4. Wanted: the international deed of the year 2012!

The time has come to reward the international deed of the year. Has a professor of yours, a student association or someone else done something special to make Aalto more international? Does someone you know deserve recognition for a brilliant idea or for a great effort to help international students? If yes, propose their deed for the International Deed of the Year-award!

The price can be awarded to any person, group or organization within Aalto who has made Aalto more international or a better place for international students or Finnish students looking for international experiences. The deed should have taken place in 2012 or in late 2011.

Please send your proposal to international@ayy.fi by 25 October 2012. Please include a justification why this deed should be selected to win the award.

The prize will be awarded during the international week (12-18 November).

5. Looking into next year and more comfortable living in Teekkari Village!

Would you like to make Teekkari Village an even better place to live? Now you have the opportunity: run as a candidate in the village elections and get your friends to participate as well! This year, nine resident members of the Village Senate are elected through a direct personal election, but you can naturally implement the advertisement campaign together. You can run as a candidate at Otaniemi Service Point from Mon, 22 Oct, onwards. The candidate form, the election declaration and other instructions are available at http://kylavaalit.ayy.fi.

Advance voting will begin on Mon, 12 Oct, and the election day is Thu, 22 Nov, when the Christmas party of the village will be celebrated at Smökki.

The Village Senate is the resident committee of Teekkari Village, which purpose is to improve the comfort of living. The most visible events of the year are May Day declaration from the roof of Smökki, Flower Day message to the eastern harbour city and the organising of the Christmas party of the village in connection with the elections. In the previous years, the Village Senate has also organised the collection of junk cars and deserted bikes. In 2012, the 60-year-old Village was celebrated with sitsit, children’s Saturday and the Flower party. The Village Senate also organised a clothing donation box of UFF next to OK20 in Otaniemi.

By the way, the position of the Village Chief, the chairperson of the Village Senate of 2013, will be filled through AYY’s volunteer recruitment, so those who are interested should keep their eyes and ears open later in the autumn!

7. Pests in the metropolitan area: guidelines for AYY’s residents

Recently, there have been news about pests being a problem in student housing. Finland has not had pests for a very long time but now the problem has come back here. Pests are a persistent problem, and their destruction requires fast action from the resident and the landlord.

Currently, the most common pests in student housing are bedbugs and beetles. Both have been found in AYYs apartments. The best way to avoid pests is to take good care of the cleanliness and hygiene of your apartment. If you detect anything referring to pests in your apartment, please contact AYY’s housing office immediately. The housing office will immediately order professionals to check the apartment and do the necessary fumigation. The resident does not have to pay for these expenses.

Unfortunately, AYY cannot pay other compensation or provide rent reductions due to pest animals. Therefore, it is in everyone’s interest to keep the apartment in such a good condition that pests do not nest there. If the situation is prolonged, the worst case scenario with bed bugs is that you have to destroy entire pieces of furniture and AYY cannot compensate for them either. The faster AYY receives information on pests, the easier and quicker it is to destroy them and the less likely the problem will spread in other apartments and cause more expenses to anyone.

Because of this, also be very careful if you are going to take an abandoned piece of furniture in your home! Check the furniture very carefully and play it safe rather than carry pests to your home with an old arm-chair.

If pests are found in the apartment, AYY cannot offer a new apartment to the residents before the pest situation is fixed. Otherwise pests could spread in the new apartment with the transferred resident, and the problem would start all over again.

If AYY is not informed about pests or the problem gets worse or spreads in other apartments because of the tenant’s actions, the tenant may be charged the expenses of the pest control. This may happen if the apartment is considered particularly filthy and suitable for pests, or if AYY is not informed about pests and pests are carried to a new AYY apartment.

Information on bedbugs.

Information on beetles.

Questions and comments may be presented to Housing Specialist Jaakko Koivula (050 520 9444, etunimi.sukunimi@ayy.fi).

The Fund for Promoting Teekkari Activities (TTE-Fund) operates within Aalto University Student Union. The purpose of the fund is to grant scholarships in order to promote the aspirations of AYY and its members and associations, awake and maintain interest in technical, scientific, economic and social issues, as well as cultural activities.

The board of the fund consists of four members appointed by AYY and three members appointed by the Guild of the Round Tower. The board members are elected for two years at a time and the chair is elected from among the persons appointed to the board by AYY. The board is appointed by the Representative Council of the Student Union. The board is responsible for the granting of scholarships based on applications, while managing the fund’s assets is the duty of AYY Board. The board offers its members a unique vantage point to student activities, as the fund’s opportunity to allocate grants is very significant on AYY’s scale.

