In both reader surveys, we raffle three movie ticket packages among the respondents who have submitted their email addresses. Responses will be treated confidentially and are used anonymously for editorial purposes in Aino magazine. Replies will not be published online.

3. Sell your goods at Treasure Market

AYY will organise the Treasure Market (Aarremarkkinat) on Saturday, 7 May, 11am-5pm at KY’s alakertsi and restaurant Nolla (Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 21). Treasure Market is a combination of a jumble sale, flea market and exchange market completed with brunch at restaurant Nolla! You have three options to recycle the stuff you no longer need: sell, donate or exchange!

Flea market: Sell it yourself or donate for sale to AYY’s Development Cooperation section. One man’s trash  is another one’s treasure! You can come and sell your goods for free in the traditional flea market or, alternatively, donate your stuff to AYY’s Development Cooperation section. AYY’s Development Cooperation section will use the profit for the development cooperation project in Swaziland.
Exchange: You do not always need money for trading but instead you can exchange your stuff or your own time. How about sewing overall badges in exchange for massage or offering bike maintenance in exchange for kitchen appliances? 4. Do you want to represent Aalto in a swimming contest in Shanghai?

Tongji University in Shanghai will organise a swimming competition to its universities in cooperation. The competition will be organised on 21‒26 Aug 2011. The University may send one 4-person team (captain, coach, one female and one male representative) to the competition. Tongji will cover accommodation costs and other expenses related to the programme below.

If you are interested, gather a four-person team and register to the address teemu.peltokallio@ayy.fi by 15 May. If several teams are willing to participate, we will interview the captains. Swimming skills and the enthusiasm to represent Aalto in China are further advantages when selecting the team.

It is good to remember that the expenses on the spot are covered by Tongji but the team has to pay for their travel expenses+taxes, visas, insurances, etc. by themselves. 5. Aid for international projects

Aalto University  provides an opportunity to apply for financial aid for international projects. This aid is provided so that Aalto members have a better chance to develop their international potential. Please submit your application no later than 30 Apr 2011 at international@aalto.fi. 6. Design a logo for Kyky Project

Kyky project aims to promote students’ ability to study together with the university and student organisations. Study ability is a student’s work capacity which consists of a student’s resources, study skills, learning environment and teaching and guidance activities. Study ability is connected with learning results, the conduct of studies and the future work capacity.

Now Kyky Project needs a logo and we declare a logo contest for the students of Aalto University and the University of Tampere. We hope that the logo conveys study ability, communality, student-centredness and active life. The logo’s size, colour and shape are optional. We also need the logo in black and white and it must be suitable to be used in printed materials and online. The winner will be rewarded with 400 euro. You can participate until the end of May.

Please submit your proposal as a PDF-document to laura.heinonen@syl.fi no later than 4pm on Tuesday, 31 May. Laura can also provide further information (044-3093520). The winner will be chosen in early June by a jury which includes representatives from both universities, student unions and the National Union of University Students in Finland. 7. New cooking programme of OUBS

The new production of AYY’s TV channel, OUBS; Kokkaa ite! (Cook it yourself!) started broadcasting on 7 April. Kokkaa ite! Is a cooking programme intended for students, where tasty recipes take into account a tight budget often familiar to students. Presenters Viljami Julkunen and Miikka Pakarinen share cooking tips and techniques. Episodes will be aired on Thursday evenings on YouTube and OUBS website. New episodes will be published for eight weeks.

8. ÄPY GALA 2011, Tue, 26 Apr, 3pm

It is again time to reveal the most famous trademark of May Day, technology students’ own Äpy magazine. Laulikki Äpy shocks the nation with a surprising and cunning yet wonderfully funny product which is perhaps the juiciest ever.

Welcome to the spectacular Äpy Gala in Hall A of the former main building of TKK on Tuesday, 26 April at 3pm. The surest way to participate in this event is to make a seller contract before the gala which gives you a VIP invitation to the best seats and the cocktail party!

9. Use the FSHS call back service – one call is enough!

FSHS is piloting a callback service at Töölö and Otaniemi health centres between 15 March and 31 May 2011. It is important that you leave a message in the answering machine if your call is not answered. This will speed up the handling of your case. One call is enough – your details will be saved in FSHS system. Nurses will  call you back on the same day. FSHS aims to speed up the callback service as soon as possible.

