2. Aalto strategy @AYY: Afterwork on 19 Mar

Aalto’s strategy work is ongoing. Last week, we had the great Telegram discussion on the Universty’s strategy, and this week, we will gather at a strategy-themed Afterwork. What would Aalto’s new strategy need to be like to make the student life here the best in the world? Which goals or development needs do you think should be focused on in the coming years?

The Afterwork is held at the AYY Office’s meeting room Reiluus (Otakaari 11). There will be some drinks and snacks on offer. Please sign up in advance so that we can ensure enough refreshments for all:
https://lomake.ayy.fi/vaikuttaminen/aalto-strategy-ayy-afterwork.

3. Parliamentary election panel 26th March at 16: Lifelong learning 2.0

Without knowhow there is no welfare, research or economic growth. How can people ensure they get work experience in their own field while still studying? And how can we guarantee that people’s skills will remain relevant during a career lasting several decades?

Aalto University and the Aalto University Student Union are organizing a parliamentary election panel, at the centre of which, will be combining work and studies, and lifelong learning.

Speakers:

  • Saara Hyrkkö, The Greens
  • Henrik Vuornos, National Coalition Party
  • Joona RĂ€sĂ€nen, SDP
  • Tiina Ahva, Blue Reform
  • Simo Grönroos, The Finns Party

4. Futuretalks movie night: Vice

In honour of the upcoming parliamentary election (14 Apr), AYY is offering its members a chance to see the societal comedy film Vice (2018). Vice is about the life and career of former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney, as well as about the consequences of the concentration of power in Cabinets instead of the people.

Could the same happen in Finland as well?

Before the film screening, one of the makers of the Politbyroo podcast, the quick-witted Sini Korpinen and Juha TöyrylÀ present an introduction to the topic.

The film is screened at TOKYO ry’s Kino Sheryl cinema. The cinema is accessible. The discussion will be held in Finnish.

There are 80 tickets available to the screening. Binding sign-up via the link below:

5. Climate change – Finland on the global arena: workshop on 28 Mar

Have you seen the hashtag #NytOnPakko all over social media? Have you been wondering which climate goals Finland has set? You now have a chance to collectively discuss climate change, hear about the IPCC report, see how Finland is doing globally on the climate arena, assess the climate goals of different political parties and think about how you could participate in the climate work.

These topics will be discussed together in a 1.5-hour workshop in VĂ€re, room F101 (main entrance, right of the doors), on 28 Mar at 4.30–6.00 pm. Everyone from climate specialists and activists to critical thinkers and average Joes is welcome.

The workshop will start with a keynote from Hanna Aho, a climate specialist from Fingo and member of the #Korvaamaton campaign’s steering group. The workshop itself will be facilitated by Emma Sairanen, a campaign volunteer and master’s-level student of Aalto University. Emma was inspired to organise the workshop when she attended the Power Shift event, where inspiring talks from specialists motivated young people to share the information they received.

The workshop is organised in Finnish – if you wish to participate in another language, please contact AYY. The location is accessible.

6. Nominate prize winners from the Aalto community

Like last year, Aalto University Student Union’s Community Committee Aava rewards associations for their work in the Aalto community. However, this year, we are collecting nominations for the whole year, so that feats done early in the year don’t get overshadowed by the time that has passed. Nominate associations and other groups that have succeeded this year in the following categories: Promoting student wellbeing, welcoming new students, integrating international students and bringing students from different study fields together. Additionally, you can give a nomination for your own category!

WELLBEING

14. FSHS day on your campus on Wednesday 20 Mar

The majority of us know how we are supposed to eat healthily. According to the Finnish Student Health Survey (KOTT 2016), a health-promoting diet is a reality for only 40% of students at the moment. Nutrition affects your study ability, coping and mood. Do you need support for following a healthy diet? Are you all confused among the wilderness of various dietary choices and requirements? Are you craving for more information on healthy nutrition?

On FSHS day on Wednesday 20 Mar, FSHS lands on university campuses around Finland and wants to support you in terms of healthy nutrition. Come along to pick up tips on the effects of nutrition on wellbeing and study ability on FSHS day. FSHS will also be offering free morning porridge on the university campuses. The porridge is served in restaurant Alvari (Otakaari 1) at 8–9 am. Bring your student ID. FSHS stand in front of the restaurant in the main lobby of the Undergraduate Centre at 8–11 am. See you at breakfast!