Based on the resignation section, two positions in the board of the fund will become vacant at the end of the year, and we are looking for smart and versatile persons to fill these positions. Please fill out the application form by 4pm on 23 Oct 2012 and tell us why you should be appointed to the board. The secretary general confirms the reception of the applications after verifying that the attachments are readable. Applications should include a curriculum vitae and a personal view (the maximum of one page) on how the fund could best implement its duty. If you believe that you are suitable for the chairperson’s position, please mention this in your application. The board members are elected directly on the basis of applications.

2. Apply for the committee discussing the policy paper and future of AINO

Do you have a vision of what AYY’s magazine should be like in the future? Apply for the committee through this form!

The application period is open until Thursday, 27 Sept 2012. The working group will convene during the autumn of 2012 as necessary.

Background: AYY’s Representative Council decided on the so-called media issue in its meeting on 6 Sept. Due to the decision, Aate student media will be discontinued from 1 March 2013 onwards and Aino magazine will continue its operations with a new concept (further information on the Representative Council wiki at edustajisto.ayy.fi, meeting 8/2012, meeting item 10). The Representative Council also approved a resolution in which the Board was ordered to convene a working group from among the members, which duty is to prepare Aino’s new policy paper and reconceptualise the magazine.

3. Apply for the acknowledgement working group

Would you like to be involved in discussing who should be awarded with the Student Union’s acknowledgements? The duty of the acknowledgement working group is to invite applications for the recipients of the Student Union’s acknowledgements, process applications and make a presentation to the Student Union Board on the recipients of acknowledgements.

Administrative Manager Janne Koskenniemi acts as the secretary and Archivist/Museum Director Tiina Metso acts as the specialist member of the acknowledgement working group. The acknowledgement working group, which is now elected, will operate until the end of 2013. It is possible to complete the group during the year of 2013. The members of the acknowledgement working group should be motivated and come from different backgrounds.

Application form here.

4. Cleaning service discontinued in shared apartments from 1 Oct onwards

The rent in shared apartments in Teekkari Village and LeppÀvaara has included regular cleaning service of common facilities in shared apartments by the maintenance company. As of 1 Oct, a new property maintenance agreement will come into force, which no longer includes the cleaning of common facilities in shared apartments. After this, residents must ensure the cleanliness of their apartment by themselves. Stairways and common premises in the building will be cleaned as usual.

Cleaning of common premises in shared apartments is discontinued due to high costs and equal treatment of AYY’s tenants. In the properties in Helsinki, the cleaning of common facilities in shared apartments has never been included in the rent.

After 1 Oct, the residents must ensure the cleanliness of common facilities and keep their apartment in a generally acceptable condition. The storing of waste in common facilities or balconies, for example, is strictly prohibited and may result in warnings and even the termination of a rental agreement. If a shared apartment is found to be in an unsuitable condition, a cleaning request is submitted. After the request, the apartment can be cleaned by AYY and cleaning costs will be charged from all residents of the shared apartment. If problems arise, residents may contact the castle warden in their building or AYY’s housing office.

Housing Specialist Jaakko Koivula (050 520 9444, firstname.lastname@ayy.fi) answers any questions and provides additional information.

5. We became process engineers

On Saturday, 15 September, 53 Aalto University students established a new association which purpose is to unite the students in the School of Chemical Technology. In the founding meeting of the association, the first rules and the board for the rest of the year 2012 were approved. The association did not want to be named a chemist or forest guild even if it would be suitable with the school subjects. Prosessiteekkarit (process engineers) were chosen as the name and the abbreviation is PT. Association activities consist of freshman education, interest representation, corporate visits in cooperation with the guild and fun activitities. Actual operations will begin next year, the end of 2012 will be used for planning and creating relations.

Mikaela Mirsch was elected as the first chair of process engineers. ”During the autumn, our main task is to make the association fill the criteria of AYY’s special status associations in 2013″, says the new chair. Other elected board members are Emilia Stenman, Mikko Kiviluoma, Laura Lundell, Mikko Laine, Julia Nyström, Anni Nisov and Paavo MĂ€lkönen.

Today, the students took a step towards the autumn of 2013. Now the bachelor reform should try to keep up with the school. The association website is available at prosessiteekkarit.ayy.fi.

The board is responsible for the granting of scholarships based on applications, while managing the fund’s assets is the duty of AYY Board. The board offers its members a unique vantage point to student activities, as the fund’s opportunity to allocate grants is very significant on AYY’s scale.
