2. Next stop AYY – ongoing application for volunteer positions

Operate in the Student Union’s delegation, committee or body? AYY provides versatile duties for those who are interested in the community, culture, internationality, student advocacy, sports, culture of engineering students, communications or corporate relations.

The sections form the core of volunteer work in the Student Union, acting directly as part of the various sectors. With their hard work, delegation members participate in the most visible activities in AYY, which is rewarded with memorable experiences, new skills and friends. The sections include Aava, Aura, Aalto-Liike, Kopojory, Group X, International Section and TJ. Find out what is behind the mystery names and find your own group!

Committees are an easy and fun way to participate in the student union activities and gain experience from more specific fields. Committee activities include various events, happenings arranged for new students and development cooperation.

The application for the chairperson position in the sections will end on 2 Dec and the deadline for the majority of other positions is 7 Dec.

3. Application for student representative positions open until 30 Nov

AYY is also looking for members to the Management Group for Academic Affairs. We are looking for committed volunteers to coordinate student representatives within their respective Schools and to keep the AYY Board informed about the issues in the Schools.

4. Discount for Aalto University members in Iittala stores

Dear Aalto members, Iittala offers all Aalto University students a 10 % discount on all normal-priced products in all Iittala outlets and stores in the metropolitan area. You can receive the discount by presenting a valid student card. The discount is valid until 31 Aug 2012. The discount does not apply to ordered products such as Arabia’s Fujin kukat and Memories, numbered products, Myiittala Aalto Vase, Art Works, Claritas and Vodou collections.

5. Opportunity to get to know Tsinghua University students

AYY provides an opportunity to get to know the Chinese culture and people. AYY and our friendship student union from Tsinghua University (Peking) want Aalto and Tsinghua students to get to know one another through several projects in the coming years.

The first aim is very simple. If you want to get to know students from the best university in China, please send your email address to international(at)ayy.fi including your name, age, major subject (degree programme). Please also mention possible other communication tools that you use (such as skype) and describe with a few sentences what you would like to learn from your future Chinese friend (in English). The deadline for registration is Wednesday, 30 Nov!

In early December, we introduce the students to one another and share their contact information. After this, everything is up to you. You can get to know your new friend through email, call each other on skype on a weekly basis or you might get so close that you will be on your way to Peking in January.

6. Apply for AIESEC internship in Canada

Are you interested in working abroad? Do you have educational background and/or working experience in programming? AIESEC Aalto is offering internships opportunities in Canada for Aalto students.

Era Environmental Consulting in Montreal requires programmers with knowledge of SQL, Javascript, Visual Basic, C/C++, .Net, ASP. Duration: 6-8 months. Salary $2,000/month.

CATI Training Systems in Montreal requires a programmer with the knowledge of C/C++, Active X, Open GC, Visual studio. Duration 12 months. Salary $2,500-$3,000/month.

7. Movie tickets for test subjects

Department of Media Technology is looking for test subjects for two tests. The requirement for participation is fluent Finnish skills. Each test takes approximately one hour. You can participate in both tests if you want to.

8. Apply for NordicMUN

In Kiljavanranta, Nurmijärvi, the NordicMUN meeting will be arranged on 23-26 Apr. The theme of the meeting is the climate change and the meeting language is English. A general meeting and a safety council simulation will be arranged in the event.

Electronic registration to the meeting is ongoing and will end on 10 Dec 2011.

9. Welcome to Helsinki Refugee Film Festival

Refugee Advice Centre will arrange the first refugee film festival in Finland, Helsinki Refugee Film Festival, on 25–26 Nov in the auditorium of the Finnish Film Foundation, Kanavakatu 12.

In addition to the films, the festival programme includes work shops and discussions. The purpose of the event is to provide more information on issues related to displacement, migration, human trafficking and political persecution.

