2. Representative Council Elections Lobby Debate on Oct 11th and Nov 1st

How is the Otaniemi student center progressing? How are our membership fees spent? What direction is our Student Union going to in the next two years?

The Representative Council Elections for Aalto University’s Student Union AAY are coming, and the students are filled with questions regarding the community in the next few years. Come and meet the representatives of electoral coalitions face to face at the Lobby Debate and find out what the future holds.

The debates are held on the 11th of October and 1st of November at 11:00–14:00 at Otakaari 1! 4. Companies in the Kotka-Hamina region are recruiting skilled professionals in Helsinki on the 13th of October

The supply and demand of labor don’t always meet. This mismatch is present in many countries, usually found between the metropolitan area and other regions. Young and well-trained job seekers typically believe that “all opportunities are found in the capital” or that “all true professionals live in the capital.” As the talented people slowly move out from these regions, they have to be tempted back through various campaigns. The Kotka-Hamina region development company Cursor will bring a busload of companies from the Kotka-Hamina region in need of new professionals to the middle of Helsinki on Friday, the 13th of October. We want to show that you can find bigger apartments, your dream job and interesting hobbies outside the Helsinki metropolitan area. In the Kotka-Hamina region, you don’t have to sit in the traffic or scrape by in a small apartment, and you can make use of your skills in internationally competitive companies.

Have you recently graduated or are about to graduate from a university or university of applied sciences and are looking for a job? At the Rekryrakkaus (“Recruitment Love”) event, you can talk your way to a job interview with a company on the very same day, so be prepared. You can come alone, with a friend or with the whole family to find out more about the work situation in the Kotka-Hamina region on the 13th of October at 11:00-17:00 in Sanomatalo in Helsinki.

www.visitkotkahamina.fi/rekryrakkaus

5. AYY’s volunteer search for 2018

7. AYY’s new fantastic cabinet and sauna facility in JĂ€tkĂ€saari

AYY’s new apartment building in JĂ€tkĂ€saari, Helsinki, was completed in early September. The new residents have moved to the apartments of Atlantinkatu 7, but other members also get the chance to enjoy the new premises and the surrounding landscape, as there is a spacious cabinet and sauna facility with a beautiful terrace located on the top floor of the house, which all members can rent at a members’ price. The space is perfect for sauna parties and meetings, and it can be rented between 16:00 and 23:00. The sauna is heated between 18:00 to 22:00.

For more information on the facility and terms of use regarding its rental, please visit /jasenille/palvelut/tilojen-vuokraaminen/saunat/atlantinkatu/

We accept reservations starting from the 10th of October, but you can make a reservation right now if you want to. The rent for the space is 200 euros for members and associations and 400 euros for external parties.

8. Design contest: Aalto University Provost’s chain of office

AYY invites all students to an open contest to design and create academic honors (a chain of office) for the Provost of the Aalto University. The chain is an academic honor worn in academic and state events by the Provost, such as in the opening ceremony of the Aalto University, the conferment ceremony and parades.

The design contest is open to all Aalto students, and you can participate alone or in teams of two. The aim of the contest is to design a modern chain of office that clearly depicts the values of Aalto and the Aalto spirit. Interdisciplinary design solutions are considered a plus.

The designs must be submitted electronically to the Secretary General of AYY by Monday, the 16th of October 2017 by 16:00. The winner of the design contest will receive a monetary reward of 1500 EUR. The panel of judges will also hand out awards for merit!

6. #LuovutusAalto is here again!

Nearly a thousand voluntary blood donors are needed every weekday to make sure that about 50,000 seriously ill patients receive the treatment they need every year. That is why AYY is once again organizing the #LuovutusAalto blood donation challenge in co-operation with the Blood Service. The challenge begins this autumn at the start of the Aalto Wellbeing Week and lasts until the 30th of November.

The challenge is open to all associations active within AYY. During the campaign, the associations that have donated the most blood, both quantitatively and in percentage terms in relation to their number of members, are awarded the use of one of AYY’s sauna facilities for one night, as well as receiving fame and glory. Inkubio won the contest last spring! 😉

The Blood Service will also have its own stand in Otaniemi on the 3rd of October! Come and hear more about blood groups and the Stem Cell Registry and register your association for the competition!

