Specialist/project manager for the development and coordination of housing services

The specialist’s duties include the description and re-evaluation of the customer service of housing rental operations in the Student Union and the service reform based on them. The specialist also answers to residents’ questions and provides advice on housing matters. The position also includes the coordination of finances and activities of resident democracy organs in the student union housing. In addition, the specialist participates in the Student Union’s influencing work related to construction and urban planning, within the scope of skills and interests.

Housing Secretary for Otaniemi Service Point

The housing secretary’s duties include, among other things, the processing of housing applications, preparing rental agreements, coordination and responses to various housing inquiries, housing-related reporting and the development of housing activities. This is a full time, open-ended position.

3. Aalto on Waves: Apply now!

Don’t you just love the summer: sun, beach, friends and doing all kinds of fun stuff together? Wouldn’t it be nice to continue on doing that when November and winter hits and do something useful and meaningful at the same time? If you answered yes, yes and yes, then get aboard Aalto on Waves!

The second application round is open now! This will give applicants who did not succeed in the first round a chance to improve their applications, as well as new applicants the chance to be part of an incredible journey!

4. 100th anniversary logo contest of the Guild of Civil Engineers

The Guild of Civil Engineers will open a logo contest in the honour of its 100th anniversary. Design a logo for the anniversary year and WIN A GIFT CERTIFICATE OF €100 FOR STOCKMANN DEPARTMENT STORE! The logo will be used in advertising, materials, etc. related to the 100th anniversary. The 100th anniversary of the guild will begin in the autumn of 2012 and culminate in the annual celebration, the 100th Hermanninsitsi in April 2013!

You can participate in the contest by sending your suggestion to the chairperson of the guild juho.rahko(Ă€t)aalto.fi between 1 Sept and 25 Sept 2011, before 4pm. The chairpersons of the 100th anniversary committees of the guild will choose the winner.

5. Otatarha Race, 30 Sept, 2pm–5pm

Design, create, build, challenge yourself and others, and get excited.. all this is possible, as you and your group of friends have the opportunity to participate in a formula-like race with a self-made, non-motorised vehicle. The best teams will be rewarded so get prepared for the competition in good time! Each group will get points for the speed and style of the vehicle as well as for their team spirit. Please remember to register your team in time, no later than 26 Sept!

Even if you do not participate in the competition, you should come to the race as the whole Alvari Square will be filled with bustling race atmosphere on 30 Sept! You can get to the race mood by watching the video from the autumn of 2010.

6. Builders of The Future design contest for students, staff members and alumni

Aalto University will organise a design contest to create a memorial to persons who donated funds for the University’s original capital. The contest is open to Aalto students, staff members and alumni.

The contest is divided into two stages.
First stage of the contest 1 Sep 2011–31 Oct 2011
Second stage of the contest 16 Nov 2011–16 Jan 2012

Prizes

The contest and more information will be published on Thursday 1 September 2011 at aalto.fi/tulevaisuudenrakentajat. An information briefing for participants will be held at Sampo Hall in the School of Art and Design, HĂ€meentie 135 C, 10am-12noon, on 7 Sep 2011. A live broadcast will be streamed through the address aalto.fi/tulevaisuudenrakentajat.

7. Alumni questionnaire

Do you want to network and collaborate with Aalto alumni? Are you interested in learning about the career stories and work experience of the alumni? What could alumni relations mean to you?

We want to actively develop and improve our operations and services. That is why we have created this questionnaire concerning our activities and we hope that you will find the time to respond to this questionnaire. Please let us know your thoughts on how we have succeeded in our work so far, and also what you, as a student, expect from us in the future.

Responding to the questionnaire will take approx. 5–10 minutes of your time. Please respond by 15 September at the latest.

8. Autumn term of Polijazz, the dance club of Aalto members, will begin

This autumn, Polijazz offers students regular weekly classes and intensive dance courses! Regular weekly classes will begin on week 37 and continue until the week 49.

Polijazz’s regular weekly classes in the autumn of 2011 are:

CONTEMPORARY DANCE on Thursdays, BREAKDANCE on Thursdays, COUPLE SALSA on Fridays, STREETMIX on Fridays, REGGAETON-CON-SALSA on Fridays (see the more specific schedule and teachers online).