AYY ANNOUNCES

1. What is the Aalto University of your dreams like? Aalto Strategy @AYY

Strategy work is ongoing at Aalto, and the entire Aalto community is invited to join the influencing! In March, AYY is organising two strategy events aimed especially at students:

AYY’s priority in the strategy work is students’ wellbeing and experience, and both events will focus especially on questions related to these. It is us students who are best aware of students’ everyday life, wellbeing and experience, so come along to share your thoughts and ideas!

You can take a look at the materials on the Aalto strategy at www.aalto.fi/3.0 (requires logging in with Aalto user details).

2. Application period extended: Apply to the Student Union’s Central Election Committee for 2019!

AYY’s highest decision-making body, the 45-member Representative Council, will be elected again next autumn. However, the Council election does not organise itself, so we are in need of volunteers.

Would you like to be involved with making AYY’s next Council election more visible, resonating and participatory than ever?

The call for applications to the Central Election Committee operating at the heart of the Council election is open! For example, the Central Election Committee decides upon the polling and advance polling stations’ locations, establishes the Election Committees, reviews the candidacy notices and agreements on electoral alliances and groups, conducts the recount of the votes and oversees the election proceedings in general. A member of the Central Election Committee is not eligible to stand in the Representative Council election 2019.

Applications to the Central Election Committee are submitted via the electronic form at https://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/kvl.

The application period has been extended until Sunday 17 Mar 2019 at 11.59 pm.

Further information: Administrative and HR Manager Johanna PietilÀinen (johanna.pietilainen (a) ayy.fi), +358 50 520 9434.

3. Answer the brand survey for AYY’s sections

The AYY sections are charting the images held by our community of the sections’ brands. If you want to take part in influencing the sections’ brand development work, let your thoughts be known via the attached survey form. Your answers carry particular weight, as they will help further improve the sections’ brands. The questionnaire closes Sunday 24th of March.

Among all respondents, we will raffle VIP and drinks tickets for the Dipoli Wappu or Aalto Afterparty.

You can access the survey here:

FI: http://bit.ly/Jbrandikysely

SV: http://bit.ly/Sbrandforfragan

EN: http://bit.ly/Sbrandquestionnaire

4. AYY is looking for a designer and maker for the Master of Ceremonies’ staff

The Master of Ceremonies’ staff is used at the annual balls and possibly at other ceremonious events of associations or, in the case of AYY, the Student Union. The Master of Ceremonies’ staff is usually around two metres long and has a logo, emblem or other symbol representing the association at its head. The staff usually has a base, which can be either decorative or simple. AYY wants a staff that represents our community. This being the case, we are looking for a designer and maker for our staff! This staff will be used by our Student Union most likely for decades to come at all more ceremonious events, and it will act as an important and valuable symbol of AYY. A reward will be settled upon with the maker.

Submit your design by 24 Mar and leave your handprint in AYY’s history. Read more at /en/blog/2019/02/28/ayy-is-looking-for-a-designer-and-maker-for-the-master-of-ceremonies-staff/.

All questions and requests for further information will be answered by Marianne Honkasaari (marianne.honkasaari@ayy.fi, 0409645608).

5. AYY takes part in Ilmastoveivi – Sign the petition and accept the Guild of Architecture’ veggie week challenge

Finland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2019 from July to December. The goal of the Ilmastoveivi2019 campaign is for Finland, with the support of its people, to make use of the opportunities of its EU presidency period and to firmly promote limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. In order to achieve this goal, Ilmastoveivi2019 is looking to collect 500,000 signatures for our petition, which will be handed over to the new Prime Minister of Finland in the spring of 2019.

Read more and sign the petition: https://www.ilmastoveivi2019.fi.

P.S. Also accept the Guild of Architecture’s Ilmastoveivi challenge encouraging you to eat vegetarian food for (at least) this week: /blog/events/ilmastoveivihaaste-vegeviikko-11 (in Finnish).

6. JĂ€merĂ€ntaival 3 B will complete its renovations in May 2019 – application for the apartments open on 11–24 Mar 2019!

The renovations at JÀmerÀntaival 3 B are soon completed, and the apartments will be ready for moving in on 2 May 2019. The majority of the completed apartments are single rooms in shared apartments. During the renovations, all surface materials and fixed furnishings in the apartments have been renewed. All AYY members with a right of residence can apply for the apartments. The apartments are applied for in the Domo system, and applications received between 11 Mar and 24 Mar 2019 will be included in the lottery. The apartments will be offered from 25 Mar 2019 onwards. Once all apartments have been offered, the lottery order is dissolved and the applications are placed in a queue based on their scoring and submission date.

