Mass demonstration newsletter – get your hands off the student financial aid!

Student organisations will arrange a mass demonstration in the city centre of Helsinki at 1pm–3.30pm on 20 March 2013. Decisions on the future of student financial aid will be made in connection with the government spending limits discussion on 21 Mar. The Finnish state budget is tight and now it unfortunately seems that student financial aid will be one of the saving targets. The government parties disagree on the development of student financial aid and all options ranging from restrictions to the usage period of student financial aid to loan-oriented student financial aid are possible.

Join the demonstration! Each participant is important in order to make the students’ message loud and clear to decision-makers!

AYY has asked the rectors and deans to cancel lectures during the demonstration so that as many people as possible could come to protest. Many AYY’s associations go to the demonstration together and organise banner workshops, so now is a good time to be creative!
Technology students have been granted the permission to use the student cap in the demonstration between 1pm–3.30pm.

Schedule:

1.00pm Assembling at Senate Square (Senaatintori)
1.15pm Speech of the chairpersons of student organisations
1.30pm Demonstration procession begins marching towards the Parliament House
2.30pm Grilling the politicians at the Parliament House
3.30pm Free concert on Citizens’ Square (Kansalaistori)
3.30 DJs, 4pm Manna duo, 5pm Risto

The demonstration route:
Senate Square – Aleksanterinkatu – Mannerheimintie – Parliament House

3. Come to mass demonstration to support student financial aid on Wednesday 20 Mar

Once again, there is a great deal of commotion around the student financial aid. Decisions on the future of student financial aid are made in connection with the government spending limit discussion on 21 March. The state finances are under strain and it looks like the cost-cutting pressure is targeted at the students. The government parties disagree on the development of student financial aid, and all options from the limiting of the period of student financial aid to student financial aid with emphasis on the loan are possible.

We will meet at the Senate Square at 1pm on Wed 20 Mar 2013. From the Senate Square, we move in a procession to Parliament House to demand answers to equality between generations in education policy. The student movement is fed up with the continuous fiddling with student financial aid. Enough is enough!

More information on the themes and the whole student financial aid situation can be found in Facebook group of NĂ€pit irti opintotuesta campaign.

Check also page opintotuki.fi.

If you act in an organisation, we recommend that you come together to the demonstration. In this way, it is more likely that more people will participate.

2. Student financial aid at risk

The fate of the student financial aid system will be decided in the internal arm wrestling of the Finnish Government during this spring. It is possible that the current student financial aid system will be a system of the past in some respects. Currently, there has been discussion about a model in which the studend would receive student financial aid for the first three (3) years but would have to finance the last two (2) years completely with a loan. The Ministry of Finance would like to go even further and make the student financail aid only consist of a loan. Currently, the government parties are preparing for the mid-term review of the Government (28 Feb) and the spending limits discussion (21 March), around which the student financial aid reform is also realised. AYY will continue to support the student financial aid with the emphasis on the study grant and is getting ready to take to the streets for the cause. Everyone is welcome to get involved in activities. For further information, please contact AYY’s board member in charge of social affairs Laura Euro (laura.euro@ayy.fi, 0505209429).

Would you like to do something with your group of friends or your organisation? The Student Union of the University of Helsinki coordinates the organising of campaigns, further information is available at www.hyy.fi/opintotuki2013

Please return and collect your keys only from Töölö Service Point on 1 March. The housing office in Otaniemi will NOT be able to receive the keys for apartments in Helsinki in order to prevent that new and old residents go to different locations and the keys will not change the owner.

The key service is available at Töölö Service Point according to regular opening hours between 10.30am-2.30pm.
