7. Barventures on 5 Sept 2018

Aalto Cocktail, Kyllä Oluelle and Wine Club Baccus are organising the fourth Barventures in history, bringing cocktails, wines and beers under the same roof! The time between the Aalto party and the Aalto afterparty has always been wasted (no pun intended), but do not worry – Barventures is here to fill in that feeling of emptiness between the events! The evening’s music will be sorted by Kyllä Oluelle’s own boy, DJ Jon Flow!

Last year’s event was sold out in advance, so book your tickets early to make sure you won’t be the only one left in the cold!

8. Film club Montaasi’s movie nights in September

Welcome to the movie nights of the film club Montaasi! Movie nights are organised every Sunday, usually from 5.30 pm onwards, in the Kinopoli theatre in Otaniemi or in Montaasi’s club room next to Kinopoli, and they’re open to everyone regardless of club membership.

The September evenings will be spent watching Thom Andersen’s essay document on Los Angeles’ film presentations, Los Angeles Plays Itself (2004) (please note, starts already at 5 pm), John Carpenter’s modern masterpiece of atmospheric horror, The Thing (1982), Vincent Gallo’s nineties indie flick Buffalo ’66 (1998) and John Huston’s great heist classic, The Asphalt Jungle (1950). On 23 Sept, there will be a short break from movie nights because of the Love & Anarchy film festival. Specifics on the screenings can be found at https://montaasi.ayy.fi/ajankohtaista/ (in Finnish).

More information on Montaasi at https://montaasi.ayy.fi/ and https://www.facebook.com/montaasi/ (both in Finnish).

Wed 12 Sept at 10 am–4 pm, at the Undergraduate Centre on the Otaniemi campus (Otakaari 1, Espoo)

Beginning your studies and moving into your own home is exciting, wonderful and the best thing ever – but it’s also pretty expensive. For example, kitchen supplies or groceries can be a surprisingly big expense. But don’t worry, the Martha organisation is coming to help you!

The event focuses on sustainable living, and you can come to pick up some of the kitchen supplies you need, for example – and it’s all for free! Our free market has recycled, usable tableware, cooking equipment and other kitchen supplies. There is also a stand where you can get your hands on a nifty overall badge with the crafts Marthas’ help. In addition, the event offers you:

  • – advice and tips for sustainable living
  • – tasters and ideas for cooking
  • – hints and insights for laying the table

The game was originally created for campuses like Otaniemi, so we’ll get to play this game in the best location in Finland!

The workshop meets four times on Mondays at 2–4 pm, on 24 Sept– 15 Oct 2018. The workshop is Finnish-language. More information at https://into.aalto.fi/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=328008 (in Finnish)

AYY’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Applications for the renovated Jämeräntaival 5 B apartments open from the 12th to the 15th of June

In June, a total of 34 apartments will be completed at Jämeräntaival 5 B, 30 of which are shared studio apartments. People can move in to the apartments starting from the 2nd of July.

The AYY Board has decided that all AYY’s members are given equal opportunity to apply for the Jämeräntaival 5 B apartments. Lots will be drawn to determine who gets an apartment.

The application process for the apartments differs somewhat from the usual:

– You can apply for the apartments between the 12th and 15th of June 2018.
– The place in the queue for all applications submitted within the deadline will be drawn by lot.
– The lots will be drawn within different score groups.
– After the 15th of June 2018, the applications will continue according to the normal queuing process.

A shared studio apartment is a cross between a shared apartment and a studio. Each tenant has a personal room with their own toilet/bathroom and a kitchenette, equipped with a fridge, freezer, oven and stove. Keeping the communal spaces clean and tidy is the responsibility of the tenants.

3. Retrieve your bike collected during the Junk Bike Collection before the end of the summer

All bikes in Otaniemi were marked with colorful bracelets in April. Bikes that still had the bracelet intact were collected at the end of May. If your bike was collected and you want it back, you have time until the start of September to retrieve it from storage against sufficient proof, such as a key that fits the lock of the bike.

Bike retrieval will be possible about once in every two weeks during the summer, and the exact dates will be announced on the Junk Bike Collection website and Facebook event. Please let us know that you’re coming at the latest on the previous day by filling out this form: https://lomake.ayy.fi/kampusjaosto/otaniemen-romupyorakerays/

All collected bikes that are in good condition will be sold in September. Then is your chance to buy yourself a working bicycle at an affordable price!

A Student Center seminar was held in April 2018, , johon osallistui edustajia erityisasemayhdistysten puheenjohtajien neuvostosta, edustajistosta ja AYY:n jaostoista. The goal of the seminar was to brainstorm what kinds of facilities, functions and services the center could have.

The ideas gathered onto the opiskelijakeskus.fi website are results of the seminar. Anyone can browse the ideas, like them and add their own ideas. We will go through the most popular ideas on Friday, the 15th of June, with further planning in mind. So, visit the website and add your own top ideas. What would you want the Student center to have?

9. A shifting piece of art to be built next to Väre

Artist Gloria Lauterbach’s piece “Kreuzstrasse” has won the Väre Wall Art competition, which sought for ideas for a piece of art on the 70-meter wall standing beside the new buildings, Väre and the Business school. The contest was open for every student of Aalto University and garnered a total of 26 contestants.

The winning design won the jury with its strength. Lauterbach is a postgrad student at the School of Arts and Design.

“The copper roof, green with patina of the ages and the birch growing from within depict slow change”, Lauterbach opens her plan. There is a wish for a participatory part in the piece, which the artist will design later together with the Aalto University Student Union.

The jury also decided to award the second-place piece and give an honorary mention. The second place was “Piiri” by information technology student Emil Fihlman and Arts postgrad Mollu Heino. The honorary mention was awarded to “Aalto Shape Shifters” by Arts student Anna Björklund.