3. AYY is looking for a designer and maker for the Master of Ceremonies’ staff

The Master of Ceremonies’ staff is used at the annual balls and possibly at other ceremonious events of associations or, in the case of AYY, the Student Union. At the festivities, the Master of Ceremonies thumps the ground to get the party crowd’s attention, for example, before a speech. The Master of Ceremonies’ staff is usually around two metres long and has a logo, emblem or other symbol representing the association at its head. The staff usually has a base, which can be either decorative or simple.

With the AYY annual ball approaching once again, the need for a Master of Ceremonies’ staff becomes very real as well. AYY wants a staff that represents our community. This being the case, we are looking for a designer and maker for our staff! This staff will be used by out Student Union most likely for decades to come at all more ceremonious events, and it will act as an important and valuable symbol of AYY. A reward will be settled upon with the maker.

Leave your handprint in AYY’s history and submit your design by 24 Mar. Read more. /en/blog/2019/02/28/ayy-is-looking-for-a-designer-and-maker-for-the-master-of-ceremonies-staff/

All questions and requests for further information will be answered by Marianne Honkasaari (marianne.honkasaari@ayy.fi, 0409645608).

WORKING LIFE

7. Not just firewalls in the boiler room – Data protection, the enabler of digitalising trade

“The data protection people always hit the brakes when you are supposed to go into manufacture!” As a decision-maker in business, is this something you have come across? This is the image many people have of data protection, but it is not the right one.

It is known for a fact that reconciling business with data protection in all areas of operations and organisation requires work. Spending the budget on firewalls for the boiler room is not enough. These days, data protection penetrates the entire organisation – and enables the organisation to utilise the potential offered by digitalisation.

In the Tieto Talks seminar, beginning at 8.30 am on 12 Mar 2019, Tieto offers an up-to-date and tangible information package on what modern data protection encompasses, what it requires and how it should be managed in order to utilise the full potential of digitalisation. Register for the event at https://www.tieto.com/fi/events/2019/tieto-talks-security.

The event is Finnish-language.

11. Climate strike in Otaniemi on 15 Mar

Join us in protesting for the climate in Otaniemi at the climate strike taking place on 15 Mar and 5 Apr! Thousands of young people around the world are skipping school to go on strike for better climate decisions. For why should we study and graduate, if the future of our entire generation is in danger?

https://www.facebook.com/events/1155497034617449/

12. Engineers vs. climate change – is the know-how enough?

Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees requires huge measures from everyone, and not least from those with higher education in the field of technology. Climate change creates new demands for employees, society and the industrial life alike. What kind of know-how does this change require? How has education already reacted and will react to this in the future?

Come along to discuss the topic with the Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland (TEK) and the universities in the technology field at the Future-Proof Engineering Education 2019 event on Friday 15 Mar at 9 am–3 pm at the Design Factory!

Keynote speakers Mika Anttonen, Max Mickelsson and Mikko Dufva will be presenting their personal views on the topic. The results of the Graduate Survey 2018 by TEK and the universities of the technology field will be published at the event. The event can also be followed via a live stream. More information and registration at education.tek.fi.

On the Inshore Skipper course, we practice being in charge of a boat in inshore circumstances, and the course is suitable e.g. for crew members who have sailed for 1–2 seasons.

The theory day related to the courses is held on Sunday 14 Apr, so you should write that date down in your calendar. More information on the sailing courses and the registration form are available at https://trip.ayy.fi/wordpress/?page_id=231.

AYY ANNOUNCES

1. Save the Date: Futuretalks parliamentary election panel – Lifelong learning 2.0

WHERE: Harald Herlin, Makerspace

WHEN: 26 Mar at 4–6 pm

Without know-how, there will be no wellbeing, research or economic growth. How can people be enabled to gain work experience in their own field while still studying? Or how can it be ensured that their know-how remains relevant through a decade-long working career?

Aalto University and Aalto University Student Union are organising a parliamentary election panel with a focal point on combining work and studying as well as lifelong learning. The event is Finnish-language.

2. Apply to the Student Union’s Central Election Committee for 2019!

AYY’s highest decision-making body, the 45-member Representative Council, will be elected again next autumn. However, the Council election does not organise itself, so we are in need of volunteers.

Would you like to be involved with making AYY’s next Council election more visible, resonating and participatory than ever?

The call for applications to the Central Election Committee operating at the heart of the Council election has now been opened.

Applications to the Central Election Committee are submitted via the electronic form at https://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/kvl/.

The application period runs until 3 Mar 2019 at 11.59 pm.

Further information: Administrative and HR Manager Johanna PietilÀinen (johanna.pietilainen (a) ayy.fi), +358 50 520 9434.