The seven festival screenings consist of 13 great and thought-provoking films. These include both films that are rewarded internationally and debut films made by students, films seen for the first time in Finland and films that are slightly older but still have current themes. The event includes documents, long and short films from Finland, the Nordic Countries and other European countries as well as films from Kongo, Brazil and New Zealand, for example. There is a free admission to all festival events. Welcome!

3. Opportunity to get to know Tsinghua University students!

AYY provides an opportunity to get to know the Chinese culture and people. AYY and our friendship student union from Tsinghua University (Peking) want Aalto and Tsinghua students to get to know one another by organising several events in the coming years.

4. KY is looking for the club secretary for the period 13 Feb 2012– 31 Aug 2013

The Association of Economics Students in Helsinki (KY) is the advocacy and service organisation for approximately 3,300 students of Aalto University School of Economics that also supports the recreational activities of its members. KY actively fosters the traditions and culture of Economics students as part of the Aalto University community. We are now looking for a full-time club secretary to join our team for the period 13 Feb 2012–31 Aug 2013 or as agreed.

The job description of KY’s club secretary provides versatile challenges and an enthusiastic and motivating work environment. The position is full-time with 37.5 working hours per week, in the summer between 1 June–31 July there are 30 working hours per week. The position is covered by KY’s employee regulations. The monthly salary is 1,700 euro and in the summer 1,360 euro. The term may be continued after the period for an additional year if both parties so desire.

9. Wearing the Responsibility – Seminar of corporate social responsibility in textile production

Time: 1 December, 2pm–5pm

Did you know that 70% of the lakes and the rivers in China are classified as polluted due to textile and garment production? In 2008, 260 million jeans were produced in China and distributed to the US, Europe and Japan. Additionally, most workers in China are paid a very low price-rate wage that makes it impossible for them to earn a living wage without working overtime hours.

2. Apply for HOAS delegation

According to the rules of the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region (HOAS), AYY has the right to appoint its own representatives to certain organs. AYY has the right to appoint nine (9) members to HOAS delegation for two calendar years at a time. Based on the fixed term regulation in the foundation rules, AYY’s Board will appoint four (4) members to the delegation for the period 2012-2013 this year.

The duties of the Hoas delegation include confirming the foundation’s financial statement, budget and the plan of action, among other things. The actual meetings of the delegation are the spring meeting held in May and the autumn meeting held in November.

If you are interested in representing AYY in the delegation, please apply for the position by filling out the application form at http://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/HOAS/ . The application must be filled out by 4pm on 8 Nov 2011.

3. Book an appointment for influenza vaccination

FSHS offers free seasonal flu vaccinations for students in the risk group. Book your appointment for vaccination. Contact information and phone numbers are available at FSHS website at www.yths.fi/toimipisteet.

4. Light application round of TTE-Fund to open on 1 Nov

Do you have an idea but no funding? A continuous, lighter application process will SOON be open!

TTE-Fund (fund for promoting teekkari activities) allocates grants to all AYY members and communities operating within the Student Union. TTE-Fund supports activities which reach for the stars, make others excited and which can be seen and heard.

In November, the lighter application round of TTE-Fund will permanently open. You can apply for the maximum of 300 euro grant with a brief project description. The lighter application process is intended for small projects implemented with a tight schedule. The applicant can alternatively get either the amount one applied for or no funding at all, so you should carefully consider the amount you will apply for! The grant is paid afterwards against a brief final report and the financial statement of the project.

Applications for the lighter application round can be send from 1 Nov 2011 onwards until the end of May. If the lighter application round is popular, it will continue next autumn.

Instructions for the lighter application round:

1. Write a brief (maximum A4) free-form application about the project. The application must include at least a brief project description and an estimated budget.
2. Send the application to tter@list.ayy.fi. The application must include the applicant’s contact details and the account number to which the grant is paid.
3. Grant decisions are announced to the applicants each month.
4. The allocated grant will be paid against a brief final report including a photo and a financial statement of the project. These should be sent to the address tter@list.ayy.fi.