In addition, Polijazz will organise intensive dance courses on Mondays and Saturdays during the whole autumn! Intensive courses will begin a week after the regular classes, and there are separate registrations and course fees for each course. There will be many interesting courses, such as show jazz, an advanced course in breakdance, street dance and pilates or ballet!

The membership fee of Polijazz for one regular weekly class in the autumn term is 35 euro. Additional weekly classes cost 45 euro for 2 hours per week and 50 euro for 3 hours per week. Classes are paid to Polijazz account 130930-59683, Nordea Otaniemi, with the reference 13. You can try out the first class for free!

9. Foil fencing for beginners, 20 Sept–13 Oct 2011

The beginner’s course will begin on Tuesday, 20 Sept 2011, at 7pm. There are 8 classes, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7pm-8.30pm, in fencing hall 2 at Töölö Sports Hall (Kisahalli).

Please bring your indoor sports clothing and indoor sport shoes to the beginner’s course, the club provides weapons and other equipment. After the beginner’s course, you have the opportunity to participate in the advanced course and get to know other weapon types of fencing, a saber and a sword.

The course fee is 90 euro for students and 120 euro for others. The maximum of 20 people can participate in the course and we will fill the course in the registration order.

10. Join the Academic Choral Society

Our repertoire includes classic a cappella music, voluminous orchestral works, modern choral compositions and folk songs. Academic Choral Society is looking for new, unique and enthusiastic singers from across the university borders. We are looking for male singers, in particular, but women are also welcome.

We will have open rehearsals and audition at Meritullintori 3, Helsinki, on Thursday, 8 September, 6pm–9pm.

7 Wonders Campus Walks (20, 21 & 22.9)

Come and discover 7 Wonders of Aalto campuses!  Join us for a guided walk and discover seven distinct, dare we say wonderful, features of one Aalto University campus area – plus each walk includes a surprise!

New International Students from all universities in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area are welcome to sign up.

One campus walk will take place on each of the following days:

20.9 – Otaniemi

21.9 – Töölö

22.9 – Arabia

From 16:00-18:00 each day

We are offering a place for one campus walk per student.  However there is a maximum amount of places per walk, thus registration is required in advance.

2. Informing in AYY’s weekly newsletter and the association newsletter

The weekly newsletter is AYY’s newsletter which is published during the academic terms in Finnish on Mondays and in Swedish and English on Tuesdays. Texts for the newsletter should be submitted to the communications officer (tiedottaja@ayy.fi) by 10 am on the previous Friday. The weekly newsletter can be read at ayy.fi/viikkotiedote. Through the same link, you can also subscribe to the weekly email summary of the newsletter. In the future, the number of the newsletter indicates the week that the newsletter concerns.

The section ‘this week’s events’ of the newsletter automatically includes the events which associations publish in AYY’s event calendar. If an association does not have a user name for adding events, it can be requested from Web Developer Rekik Haile (rekik.haile@ayy.fi). Other content in the newsletter consists of the current news and events of the university, the student union and the organisations operating under the student union. The newsletter primarily aims to publish newsletters and events which concern as many Aalto members as possible.

As its name suggests, the association newsletter is directed to the associations and is published on Fridays during the academic terms. Material for the association newsletter must be submitted to Joonas JylhÀ (joonas.jylha@ayy.fi) by 10am on Wednesdays. The association newsletter can be read at /yhdistyksille/yhdistystiedote/. 3. Aalto Party, 1 Sept 2011

After the university’s official opening ceremony, the official after party Aalto Party will be arranged at Otaniemi Design Factory and its surroundings between 3.30pm-9pm! The afterparty is an open event to all Aalto members and there is bus transportation from Töölö and Arabia campuses to Aalto Party. Please note that in order to confirm the amount of refreshments, you must register through the link below no later than 29 Aug.

4. Aalto University is looking for a project worker for SELL 2012 project

Aalto University and Aalto University Sports Club are looking for a project worker for the implementation of an event production handbook and sustainable campus at Aalto University.

