AYY’s third Representative Council elections will culminate on the actual voting dates on Tue, 5 Nov and Wed, 6 Nov 2013. The posters of electoral alliances are on display in the lobby of Otakaari 1 and the lobby of SĂ€hkötalo (Otakaari 7) in Otaniemi, at Rafla in Töölö and the main entrance of Arabia. Posters are also on display on Mikkeli and Pori campuses. Candidate lists are also available at ayy.fi/vaalit.

Entitled to vote are all AYY’s members who have paid the Student Union’s membership fee by Friday, 11 Oct 2013.

Voting takes place through the electronic voting system. The electoral system can be found at: http://vaalit.ayy.fi. Preliminary election results will be published on Wednesday, 6 Nov. You can wait for the results in AYY’s and KY’s election night party at YlĂ€kertsi in KY Building (Pohjoinen rautatiekatu 21b) from 7pm onwards. The event on facebook.

Please vote and have influence!

3. Central office at Otakaari is named – Keto is the home of AYY members!

The central office will move from LĂ€mpömiehenkuja to Otakaari 11 during October and November. Currently, the central office at LĂ€mpömiehenkuja is called LĂ€mppĂ€ri and Otakaari Service Point is called Otaniemi Service Point. Along with the removal, we wanted a new name for the entire facilities at Otakaari. The best suggestion was Lauri Lavanti’s proposal Keto. The abbreviation of the central office (keskustoimisto) is dry and concise enough, but you can still make jokes about it.

The new name is used in the design of visual looks and communications.

4. AYY’s administrative regulation for the halls of residence was revised

AYY’s administrative regulation for the halls of residence was revised in cooperation with resident operators. Preparatory work that began in June was completed on 10 Oct 2013 when the Student Union’s Representative Council approved the new regulation for the halls of residence.

5. Pricing of summer weekends for Servin mökki has changed

AYY Board decided at its meeting 42/2013 to change the pricing of Servin mökki (Smökki), so that the summer weekends (Fri-Sun) between 1 June-31 Aug will be rented with the following prices in the future:

AYY members €900 / day, non-members €1,200 / day. The prices of other additional costs, such as the kitchen rent and the night use remain the same as before.

Associations in AYY’s association register will no longer have the right to make advance reservations for the summer weekends and the weekends for the following summer can be booked by anyone annually from 1 Sept onwards.

For further information, please contact Vice Chairperson of the Board Jori JÀmsÀ (jori.jamsa@ayy.fi or 050 520 9426) or Administrative Director Johanna PietilÀinen (johanna.pietilainen@ayy.fi or 050 520 9434).

7. AYY’s and KY’s Representative Council election night party at KY Building at 7pm on Wed, 6 Nov

AYY and KY invite everyone to wait for the results of the Representative Council elections! The traditional election night party is organised at YlÀkertsi at KY Building at 7pm on Wednesday, 6 Nov. There is double the amount of excitement when the Representative Council election results of both AYY and KY will be published in the same event. We provide snacks and drinks, music and way too much political analysis.

Whether you dress in a jacket, designer glasses or your guild hoodie, you are cordially welcome. After the results, you can continue to Circus where Polin appro is already in full swing.

Event on facebook.

8. Thousands of students have created Citizen’s accounts – should you do, too?

Since September, the FSHS has been using Citizen’s accounts in contacts between students and the FSHS.

More than 10,000 students have already started using Citizen’s accounts. The FSHS invites you to create a personal Citizen’s account online at www.asiointitili.fi

4. Junk bikes in Teekkari Village are collected on Fri, 1 Nov 2013

Dear residents of Teekkari Village,

this autumn we will carry out junk bike collection, which covers the entire Teekkari Village. All bikes (also the bikes in bike storage and bike sheds) are marked with pink paper bands with the text: ”I will go to the bin on 1 Nov 2013”. All bikes, which still have the paper band on 1 Nov, will be collected so please remove the paper band from your bike immediately. Official releases concerning the matter have been delivered to the notice boards/stairwell doors of all AYY buildings.

The aim is to collect unused junk bikes lying around from blemishing our beautiful living environment and taking space from bike racks. On 1 Nov, bikes with the paper band on will be collected to containers that are located in Otaniemi. After collection, bikes are restored for another three (3) months, in case that someone’s bike is among junk bikes by mistake. All collected bikes are documented and photographed. In this way, also misplaced bikes among junk bikes can be found easily and given back to their owners. After three months, usable bikes will be recycled and the ones rated as useless will be destroyed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Village Senate: kylasenaatti@list.ayy.fi.