3. Brainstorming workshop: 30 000 euros towards Teekkaris

Come brainstorm about what the scholarship donated towards promoting the Teekkari culture by the Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland (TEK) could be used on. The event begins with a concise presentation of the student survey’s results and the current status of the Teekkari culture and guild operations. All Teekkari students, acting volunteers in the guilds or at AYY as well as everyone interested in Teekkaris is welcome to join us for coming up with what to spend the money on. The best ideas will reach a lot of people and live on for years to come.

The brainstorming workshop takes place on Tue 26 Feb at 3–5 pm in the Undergraduate Centre, in room Y115, which is located to the left of the doors when arriving from Alvari Square. The presentations are held in Finnish, but everyone is welcome to brainstorm in their own language. The facility is accessible, and more information is available from lauri.jurvanen@ayy.fi.

Do you know a pioneer, unconventional bridge-builder or a cross-disciplinary hard worker in the Aalto community who deserves recognition? Suggest a recipient for the Aalto University Student Union acknowledgement reward for 2019.

You can make suggestions until March 10th. After the suggestion period is over, the acknowledgement working group will propose the final recipients of acknowledgements to AYY’s Board. The acknowledgements can be given to the student union’s current or former members and employees.

Read more about the acknowledgements and suggest a recipient via this link: https://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/bling/

If you’d like to take part in deciding who get the rewards, you can alsoapply for the acknowledgement working group.

The acknowledgment working group receives the proposals for the acknowledgment recipients, discusses the proposals and proposes a resolution on the final recipients to AYY’s Board.

AYY ANNOUNCES

1. Teekkari culture in a nutshell

Who are these lively creatures with their traditions?

The Polytechnical Students’ Museum was temporarily closed for renovations in December. The exhibition and stories were packed into a documentary about the tech student culture, by the combined efforts of OUBS and our very own Museum Section and guides.

Free viewings every Sunday at noon, in Kinopoli, Otakaari 20 A. Subtitles in English, seats for 18 people, no reservations. For any questions and more info, please contact museo@polyteekkarimuseo.fi.

2. AYY: Art, coffee and activity on Tue 26 Feb at 5 pm

What if an art piece portraying the Arabia chimney was created in Otaniemi? Could the metro station be utilised to display student artworks? Should the AYY t-shirts be completely redesigned? What could Otaniemi Night of Arts look like this year?

What kinds of activities do you think the Student Union should organise in the art field? Come around for a cup of coffee, to bounce around ideas and to discuss the subject. The best ideas may end up as realised projects, and participation is fully up to what you are interested in and have time for. All Aalto students are welcome at the event, which is held on Tuesday 26 Feb from 5 pm onwards in VĂ€re, in the Working CafĂ© opposite the Aalto University Shop between the building’s M and L blocks. Welcome!

3. Information on the Teekkari cap process

Following the establishment of Aalto University and the transfer of subjects, also other students than those of the technology field now participate in the Teekkari freshman education of Teknologföreningen and the Guild of Architecture. In October 2018, the Guild of Architecture and Teknologföreningen approached the AYY Board and the Teekkari Section with a letter expressing the wish to clarify the possibility of also other students than those of the technology field to receive a Teekkari cap.

The AYY Board made a statement on the topic in December 2018, and the cap concession process was prepared during January 2019. The Teekkari Section and the panel of the Guild of the Round Tower ry approved the process in the beginning of February 2019.

The process enables permission to wear the cap to be granted solely to freshmen who begun their Teekkari freshman education in autumn 2018 and whose degree does not lead to the title of Bachelor of Science (Technology), Master of Science (Technology), Architect or Landscape Architect.

The cap must be applied for separately, and both the Teekkari Section and the panel of the Guild of the Round Tower must approve the application in order for a cap to be granted.

This is a temporary operating model designed for use this spring only. Matters regarding the Teekkari cap will be readdressed once AYY’s community structures project is completed after the summer of 2019. The Teekkari Section has expressed the wish that there would be time to have the entire Teekkari community participate more actively in the readdressing.

The brainstorming workshop takes place on Tue 26 Feb at 3–5 pm in the Undergraduate Centre, room Y115. The presentations are held in Finnish, but everyone is welcome to brainstorm in their own language. The facility is accessible, and more information is available from lauri.jurvanen@ayy.fi.

CULTURE

6. Omstart! The 30th production of Teekkarispeksi has its premiere soon – get tickets before they sell out!

The Teekkarispeksi of 2019 – Keinolla MillĂ€ HyvĂ€nsĂ€ (“At Any Cost”) – takes the spectators to Prohibition-age New Orleans, where organised crime and the corrupt police force fight for power. In the midst of the Mardi Gras festival, a family business gets into trouble as a barber’s daughter gets mixed up with the police’s twisted exercise of power, while the voodoo doctor is scheming in the dark alleyways.