10. Product Design Gala on 20 Apr 2011

Product Design Gala, the annual review of the student projects of the interdisciplinary Product Development Project of Engineering Design and Production will be organised on Wednesday, 20 April 2011 at Design Factory (Betonimiehenkuja 5 c). Further information at www.pdp.fi/gala

2.      61st Akateeminen Wartti, back to the roots

Akateeminen Wartti (”academic quarter”) is a carnival-like running event arranged already for six decades, which aim is to gather students to celebrate May Day in a sporty atmosphere. Six-person teams try to proceed as far as possible as a team in 15 minutes. The best outfits, batons and the most successful teams will be rewarded. Over the years, baby bottles, blow-up dolls and even a living goat have acted as a baton. However, the most important things are the May Day spirit and the carnival atmosphere! You can participate in Akateeminen Wartti with a six-person team.

• Pokaalisarja/Trophy Series, free of charge
• Wapaa Wartti/Free Quarter, free of charge
• Sikariporras/Cigar league, 60e per team

3.       Aalto Wappu Teaser on 19 Apr

The event will start with a Wappu orientation and a cocktail party organised for international students in the KY House  (Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 21) at 5pm. The purpose is to tell international students about all the fun events that will be arranged during the last week of April. 4.      ESN Tandem project: practice a foreign language with a native speaker

Do you want to learn to speak a foreign language fluently? Try out a language exchange with a native speaker! You can find a partner through the Tandem project arranged by ESN Aalto. In the project, you get paired with a student whose mother tongue is the language of your choice and who wants to learn your native language. You can meet as often as you wish and practice each language half of the time. Both participants can learn each other’s language and learn about each other’s countries and cultures. 5.      Nyyti offers volunteer work

Nyyti is participating in the European Year of Volunteering and looking for volunteers for marketing duties, in particular. Volunteers can work at fairs, events and occasions by handing out Nyyti’s brochures. The organisation is also looking for motivated people to lead the hangout nights and be involved in offering  alternative nights for students.

Voluntary work will properly begin in the autumn of 2011, but you can already sign up at Nyyti’s website. All adults are welcome to make their own contribution in the field of volunteering. You can read more at Nyyti’s website (in Finnish).

6.      CAREERLAB Landing on the Finnish job market

Aalto University Career Services (technology) is organising an event to help you better understand how the job hunting process and Finnish labour market work. This is an opportunity for you to hear how other foreigners have managed to get employed here and to ask questions you have about entering the labour market in Finland.

7.      Aalto University participating in CMI’s anniversary seminar

The anniversary seminar of Crisis Management Initiative (CMI), founded by President Ahtisaari, will be arranged in Helsinki on 19 April. The keynote speaker is Mr. Kofi Annan. Aalto members have the opportunity of their life to participate in these unique events arranged both on 18 and 19 April.

On Monday, 18 April, 2pm-4pm, CMI’s preview lecture We want peace is organised for Aalto members in the Assembly Hall of Aalto University School of Economics. In the preview lecture, a Sudanese peacemaker, former child soldier and hiphop artist Emmanuel Jal will tell his story. In addition, CMI’s Executive Director Tuija Talvitie will present CMI’s operations and its projects and assignments in various conflict areas in Africa, Middle East, Black Sea region and South-East Asia, for example.

You can follow CMI’s actual 10^th anniversary seminar on Tuesday, 19 April, 2pm-6pm, as a live streaming in Sampo Hall of Media Centre Lume. The keynote speaker of the seminar is the former Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan. Among other speakers, Swanee Hunt, lecturer at Harvard and an ambassador, will speak in the seminar arranged in the Finnish National Theatre. The seminar is hosted by Al Jazeera’s presenter Stephen Cole.

10. Art exhibition BIG WORDS

Aalto University’s postgraduate student association Aallonhuiput will organise an art exhibition ”BIG WORDS” at Gallery Atski on 12-29 April. The theme of the exhibition is dissertation works and the artists are doctoral students from the various schools of Aalto University.

2. AYY’s great election panel!

How should careers be lengthened? How many nuclear plant permissions will be provided in the next electoral term? Will education be free in the future? Will Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen be merged with Helsinki? Will Finland join NATO? You can get answers to these and many other questions in the great election panel of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY)! The event will be arranged at Otakaari 1 (TKK’s old main building), Hall A, 2^nd floor, 4pm-6pm, on Wednesday, 6 April. The following MP candidates will answer the questions: Raija Vahasalo (kok), Antti Kaikkonen (kesk), Mikael Jungner (SDP), Jussi Saramo (vas), Jyrki Kasvi (vihr), Christina Gestrin (RKP), Arto Lahti (KD) and Simon Elo (ps).

