2. AYY’s Töölö Service Point to close on 28 Oct

AYY Töölö Service Point will be closed on 28 Oct. The reason for this is the transfer of bachelor students to Otaniemi and the reduced need for services on Töölö Campus in general.

The aim is to have the university to continue services on Töölö Campus if possible. Of all the services, the distribution of year tags in the autumn will be carried out in Töölö, for example. The location will be confirmed later. In AYY’s view, it is important to continue to organise necessary services for students in Töölö in the future.

The farewell party of Töölö service point will be celebrated from 2pm onwards on 28 Oct. Welcome to spend a moment at the service point before the doors close!

In the future, the services of Töölö Service Point will continue as follows:

– Copy and printing cards can be purchased from Aalto University’s Töölö Library.
– KY products can be purchased at KY office. At KY office, you can also renew the membership tag of KY.
– Language material can be requested directly from teachers.
– Seasonal year tag distribution points will be available in Töölö.
– Student cards can be ordered to Otaniemi or Arabia service points.
– Ongoing search for a successor for book delivery service. For now, the service is not available.

3. AYY’s Representative Council elections are approaching!

In the Representative Council elections, AYY’s Representative Council of 45 members is elected for the next two-year term. The Representative Council has the highest decision-making power in AYY and decides on your membership fee and the student union regulations, among other things. The Representative Council is always elected for two years at a time.

You can find a suitable candidate from AYY’s candidate matcher at http://edustajistovaalit.fi/index_en.html.

All AYY’s members who have paid the student union’s membership fee by Friday, 16 Oct 2015 are entitled to vote. You can vote in advance through the electronic election system between 12noon on Mon, 26 Oct-12midnight on Mon, 2 Nov or on actual voting days at 12midnight on Tue, 3 Nov – 4pm on Wed, 4 Nov 2015. The election system is available at /vaalit/?lang=en.

In the electronic election system, you can log in with Aalto University username. If your Aalto username does not work for some reason, please contact the University’s IT Service Desk by email at servicedesk@aalto.fi or by telephone: +358 50 513 2000.

The election night party is organised with KY at Saha (Konemiehentie 1) on Wednesday evening on 4 Nov. More information on the elections is available at /vaalit/?lang=en and the minutes and agendas of the Representative Council elections are available at inside.ayy.fi.

4. AYY’s development cooperation week this week!

9. Dominante 40th anniversary concert – JUBILEUM

Dominante’s 40th anniversary will be highlighted with JUBILEUM concert at the Helsinki Music Centre in November: the evening includes premiers and the most impressive works from the history of the choir.

Ordering new music and premieres have been a major part of the choir’s artistic vision. Over the years, the choir has ordered new music both from Finnish and Nordic composers. Commissioned works to be heard in the concert are composed by Matthew Whittall and Dominante’s Deputy Director Yui Katada. Whittall has composed a three-piece series love is a place based on love poems of E. E. Cummings. Katada’s UPOPO also consists of three pieces, which are based on stories of the traditions of the Japanese Ainu tribe.

In addition to premieres, the concert also includes plenty of different moods, which are strengthened by lighting and the movement of the choir and soloists. Veljo Tormis’ Raua needmine and Raymond Murray Schafer’s Narcissos and Echo contain strong dramaturgy, where dance acts as a one narrative element. Aulis Sallinen’s humoresque The Beaufort Scale also exceeds the limits of traditional choral singing. Artist Professor Jorma Uotinen is the director and choreographer of the concert.

Jaakko MĂ€ntyjĂ€rvi’s Tentatio composed for 40 voices is also very suitable for Dominante’s 40th anniversary concert. The overview to Dominante’s programme of previous decades brings up one of our main choral composer Toivo Kuula. His massive ”legacy to Finnish choirs”, Meren virsi, is heard in the concert performed by a great choir, which includes members of Dominante throughout the history of the choir.

6. Survey of accessibility at higher education institutions

Dear higher education student,

In autumn 2015, the Research Foundation for Studies and Education Otus has begun a survey on the accessibility at the higher education institutions in Finland. The results are to be published by the end of the year.

This survey is aimed at students at universities and universities of applied sciences. It aims to gather students’ experiences of accessibility at their own universities. We hope to receive answers from a wide variety of students.

Your answer is important, because you can give valuable information on the accessibility at your higher education institution that can be used for decision-making affecting students and for scientific research. The survey produces follow-up data which is combined with earlier data. This is of help for long term development of educational opportunities for different researched needs.

The survey is concise. It takes you 15 minutes or even less to fill in. The survey is open until 1 November 2015 here: https://www.webropolsurveys.com/S/41785B7DF6B9C389.par. For those who participate in the study there will be a raffle for three 50 euro gift vouchers for stores in the S group.

The data gathered is handled with strict confidentiality. The information we collect will be used only for research purposes. Your information will not be shared with anyone else.

The results will be published at the end of the year in a survey of higher education institutions’ accessibility which aims to develop accessibility at higher education institutions.

We greatly appreciate your replies, thank you for your time!

In the legendary film-making course of Montaasi during the weekend between 9-11 Oct, we go through the basics of script writing, visual narration, lighting and filming, as well as shoot short films in groups to 8 mm colour film. The course thus provides a unique opportunity to make a film to narrow-film which becomes rarer each year.

Films are sent to the laboratory to be developed, after which they are edited in Montaasi’s film cutting room at times agreed upon by the groups. Cutting is carried out with the so-called classical method, by cutting and taping.

More detailed course schedule:
http://montaasi.ayy.fi/event/kaitafilmikurssi-2015/

Further information and registrations via e-mail: montaasi@list.ayy.fi

Fifteen people may attend the course and the price is EUR 25 for Montaasi members. If you are not a member yet, you can pay the membership fee of EUR 5 in connection with the course fee. You can become a member at http://montaasi.ayy.fi/jaseneksi/

10. Aalto Crossroads – Multidisciplinary case competion for Aalto bachelors!

A case competition is a great opportunity to apply your knowledge on a real business problem.

In a case competition, the selected case firm presents a real business problem from its operations, and student teams develop different solutions to it. Each team presents its own solutions to a jury that consists of experts from the firm and other institutions, and gets feedback on them.

The winning team will get a prize that includes a lunch with one of the case company’s managers as well as an excursion to the case firm!

What?
The Aalto Crossroads case competition is open to all of Aalto’s bachelor students. The aim is to first and foremost spread the Aalto spirit and cooperation between students from different Aalto schools, but also to learn new ways to approach problem-solving.

The case itself will be presented in Finnish, but teams are welcome to present their solutions in English.

To participate in the competition, you can form your own four-member team. Just note that at least two different Aalto schools need to be represented in the team.

If you’d like to participate but have no team yet, you can also apply by yourself – the organizers will form teams from other students like you.

A total of 15 teams will be accepted to the competition based on a short (max. 500 words) motivation letter. Justify why you’d like to join, apply and challenge your friends to apply, too! The application deadline is October 15, 2015.

Where and when?
The competition will be organized in the Open Innovation House in Otaniemi on Monday and Tuesday, November 9-10, 2015 as follows:

Monday, November 9: 3-6 pm: “Solving a case: little theory, lots of practice” – a workshop where you’ll learn good ways to solve cases

Tuesday, November 10: 9 am-8 pm: Case competition followed by a social evening

How to join?
Write a short motivation letter about why you / your team should be one of the 15 selected teams. Then, apply by filling out the registration form:
