The day starts with the opening ceremony at Dipoli (Otakaari 24) at 13:00. The jewel of modern Finnish architecture has been restored to its former glory and transformed into the main building of the Aalto University. We welcome you to visit the new Dipoli with the whole Aalto community. After the ceremony, Dipoli’s doors are open to all starting from 14:30.

3. How should the Klondyke hall be used?

Is there still some place in Otaniemi that the Aalto students are missing? Do we need more craft rooms, seminar halls or maybe an opportunity to compete in Crash Team Racing after lunch?

The Aalto University Student Union AYY has been given permission to design activities that its members would like to see in Dipoli’s Klondyke hall. We want your opinions and ideas on what the space should be like!

You can find the questionnaire here: https://lomake.ayy.fi/viestinta/klondyke/

6. HCC is back!

The traditional party of the Guild of Materials and Metallurgy Students, Hard Cock Café, will make a flashy return to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the guild. Rumour has it that the roots of HCC are in Smökki, where refreshments were enjoyed around an enormous wooden “rooster”.

This time around the theme is classier, as you are invited to arrive wearing black and white, ready to party like there’s no tomorrow! So make your way to Bar Loose in the eastern harbour city on Friday, September 15th. The party gets started at 20:00.

Get your tickets from https://www.ticted.com/fi/events/4171, or buy one at the Guild’s tent at Aalto Party on September 8th!

Where: Bar Loose

When: September 15th from 20:00 to 4:00

7. KYN: Loitsut concert

Sat, October 21st 2017 at 15:00 and 19:00, Kattilahalli, Suvilahti, Helsinki

Jukka Linkola’s Loitsut (Spells) suite, composed for the KYN female choir, is transformed into a stage performance combining music, movement, light and image under the direction of Janne Marja-aho. Panu Savolainen’s vibraphone colors the work, which was originally composed a cappella. Mika Venhovaara’s lights and VJ Hellstone’s live visuals bring the rich world of spells to the rugged Kattilahalli.

The choir is led by Kaija Viitasalo.

Events where the authors tell more about the background of the work are held 45 min. before the performances.

Tickets (27.50/22.50/16.50 €) and ticket + record bundles (42.50/37.50/32.50 €) from Tiketti.

  • You need to apply for the general housing allowance separately from the Kela eService
  • Apply for the allowance for August no later than the end of September
  • More info on the housing allowance can be found on the Kela website

Living with a roommate?

  • Read the Kela blog on how to apply for general housing allowance in a shared apartment

1. General housing allowance as an AYY tenant

Students will be moved under the general housing allowance on the 1st of August 2017, meaning that the entire household’s income will affect the amount of the allowance. Below you can find the specific instructions for applying. The instructions apply to AYY tenants.

Shared apartment or a furnished shared apartment

AYY is drafting personal rental agreements to shared apartments, meaning that each tenant forms their own household. If you live in a shared apartment, apply for housing allowance alone. The income of other tenants does not affect the amount of received housing allowance.

Studio or a studio in a shared apartment

If you live alone in a studio or a studio in a shared apartment, your household only consists of you alone. People living in studios in shared apartments are not affected by the income of other tenants. People living alone apply for housing allowance alone.

If, however, you share a studio or a studio in a shared apartment with someone else, you consist of a shared household. Kela will always decree these households to be cohabiting, and the income of each person will affect the allowance. Apply for the allowance jointly.

Duplex, Three-room apartments and four-room apartments

Current situation

AYY is making friend- and family rental agreements to duplexes and three-and four-room apartments, which all have shared responsibilities. This means that people living in friend- and family agreements form one household, and the income of all will affect the allowance. People living in a duplex, three-room or four-room apartment with a shared rental agreement must apply for the allowance jointly.

If you are the only primary tenant in a duplex, three-or four-room apartment, and you have sub-letted a part of the apartment to one or more people, you may apply for the housing allowance alone. The sub-letters may also apply alone, if each sub-letter has their own separate sub-let rental agreement.

If you live alone, the situation is same as with people living in studios, and you may apply for the allowance alone.

AYY upcoming actions

AYY is currently undertaking a project to increase communal living. As a part of this project, apartments with several bedrooms are being converted to shared apartments and we are creating means where shared apartments could be applied to in the same way as friend apartments now. The aim is that on a long term AYY would have only shared apartments, shared studios, studios and family apartments available to its tenants. The timetable for these changes will be published to the tenants when they become relevant.

The new Atlantinkatu student apartment building houses 122 apartments, and they will be ready for moving in on the 1st of September 2017. Due to its location, it is a totally new type of building for AYY. Because of this, the application process for the apartments has been revised. The queue spots will be drawn by lot between applications sent before the 31st of May 2017. Otherwise, the date of submission of the application does not affect the application process. According to a decision made by AYY’s Board, all AYY members will be given an equal opportunity to apply for the Jätkäsaari apartments, and because of this, all applicants will receive a point for location regardless of their study campus. The lots will be drawn between point groups. After May, the application for the apartments will continue according to the normal queue system.

All residential applications for the Jätkäsaari apartments will be processed by the 15th of June 2017, and the lottery will also take place at that time. Shortly thereafter, the applicants who had luck with the lottery will receive an apartment offer to the email address they have entered in their application. The offer must be accepted within four days, so remember to check your email also in June! The apartment offer also acts as a rental agreement, which the applicant accepts or rejects in the Domo system.

KYN, the female choir that has made a splash also outside of Finland, shook the world of music by showing what a female choir can do with their critically acclaimed album Jos minä puhuisin sinulle, released in October. The ethnic jazz tailored for KYN by Mikko Hassinen challenges the choir to become a part of an ensemble consisting of Manuel Dunkel, Ville Herrala and Mikko Hassinen and to take on the roles of jazz instruments in the a cappella arrangements. The result is a real fireworks display, a fantastic combination of choir and jazz music!
