaija Viitasalo, is an homage to the music of Jukka Linkola. The record comprises of two suites composed for KYN by Linkola: Loitsut (Incantations) and Outo kantele.

The music in Loitsut is full of joy, playful expression resembling the life itself, as well as simple beauty. Loitsut is a celebration of people and the nature, everyday wonders, happenings, work and of course love. The suite is colored with a vibraphone played by Panu Savolainen.

Outo kantele has fascinated audiences from France to Taiwan and charmed even a competition jury. In Outo kantele, Linkola has fused the world of folk poetry with a dose of bold cabaret spirit, a vibrant, even a bit theatrical expression, and a pinch of jazzy groove. The suite is starred by accordionist Johanna Juhola and pianist Kirmo Lintinen.

Warmly welcome!

26. New Into portal to be released on Monday, 12 March

The release date of the new Into has been postponed to Monday, 12 March.

Into (into.aalto.fi), the Aalto official student portal, has been undergoing a redesign process since last autumn based on student feedback and the results of the student service design project.

The biggest changes compared to the old version:

– Into’s visual appearance will all change
– information is organised by programme, not school
– the content has been pared down and clarified
– a mobile version of Into is being released

The expansion of content will continue during the spring. We will collect feedback from students to improve Into further.

The old Into contents will continue to be available alongside the new Into until the end of the spring term.