5. University students’ own sports centre – UniSport at Otahalli

UniSport, university students’ sports centre at Otahalli began its operations on 1 Sept! There are gym facilities of 800 m2 on three floors, 55 hours of group exercise (Zumba, BODYPUMP®, spinning, etc.) per week and ball game facilities (floorball, futsal, basketball and volleyball), etc. All this costs only €89 for university students!

7. Renovation causes noise and changes to pedestrian traffic

The excavation work of the renovation at Otakaari 1 began on 27 Oct 2011. The work begins with rock drilling in the yard between the wings A and M and will continue between the wings Y and M on the north side of the building on week 44 (31 Oct-4 Nov). Drilling will cause significant and constant noise. The estimated duration of the work is one month. NCC Rakennus apologises for the inconvenience.

A pedestrian pavement will be constructed next to the work site on the Otakaari side. Pedestrian traffic is directed to the front of the work site gate. Some of the heavy traffic of the construction site will drive through the gate, so please pay attention when passing the gate.

8. TalentIT Career Fair on 3 November in Dipoli

TalentIT is the largest ICT-focused career fair in Finland. On 3 November, students can meet employers and learn more about job opportunities in the field of information and communication technology.

The theme of TalentIT 2011 is Balanced Career, which is why employers have been asked to focus on presenting their role in employee well-being and to emphasise the importance of the working life balance. With this theme, we want to encourage students to think and ask questions about their own well-being in the working life.

This year, we have 60 interesting exhibitors from start-ups to well-known international companies. In addition, some companies will advertise their current job openings with “Open position!” info flashes in Klondyke hall during the fair day.

9. BEST Training Day 9.11.

When: 9 Nov 2011, 4pm

Where: Microsoft Finland, Keilaranta 7, 02150 Espoo

What: BEST Helsinki organises the second training day of this semester for Aalto students and this time we are heading to the awesome (you’ll see ;)) Microsoft office at Keilaranta to hear about the cool new things they have been working on!

After the training, there will be more interesting discussions over a delicious dinner and in the sauna!

10. Bringing out the voice of the young

The Social Guarantee for young people ensures a work, training, workshop or rehabilitation place for everyone under 25 years of age and all recently graduated under 30 years of age within three months after becoming unemployed. The target is challenging but together we can achieve it!

11. Sacred Belongs to Everyone – art contest for students

Sacred Belongs to Everyone art contest, which is intended for students, will begin on 1 November. The aim of the competition is to provide a concrete opportunity for the young adults to reflect on their relationship with the sacred through art. Through the contest, we also receive information about what the young adults consider sacred. The contest is implemented in cooperation with educational institutions.

The contest is open to students in universities, the universities of applied sciences, vocational schools and colleges in the metropolitan area, regardless of their level of artistic expertise or the field of study. The theme can be processed from any perspective without limitations. There are three competition categories: visual expression, word art, and multimedia or a collage.

In each category, the first prize of 700 euro and the prize of 200 euro are awarded. In addition, the pre-jury consisting of students will select one work from all entries, which is rewarded with 200 euro. You can participate in the contest between 1 Nov 2011 and 31 Jan 2012. The winning works will be presented in Sacred Belongs to Everyone exhibition in the exhibition hall at Lasipalatsi, Helsinki, on 26 Apr–8 May 2012.

The contest is arranged by the educational institution work of the Evangelical Lutheran parishes in the metropolitan area.

3. Don’t guess – watch the Election Battle and vote!

AYY’s Representative Council elections are here! Who will decide on what your membership fees are spent and what are the views of your Student Union? The most interesting battle of the autumn will take place in the Election Battle which gathers together in the same studio the representatives of electoral coalitions for a fierce war of words on 25 Oct, 7pm-9pm. Presenters are Aino Magazine Journalist Johanna Mitjonen and Aate Media Journalist Maria Viitanen.