The lecture will be held in English and no registration is needed.

Juha ÄkrĂ€s: “To be well is to be whole. Wellbeing is a holistic concept. This means that in order to improve our wellbeing, we need to think carefully about how all the elements in our life and environment interact. We also need to consider our journey – the big picture of our life – as we can only change for the better, if we are clear about where we begin and what direction we want to move in. Big goals are achieved by taking small, meaningful steps, which reflect our unique identity, challenges and objectives. This will lead to inspiration and intrinsic motivation, which in turn will lead to better performance as well.”

26. Call for Idea Proposals on Online/blended Learning, dl October 11th, 2017

We call now for idea proposals from all Aalto people (faculty, program directors, researchers, staff, students) on online/blended learning. The best ideas will be selected and people involved invited to join the Aalto Online Learning – A!OLE Coaching Network. The network provides support on design, technology and pedagogy for you to implement the proposed idea in practice. After the evaluation of the ideas, we can also discuss funding to allow for full concentration on developing the idea into reality.

The proposed idea can concern development of an existing course or a completely new course, several courses jointly, or a whole major or minor. In addition, we welcome proposals which concern some other type of educational activity (like pedagogical training, skills training or developing novel digital services which support students’ learning and education). Please note that while several questions below use term “course” (for simplicity), we encourage interpreting the question in the context of the targeted educational activity.

Supporting ideas to help them become reality may include funding in two phases. Seed funding will allow exploring and identifying appropriate tools, technologies, existing online resources and pedagogical principles on which to build a new A!OLE pilot. A part of the seed funded phase is also to discover options for collaboration with existing A!OLE pilots.

The seed funding is meant for preparing a better informed proposal in terms of the schedule and budget to support the implementation of the pilot idea. After this phase, augmented proposals need to still be separately accepted, but with a high potential for acceptance.

It is, however, also possible to submit a complete proposal with the implementation budget, if appropriate details are presented already in the form below.

The idea proposals are continuously evaluated as they arrive until October 11th 2017 by noon, the final deadline for this round of proposals.

Please submit your idea by using the following form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRjrJyOi33jka4j2k2s8iMg3UQ–6ch6kdb3NIrcy7FC4Dkg/viewform?usp=sf_link

A more detailed schedule for the course can be found at montaasi.ayy.fi

The network provides support on design, technology and pedagogy for you to realize the proposed idea in practice. After the evaluation of the ideas we can also discuss on funding to allow for full concentration on developing the idea to reality.

The proposed idea can concern development of an existing course or a novel course, several courses jointly, or a whole major or minor. In addition, we welcome proposals which concern some other type of educational activity (like pedagogical training, skills training or developing novel digital services which support students’ learning and education). Note, while several questions below use term “course” (for simplicity), we encourage interpreting the question in the context of the targeted educational activity.

Supporting ideas to become reality may include funding in two phases. Seed funding will allow exploring and identifying appropriate tools, technologies, existing online resources and pedagogical principles on which to build a new A!OLE pilot. A part of seed funded phase is also to discover options for collaboration with existing A!OLE pilots.

The seed funding is meant for preparing a better informed proposal in terms of the schedule and budget to support implementating the pilot idea. After this phase, augmented proposals need still to be separately accepted, but with a high potential for acceptance.

It is, however, also possible to submit a complete proposal with the implementation budget, if appropriate details are presented already in the form below.

The idea proposals are continuously evaluated as they arrive until October 11th at noon, 2017, the final deadline for this round of proposals.

Please submit your idea by using the following form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRjrJyOi33jka4j2k2s8iMg3UQ–6ch6kdb3NIrcy7FC4Dkg/viewform?usp=sf_link

6. Humans vs Zombies Otaniemi 25.–29.9.

The zombie virus is spreading! Does humanity have any chance against the ever-growing zombie horde? This autumn continues the story of the spring. Thanks to international banking system, Technodeal Group Ltd. didn’t collapse and is now going strong again. Remaining humans need to do something to stop the vicious plans!