The premiere, which simultaneously acts as an anniversary performance, takes place on 19 Mar in the Peacock Theatre and the remaining Helsinki performances in the Alexander Theatre. Speksis are all-night musicals in which the hundred-strong creator crowd conjure up a one-of-a-kind show on stage that is altered every time with the audience’s omstart calls.

More information on the spring Speksi is available on our website and the FB event for the Helsinki performances. Tickets are available at liput.teekkarispeksi.fi.

You have to see this – at any cost.

12. Sports tutor recruitment for 2019

The task of a sports tutor is to encourage new students to take up exercise. Sports tutors do not need to be ISOs, tutors or top athletes – anyone can apply, regardless of the stage of their studies! The important thing is having an interest in sports and exercise and a desire to work with new students.

Next autumn, a new sports concept will be launched in which different sports associations organise weekly sessions in which people can try out the different disciplines, and the idea is for the sports tutors to act as support for this concept. They would aim to help the sports associations organise their try-outs and to bring new students into the sessions.

Benefits:

  • You get to organise versatile sporting activities for new students
  • A free 4-month UniSport membership
  • Another 4-month UniSport membership if you stay active throughout the autumn
  • A Sports Tutor badge for your overalls
  • An interdisciplinary tutoring group

In the group, you will have the opportunity to share your personal experiences and gain new points of view to support your wellbeing. You do not need more reason to join the group than your interest in going through the group’s topics. The group is Finnish-language and meets on six Wednesdays at 3–5 pm from 27 Mar to 8 May 2019. Participation requires you to commit to all meeting times and the tasks in between.

You can sign up for the group by sending your contact details by email to the FSHS nurse: elli.pekkola(at)yths.fi. After this, the nurse will interview the participants by phone, at which time you will also get more detailed information on the group.

AYY ANNOUNCES

1. AYY crowns Manta this spring – have your say!

This year, it is once again AYY’s turn to crown the Havis Amanda, and we want all Aalto people to help us come up with the best and most wonderful ideas!

Do you have an idea for how Manta’s student cap could be brought to the site? How can we celebrate the best student’s life in the world during the procession? How can this unique event be celebrated the Aalto way?

Send us your ideas now! In 2015, when AYY crowned Manta last, the community suggested using a drone to fly in the student cap, and this was brought to fruition!

https://lomake.ayy.fi/culture/manta2019-en/

Welcome!

3. Train as a Security Officer, AYY pays for the costs!

AYY is organising a Security Officer course in the beginning of March. The training is held on 1–3 Mar and 8–10 Mar 2019. The training is free of charge if you commit to working as a Security Officer in four (4) AYY events by the end of 2020. If there are spots left, you can also take part on the Security Officer refresher course on 9–10 Mar.

The course has 15 spots and is organised in Otaniemi.

Registration opens on 12 Feb at 12 noon and closes on 19 Feb at 11.59 pm or when the course is full.

The course will be held in Finnish.

WELLBEING

9. Climate change and me – Are you anxious?

The group meets five times during the spring on the Otaniemi campus. In a confidential atmosphere, we will discuss the future and the threat imagery and glimmers of hope it evokes, as well as think about the relationship of our anxiety to action. You will not find a ready-made solution to your anxiety about the climate and the environment, but you will find advice, support and tools.

The group will take a maximum of 15 students. We will interview the participants in advance (in week 10 at the latest) to chart your hopes and needs. Please note that the group is not a form of therapy, and it is not suitable to persons in acute crisis. Please commit to attending each session as best as possible. The group is not linked to any belief system. You are welcome as you are, regardless of your world view and points of view!

Sign-up and further information by Wed 20 Feb 2019 by email to psychologist Sanni at sanni.saarimaki@aalto.fi.

More information at https://into.aalto.fi/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=328008 (in Finnish).

10. Mindful Tools for Stress Management in English and Finnish

Feeling stressed or anxious? Come and get new ideas on how to boost your wellness. When facing difficulties, we often try not to notice them. Handling stress becomes easier when we approach difficulties rather avoid them and learn to recognise when we start to feel stressed or worried. With practice, it is possible to become less reactive and more free with our responses to the stressful situation.

The workshop is on Mondays at 2–4 pm from 25 Feb to 25 March, class room Majakka (M140), Otakaari 1. The workshop is held in English. More information at https://into.aalto.fi/display/enopisk/Courses+and+workshops+for+students.

The workshop in Finnish will be held on Mondays at 10 am–12 noon from 25 Feb to 1 Apr. More information at https://into.aalto.fi/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=328008.