Kind regards, Village Senate ’13

5. Administrative manager is now responsible for AYY’s facility sector

AYY has reorganised duties in such a way that from now on Administrative Manager Johanna PietilÀinen is responsible for the organising of all facility issues. Both of these facilities are free of charge.

7. Apply for the board of the Fund for Promoting Teekkari Activities

The Fund for Promoting Teekkari Activities (TTE-Fund) operates within Aalto University Student Union. The purpose of the fund is to grant scholarships in order to promote the aspirations of AYY and its members and associations, awake and maintain interest in technical, scientific, economic and social issues, as well as cultural activities.

The board of the fund consists of four members appointed by AYY and three members appointed by the Guild of the Round Tower. The board members are elected for two years at a time and the chair is elected from among the persons appointed to the board by AYY. The board is appointed by the Representative Council of the Student Union. The board is responsible for the granting of scholarships based on applications, while managing the fund’s assets is the duty of AYY Board. The board offers its members a unique vantage point to student activities, as the fund’s opportunity to allocate grants is very significant on AYY’s scale.

Based on the resignation section, two positions in the board of the fund will become vacant at the end of the year, and we are looking for smart and versatile persons to fill these positions. Please fill out the application form by 4pm on 30 Oct 2013 and tell us why you should be appointed to the board. 2. Bachelor of the spring of 2013 – please respond to the Bachelor’s feedback survey!

All Aalto University students who have completed their Bachelor’s degree in the spring of 2013 have received an e-mail request to respond to the feedback survey in the message. AYY and Aalto University wish that everyone who has received the survey will respond to it. If you have graduated as a bachelor last spring, you are included and have time to participate between this Monday, 30 Sept and 18 Oct.

In addition to course feedback, this feedback from Bachelors is a way to tell the University how it has succeeded in its teaching responsibility. The same survey is conducted in all other universities. From the year 2015 onwards, the Ministry of Education and Culture (OKM) will also allocate EUR 50 million for universities from their core funding based on students’ satisfaction. This satisfaction is measured with this survey. One section of the survey also provides counter feedback, when the respondent can directly see how his/her answers are placed in relation to students who have previously responded to the survey. YOPALA project of the Ministry of Education and Culture is responsible for the feedback survey, which is implemented by the German CHE Consult GmbH specialising in higher education.

The survey was conducted for the first time in the spring of 2013. Based on the results, Aalto University’s bachelors appreciate exchange studies more than the average student and consider international experience very important in terms of their future career. Students at Aalto University also work more during their studies than the average student and the work is more often related to the student’s own field. The entrance to the housing office and cashier upstairs will temporarily change when the lobby is under renovation. During the renovation, you can enter the housing office through the white door right next to the regular entrance. After the renovation, the entrance is through the glass doors as usual. The opening hours of cashier services will change during the renovation of Otakaari Service Point. In the future, AYY’s Otaniemi Service Point cashier services will be available on weekdays between 12noon-4pm. Opening hours will be similar to the opening hours of the housing office.

3. District court hearing of property dispute between AYY and KY Foundation to begin in February 2014

The preliminary hearing of the property dispute between AYY and KY Foundation began in the district court on Monday, 7 Oct 2013. The preliminary hearing decided that the main hearing will take place in February 2014.

The property dispute between AYY and KY Foundation began in 2010, when the student unions of the School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design merged into Aalto University Student Union. In connection with the merger, it became clear that the Student Union of the School of Economics transferred over EUR 42 million of its property to KY Foundation it had established out of reach of the new student union.

”The dispute is clarified in the district court, because the funds transferred to the foundation by KY should be controlled by the changing Aalto community and students themselves. It is possible to build Aalto community to a sustainable, stable and solid ground only if the construction begins with a clean slate, and now we are cleaning this slate”, says Chair of AYY Board Piia Kuosmanen.

Further information on the property dispute is available at ayy.fi/omaisuuskiista (unfortunately at the moment mainly in Finnish. Translation coming later) and facebook.com/omaisuuskiista

4. Bachelor of the spring of 2013 – respond to the bachelor feedback survey!

In addition, the respondents wished for more feedback from teachers.

A summary of the findings will be published at www.aaltonet.fi later in the autumn. What we want to see is an area that invites interaction with users and is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. That is why we want to hear from the people who actually use this area,” explains Aalto University Properties CEO Kari Kontturi.

The survey will be carried out by Mapita Oy, whose map-based service is used to collect the survey data. All responses will treated as confidential and respondents’ personal details will remain separate from their responses at all times.