3. Advance polling stations of the parliamentary elections on Aalto University campuses

The advance voting of the parliamentary elections will be organised on 6-12 April 2011. You need to have your identity card with you and the notice of your right to vote which you have received by mail. You can vote in advance on Aalto University campuses at the following locations:

In Arabianranta Library in Aralis library centre (Hämeentie 135 A, Helsinki), you can vote on weekdays between 10am-6pm and on Saturday, 9 April and Sunday, 10 April at 10am-3pm.

In Otaniemi campus library (Otaniementie 9, Espoo), you can vote on weekdays at 9am-8pm and on Saturday, 9 April and Sunday, 10 April at 12noon-4pm. The polling station is located in the lecture hall of the library. On Sunday, only the lobby, lecture hall  and toilets are open in the library.

The nearest advance polling station to the School of Economics is the main post office in Helsinki  (Elielinaukio 2 F, Helsinki),where you can vote on weekdays at 8am-8pm and on the weekend at 10am-4pm.

4. AYY’s ribbon on sale at the service points of Otaniemi and the School of Economics

AYY’s members can now buy the student union ribbon from the service points of Otaniemi and the School of Economics. The colours of AYY’s ribbon from top to bottom are purple (PMS 248U) and silver. Colour relations are 5-2. Ribbon width is 3 centimetres. The price of the full-length ribbon (2 metres) is 4 euro. The ribbon can also be used as a rosette, in which case it is used on the right bodice of a dress. You need 1.50 metres of ribbon for the rosette, which costs 3 euro.

All current and former student union members and employees have the right to use the ribbon. The student union ribbon is worn from the right shoulder down to the left hip. Men and women wear the ribbon in a similar manner. The ribbon is worn over clothes and it should not touch bare skin.

5. AYY and Red Cross organise a fund raise on Thursday, 7 April

Japan’s earthquake has again reminded us that disaster can happen anytime and anywhere. Now you can act and help the victims of the disaster: gather a group of friends, a freshman group or take your whole association and join the fund raise with donation cans on Thursday, 7 April. In the fund raise, you can help the victims of various disasters in current and future catastrophes around the world. The funds are directed to Red Cross’s disaster fund. In addition to good conscience, the group which collects the most funds can decide which AYY premises they want to rent for free.

6. Two week’s holiday at the summer university of AEGEE – the application period is ongoing!

Are you interested in getting to know another country’s culture guided by local students or spend some ecstatic time in the bustle of some European city? If you think this sounds too good to be true, don’t worry! This is not a profit-making agency or a scam for students but a super-duper-hyper opportunity to spend a great summer holiday provided by the international student organisation AEGEE! The application deadline is  24 April. Application instructions to the summer universities are available at AEGEE-Helsinki website at www.aegee-helsinki.org.

This is a summer course of approximately two weeks which does not involve any academic studies or credit fishing. Instead, the summer university offers courses with different themes in numerous European destinations. Courses are attended by 20-30 European students with whom you can celebrate, learn and make friends with during two weeks. The themes of the courses may vary from dancing to journalism and from politics to art! The maximum participation fee is only €90 per week. The price includes at least accommodation, breakfast, one hot meal each day as well as trips included in the programme.

You can hear more about all this when you arrive at the info night of the summer university at 6pm on Monday, 11 April 2011, on the main side of KY premises (Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 21B, 3^rd floor).

7. Suggest a Teaching Act of the spring 2011

Is teaching valued enough at Aalto University? Have you experienced great teaching at Aalto this spring?

ADF Teacher Forum has launched the Teaching Act of the Spring 2011 challenge among all the pedagogical actors at Aalto. The winning act – either large or small, done by either a student, teacher or other Aalto member(s) – must have somehow contributed to enhancing a new, student-oriented, problem-based, fun, innovative, motivating, multidisciplinary or otherwise better learning culture at Aalto University.

Suggestions for outstanding teaching acts can be sent to Maria Clavert via email (maria.clavert@aalto.fi) by 8 April 2011. In your suggestion, please describe the teaching act and reveal the name(s) behind the action. The winning act will be voted in Teacher Forum on 18 April. Join the action and suggest your favourite Teaching Act of the spring!

8. Respond to the customer survey of University Sports Services

What kind of sports services do you want? Are you satisfied with the current services of University Sports Services? Please tell us about your hopes and experiences by responding to the customer survey of University Sports Services. You can help the university sports services to develop their services and you can win product prizes or a gift certificate to a massage.