The aim of the project is to create the event production handbook for Aalto. The handbook is created in connection with the implementation of SELL Student Games 2012. Based on the experiences received from the project, guidelines are produced for Aalto events taking into account the objectives of sustainable development. SELL Student Games 2012 will be organised on Otaniemi Campus in Espoo on 17–20 May 2012. The project worker can also work on one’s Master’s thesis alongside the project.

Free-form applications, CV and the transcript of studies should be submitted to Meri Löyttyniemi by (meri.loyttyniemi@aalto.fi) 4 Sept 2011. The job starts according to agreement and will last until 22 June 2012. The employee is paid the total sum of 12,000 euro (6 months à 2,000 euro, full-time work divided into approx. 10 months). Due to the part-time nature of the project, it is possible to study alongside the work. The workspace will be located on Aalto Otaniemi Campus in connection with the SELL Games office.

5. Welcome to Unisport Otaniemi and Töölö

The common sports services of the University of Helsinki and Aalto University will finally open in Töölö and Otaniemi! Now you can enjoy the joy of exercising in the most convenient way for you!

Otahalli

Gyms and customer service will open on 22 Aug. Group exercise classes and ball games will start on 1 Sept.

Töölö

Group exercise classes and gym facilities at the School of Economics in Töölö will open on 1 Sept. At first when the customer service point is under renovation there are temporary entrances to the facilities. The customer service point in Töölö will open in October. Until that date, you can buy the season card/other services from the other sports centres of UniSport, such as Meilahti or city centre (new customers) or online at www.unisport.fi (old customers of University Sports Services). You can try out group exercise classes and gym facilities for free during September.

6. Looking for floorball players

One of AYY’s floorball clubs, YlĂ€mummo, is looking for floorball enthusiasts for the fifth division season which will begin soon. Our training hour is open to all AYY members and it takes place in Meilahti Sports Centre on Mondays at 9pm-10pm.

If you like to play and have a fair attitude towards floorball, feel free to come alone or with a friend to play in our rehearsals! Further information from mikko.matero (at) aalto.fi .

7. Participate in Aalto City Seminar on 12 Sept 2011

Kino Tapiola, 12 Sept, 1pm-6pm

In June 2011, Aalto University’s management decided to locate most of its operations in Otaniemi, Espoo. In this seminar arranged by Espoo’s cultural section and Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK), we discuss Aalto’s campus vision and outline Otaniemi’s connections to the other centres in T3 area (Tapiola, Keilaniemi).

Debaters include, among others, Aalto University’s President Tuula Teeri, Espoo’s Mayor Jukka MĂ€kelĂ€, Chair of the Aalto University Student Union Saara Hyrkkö and Professor Jarmo Suominen. The chairperson of the seminar is Cultural Director Georg Dolivo. All seminar lectures are in Finnish.

The seminar is part of Aalto University’s World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme. The event is free and open to everyone.

8. Welcome to dance courses of HOT-Dance (HÀmÀlÀis-Osakunta dance club)!

HOT-Dance is the active dance club of HÀmÀlÀis-Osakunta, which is intended for students.

Courses in the autumn of 2011 (weeks 36/37-50)

  • Basics: Wed, 14 Sept onwards, 5pm-7pm (Julia and Tomi)
  • Beginners: Wed, 7 Sept onwards, 7pm-9pm (Minna and Petteri)
  • Intermediate: Thu, 8 Sept onwards, 5pm–7pm (Henna and Mikko)
  • Advanced: Thus, 8 Sept onwards, 7pm–9pm (Kimmo)

Course prices for the members of HÀmÀlÀis-Osakunta:

Basics: 5 euro/term or all courses: 15 euro/term

Prices for other students:

Basics: 25 euro/term or all courses: 40 euro/term

The courses do not require advance registration or your own pair. You will need comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for indoors. Hot-Dance clubs can be found at Urho Kekkosen katu 4-6, courtyard, 4th floor, Punainen Mylly.

9. Apply for volunteer work in Asia, Africa or Latin America

Through Finnish Volunteer Programme Etvo, 20–30 volunteers can work in fields such as environment protection, human rights or village development. Etvo volunteer also has a unique opportunity to explore the everyday life of the developing countries.