Humans vs. Zombies is a moderated game of tag where zombie players try to spread the infection by tagging human players. Humans can in turn protect themselves by hiding, fleeing or fighting back (using clean socks or foam gun darts to “stun” zombies). The game is fun and interactive. Since teamwork is often the best strategy, players are guaranteed to meet new people. HvZ is created for campuses like Otaniemi, so we couldn’t have a better area for this!

TAK is organizing its traditional racing day at the Ahvenisto Race Circuit on Sunday, the 24th of September, between 12:00 and 16:00. This joyous test drive session costs 10€ for club members and 20€ for non-members, but you can join the club on the same day if you want to by paying the annual membership fee of 12€, provided that you meet the other conditions (AYY membership and interest in the club’s activities).

The most important minimum requirement for your car is that it has seat belts and a muffler, meaning that you don’t need to own a real rally car or borrow one from your dad or friend. There are some other small requirements for the car that keep it together and on the road, but nothing that any roadworthy vehicle wouldn’t meet. And even though you have to get the car you want to drive yourself, you don’t have to find the circuit all on your own, as we will meet and head for the circuit together if any of the participants so wish.

More information can be found in AYY’s event calendar and/or on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1604771236253556/  – and it’s probably not a bad idea to check out TAK’s website at http://tak.ayy.fi.

The Council is always chosen for 2-year term.

All members of the Student Union who have signed up for attendance and paid their membership fee by the 15th of September 2017 are eligible to vote.

You may set yourself up as a candidate by filling out the candidate form and by submitting it to AYY by the 2nd of October 2017. A candidate can join the existing electoral alliances or set one up with another candidate. The electoral alliances can be found here: /vaalit/vaaliliitot/.

3. The celebratory year Sillis is the cherry on top of the festive year!

500 years ago, a German monk who was fond of beer published some pretty radical views. These views caused a lot of changes in the Nordics: Finland received a written language of its own and the populace was taught how to read.

The festive year is celebrated at Smökki on the 1st of October with a sillis (“herring breakfast”)! Aalto-papit, AYY and the Tapiola parish wish to extend a helping hand to students wallowing in the backlash of the lakinlaskijaiset celebrations: On Sunday 1st of October we eat, bathe in the sauna and splash in the hot tub. Food is supplied by Hupli caterers, available for a student-friendly price of 5,50 euro.

There is space for the first 100 people who sign up.

WHAT: Celebratory year Sillis

7. Humans vs Zombies Otaniemi 25.–29.9.

Apocalypse!

The zombie virus is spreading! Does humanity have any chance against the ever growing zombie horde? This autumn continues the story of the spring. Thanks to international banking system, Technodeal Group Ltd. didn’t collapse and is now going strong again. Remaining humans need to do something to stop the vicious plans!

Humans vs. Zombies is a moderated game of tag where zombie players try to spread the infection by tagging human players. Humans can in turn protect themselves by hiding, fleeing or fighting back (using clean socks or foam gun darts to “stun” zombies). The game is fun and interactive. Since teamwork is often the best strategy players are guaranteed to meet new people. HvZ is created for campuses like Otaniemi, we couldn’t have better area for this!

Participation is completely free of charge. The organizers will provide the game scarf and ID-tag for you. All you have to do is sign up, show up and play.

16. Mindfulness workshops

Mindfulness is approving presence. It means a conscious choice to be able to stop and concentrate on this moment – our thoughts wander easily to the future or past. Mindfulness skills help you to notice the current moment and live in it. Regular mindfulness practice is known to reduce stress. The practicing of conscious presence in studies helps to bypass unnecessary disruptive factors, concentrate better and avoid the fear of failure that comes from excessive self-criticism. There are two different mindfulness workshops on offer in the autumn, both in Finnish and English:

Mindfulness in stress management:

English-speaking group: Mondays 14:00–16:00, 18th Sept–16th Oct 2017, Otakaari 1.