Who is beautiful? Watch! Aate offers the exciting battle to your home couch as a live broadcast in prime time. Who is bold? Participate! Send your own tough questions or comments. Surf to aatemedia.fi.

In AYY’s Representative Council elections, you can vote electronically on 24 Oct-1 Nov (ayy.fi/vaalit) and in ballot elections on 2 Nov.

4. What will housing in AYY look like in 2016? Now you have a chance to participate in shaping that future in the housing vision group!

AYY is putting effort in improving student housing and housing services in the near future. The goal of AYY is to become the best student housing provider in Finland by 2016. In the housing vision group, you will take part in mapping the general state of the housing services now, generating new ideas about the services that are needed and prioritising the implementation of improvements. The purpose of the housing vision group is to offer an opportunity for students, tenants and others who are interested in AYY’s housing affairs to participate in the review of the housing services.

The housing vision group will be composed of the maximum of 8-10 members. The members are chosen from among the applicants by considering the group’s general diversity and representativeness. The group will begin its work in November and meet approximately once a week. The aim of the group is to provide a general and comprehensive report about the desired improvements in the housing services by the end of December 2011.

6. Well-being week at Aalto 31 Oct–3 Nov

In November, Aalto celebrates the well-being week. During the week, Aalto’s health and well-being associations are presented and we remind everyone about the importance of exercise, healthy nutrition and rest!

7. Borrow sports equipment from AYY’s Otaniemi Service Point

AYY lends sports equipment to its members from Otakaari 11 Service Point in Otaniemi. Equipment can be borrowed during the opening hours. The service point offers soccer balls, volleyballs, floorball sticks, badminton rackets and board games. When you borrow something, please write down your contact details and the borrowed equipment in the notebook in the closet and return the equipment IMMEDIATELY after use. The service will be discontinued if the equipment are not returned to the equipment closet.

8. CAREER WORKSHOP How to use various job search channels efficiently (CHEM, ENG, ELEC, SCI, +)

Wed, 26 Oct 2011, 2.15pm-4pm, Otakaari 7 B, 3rd floor, seminar hall 331.

In the event, we will go through the most efficient job-search channels: public and silent search, direct contacts to interesting companies and networks. Please bring one job advertisement with you: either a job that you could apply for or an otherwise interesting position.

The training consists of info flashes and work in small discussion groups.

The training will be arranged on Wednesday, 26 Oct, 2.15pm-4pm at Otakaari 7, 3rd floor, seminar hall 331. The training is led by Career Psychologist Seija Leppänen from Aalto University’s Career Services.

Twenty Aalto University degree students can participate in the registration order.

9. Scholarships for students and teachers in the field of technology

Five scholarships granted from the profit of the School of Electrical Engineering Fund can be applied for until 31 Oct. Scholarships from Student Fund and Julius Tallberg Fund are granted for Aalto students of technology. Scholarships from Ernst Wirtzen Fund and Kansallis-Osake-Pankki Fund and Strömberg Fund are granted for Aalto teachers. Application instructions are available at Into scholarship site.

The scholarship application period is extended due to the lack of applications.

10. Special Project of management has started again!

The student-led course Special Project aimed at the students of management at the School of Economics has started for the academic year 2012. The course will be implemented as a study trip and this year’s destination is Kuala Lumpur, where the group of 15 students will travel next March. 11. Come dine with me

Come dine with me? Hmm, with whom…? You don’t know and that’s the spirit of this game! The only thing you do know in advance is that you will have an intriguing evening built around a surprise menu served by and accompanied with other Aalto students.

Reveal your hidden chef and apply as a host or explore your tastes by applying as a guest. Either way, Art Goes Aalto will make the matchmaking for you. We serve you new friends for first course, culinary experiences for main course and a joyful evening for dessert.

Register as a host or as a guest at the very latest on 31 October. The participation fee for guest is 5 euro. Hosts will get 20 euro from AYY plus 5 euro from each guest for dinner preparations. As a host, you don’t have to pay anything!