Etvo is directed to those who are at least 22 years old and interested in volunteer work in developing countries. Voluntary positions are available in the local cooperation organisations of Finnish organisations.

Tasks range from environmental education to defending children’s rights and from English teaching to reporting on the life in refugee-inhabited areas. Common to all positions is that each volunteer can explore the life in the developing countries and the operations of the organisations at the grassroots level. The duration of self-financed volunteer work varies from six months to a year depending on the needs of the host organisation and the applicant’s wishes.

Come and get to know organisations, hear about volunteers’ experiences in a panel discussion and ask more questions! Finnish Volunteer Programme Etvo, International Voluntary Service (KVT), ICYE Finland and Allianssi Youth Exchange present their operations.

Golf tickets available at a discount!

Hey you golfing member!

Starting from tomorrow morning we offer tickets in Otaniemi service desk to Kurk Golf (total 30 pcs) and Espoo Ringside Golf (total 20 pcs) entitling to a full golf round for 20 € a ticket. Normal price for Kurk Golf is 45/65 € and for Ringside Golf 48/58 € depending on the time.

In Töölö, the same ticket will be offered in quantities of 10 to Kurk and 10 to Ringside from noon onwards.

Aalto-kymppi 2011 – 10 km running race for Aalto students and staff

Aalto-kymppi on Saturday 24th of September 2011

Aalto-kymppi, the kick-off event of the Aalto University academic year in terms of sports, will be organized on 24 September 2011. The event will start at the Otahalli sports hall. The event, starting at 3.00 p.m, is intended for anyone who wishes to take part in the 10-kilometre race in any way they seem fit: walking, jogging, running, forwards, backwards, or any other way. If you wish, you may also stop to admire the incredibly beautiful scenery along the route or enjoy the music of the band RetuperÀn WBK, also playing along the route.

The course runs along the Espoo Waterfront Walkway from Keilaniemi to Otsolahti, and under KehÀ I back to the Walkway in Otaniemi. The race finishes in the Otaniemi sports field.

Before the race, there will be a joint warmup session for all participants, and a prize will be awarded to the Aalto Athlete of the Year.

All participants from Aalto are granted a free technical sports shirt with Aalto and Rantamaraton logos.

Aalto University will pay the Aalto-kymppi participation fee for all its students and staff.

Registration for Espoo Rantamarathon (Sun 25.9.2011)

For marathon and half marathon organized the next day, Sunday 25.9.2011, all Aalto personnel and students are entitled to special price (marathon €40 and 1/2-marathon €35).

And for the first 40 persons of Aalto University registering for the marathon or half marathon it will be free of charge. Please email to martti.kyykoski@aalto.fi by 15.9.2011.

UniSport is coming to Otaniemi and Töölö!

The joint sports services of the University of Helsinki and Aalto University are now getting underway at the Töölö and Otaniemi campuses. Now you can experience great fitness and sports activities in a way that ideally suits you!

The gyms and customer service open on 22 August. Group training and ball sports begin on 1 September.

We offer nearly 50 hours a week of group training classes in yoga, stretching, neck and back exercises, indoor cycling, BODYPUMPÂź, functional training, zumba and more.

Töölö

Group training and gym services begin on 1 September at Aalto School of Economics.

Access to the facilities will be detoured at the start due to renovation of the customer service area.

The Töölö customer service point will open in October. Until then, you can purchase a Sports Fee card and order other services at a number of other UniSport centres, e.g. the one in Meilahti or the City Centre. Those with existing University Sports accounts can also order online at www.unisport.fi. Introductions to the gym and group training classes are offered for free during the month of September.

How do I start?

Visit a customer service point at one of our sport facilities to become a registered UniSport client. After presenting to Customer Service proof of your University student or employee status, you can book and pay for services online at the student/staff discount rates for your own client group. You can also book services at a customer service point or by calling 09-191-22151.

What does it cost?

The Sports Fee card rates as of 1 September for University community members are as follows:

6 months       €59
3 months       €41
1 month         €25

Per-visit fee  €3.50

What does the Sports Fee card include?

The Sports Fee card grants you access to the gym as often as you like.  You can also participate in group training classes as well as general or coached sessions of ball sports. The Sports Fee card can be used at all six campuses.
