8. AYY – Workshop on teaching in multicultural groups, come share your views! (11.11.2014)

How does teaching in multicultural groups work? Join AYY’s workshop and discuss with Aalto teachers what could be improved!

Aalto University is a community of almost 100 nationalities. Different cultures have different understandings of authority, of directness of speech, of the concept of a good student, of the role of the teacher, just to name a few. How could we make sure that the teaching situations acknowledge the fact that the groups are multicultural? How does cultural background affect the learning experience and understanding of the subtle non-verbal communication? How could we create an atmosphere in the class that would support openness and learning from other cultures? How could we make multicultural group works increase cooperation and understanding across cultures? How could we increase integration of international and Finnish students in teaching situations? AYY invites all interested members of the teaching staff to share their thoughts with international and Finnish students of Aalto University. In the workshop on developing multicultural teaching on 11 Nov 2014 from 4pm to 6pm at Open Innovation House (Otaniementie 19-21) students and teaching staff will discuss the problems they have experienced in multicultural teaching and think about possible solutions. Join the workshop to make sure the teachers understand your perspective to teaching! The workshop will function as a basis for AYY’s and Aalto University’s joint project on developing multicultural teaching in year 2015. Please sign up for the workshop by sending an e-mail to international@ayy.fi by 3 November. Refreshments and snacks will be provided, please inform us of your allergies and dietary restrictions when signing up. Welcome! /en/blog/events/ayy-workshop-on-teaching-in-multicultural-groups-come-share-your-views/

Public transport fares to rise

HSL 21.10.2014 (Read release on HSL’s webpage)

HSL fares will rise on average by 3.8 percent at the beginning of next year. The price increases are due to significant public transport investments in the region. Season and value ticket prices will increase the most.

The price of city internal season tickets will rise by three euros to €49.50 (30 days). The price of a corresponding regional ticket will go up by slightly under three euros to €98.60. The main reason for the price increases are the public transport investments underway.

“The Ring Rail Line to open next year, new Sm5 trains and new trunk route 560 to start operating in autumn 2015 will increase the public transport operating costs by some €11.6 million in 2015 and this is reflected in the ticket prices. Of course, also services will improve significantly,” says HSL Executive Director Suvi Rihtniemi.

The Ring Rail Line, automation of the Metro and the West Metro will increase HSL’s infrastructure costs also in the future. The infrastructure costs will increase in total by €64.3 million to €130 million between 2014 and 2017 so there will be pressure to increase fares also in the coming years. Half of the costs of public transport investments in the HSL area are paid by the municipality where the investment is made. The other half is paid by HSL. One fourth of the investments are funded by HSL ticket revenue, one fourth by direct infrastructure subsidies from the municipalities.

Price difference between internal and regional tickets to decrease

The prices of internal tickets will increase relatively more than those of regional tickets next year. HSL wants to decrease the price difference between internal and regional tickets as the introduction of the new zone system approaches. In the new system, the fares will no longer be determined by municipal boundaries. At the moment, internal season tickets are the most subsidized tickets. For example, the municipal subsidy for Helsinki internal season tickets is 63 percent in 2015. The real cost of the ticket is €134 while the customers pay €49.50.

The single fares will mainly remain unchanged. However, the price of a three-zone adult single ticket will rise by 50 cent to €7.50 and the child fare by 30 cents to €3.80. Also the regional night fare will rise from €6 to €7. The prices of day tickets will not change.

HSL proposes an increase for the penalty fare from €80 to €100. The amount of the penalty fare is fixed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The fare has remained unchanged since 2007.

8. Mindfulness workshop, anxiety theme

There are still a few seats left to the workshop beginning on Friday, 31 Oct!

In mindfulness, it is essential to approvingly detect and identify your own thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. Often our own requirements and critical attitude make us nervous when performing or in other social situations. Mindfulness training helps you to observe and accept your own thoughts, feelings and physical reactions, which often reduces anxiety.

The workshop is held on Fridays, 31 Oct-5 Dec, 1pm-3pm at Otakaari 1, classroom Majakka (M140). Further information. This workshop will be held in Finnish.

9. Respond to the campus environment survey and win a Jopo bicycle or iPad!

The company is responsible for leasing the real estate properties, their management and care, and for the associated support functions and the further development of the properties. The company works in close collaboration with the University’s Campus and Facility Services. An important factor guiding our operations is feedback from the users. We have e.g. developed our communication, improved outdoor areas and developed bicycling and walking routes on the campus.

Through the annual survey we are collecting feedback from University’s personnel and students about how to develop campuses further. Provide your feedback and win a Jopo-bicycle or iPad!

13. Your (anonymous) story for a sex-themed documentary?

Why do drunken sex stories turn into admired hero myths? Special Film Company will make a short documentary film, which films sex stories, taking artistic liberties and adapting the stories to the form of the poem. The stories may be true, common experiences or dreams. The purpose is to research the human feeling of loneliness. People generally wish others well, but desire and a subjective perception may cause them not to consider the consequences of their actions, which may upset other people. Perhaps.
Special film Company is looking for interviewees in their twenties or thirties, who would be interested in sharing their own experiences. Stories are read by an actor and they do not have to be identifiable. Please write to us if you want to participate in the project. We will conduct the interviews in November. The film is produced by Special Film Company and the director is Vesa Kuosmanen. The premiere will take place at the end of 2015.

The production assistent is Tiina Vanhanen who provides further information:  tiina@vanhanen.fi. You can also directly contact Director Vesa Kuosmanen who will conduct the interviews: vesa@specialfilmcompany.fi
