Aalto IT: Security bulletin

Scam and phishing campaign continues at high volume. Aalto It Service has produced two sets of instructions for users to help to battle against this menace. The first is a top-10 list of how to recognize a malicious email and the other is a advisory on how to send the samples to us for analysis.

The first has been published earlier (our email lecture and latest ITS newsletter) but have been a lot shorter. This new version is more self-explanatory. The other is an advisory based on the counterpart from Sophos (producer of our junk email filter) and advices how to send samples to us in a specific form so we can pass the on to Sophos if needed. Sophos says our filter is a learning one and if we send them samples, it will be more efficient even against messages written in exotic languages like (bad) Finnish. After sending a bit less than 200 samples we have seen first signs of this and would like to keep on feeding them in the future too.

English translations of these two will be published later. The work has started but we saw the need to publish Finnish versions as soon as possible. Find the instructions in Finnish here and here.

Several companies have released updates lately. Microsoft released a big and important June update bundle. Adobe updated Flash Player with critical patches and OpenSSL got fixed too – again with very important pathces. Please, keep your boxes updated as the summer holidays are about to start (or have started for some).

More information:

Aalto IT services also inform that the LastPass service reports it has been hacked. As far as we know this service is not widely used in Aalto but we would like to pass this warning just in case. If it has been used, a password change is more than recommended .

Welcome to Otaniemi: Reading material for the summer!

A calculator counting days to the removal of business bachelor students shows that there are only 90 AaltoParty2012_smallerdays left to the removal and the beginning of a new academic year.

Summer and summer holidays are ongoing – do you need something to read?! Don’t worry! AYY has compiled reading material for the summer. By reading this material, anyone can be an expert in Otaniemi matters at the beginning of the autumn. We recommend that you deepen your knowledge by participating in community events and activities throughout the academic year and your studies.

Basic level

By getting to know Otaniemi-Finnish dictionary, you can handle daily situations in Otaniemi and understand what people are talking about.

Comprehensive basic level

Are you familiar with the glossary? Deepen your knowledge by learning overalls presentations. If you want to go even deeper, also read what kind of strings  you can earn to decorate your overalls with.

Average level

You have learned the glossary by heart and can recognise students based on their overall colours. Next, it is time to get to know buildings, nature and stories in Otaniemi. Where is the most visible ”fifth facade”? Which building is located at the highest spot in Otaniemi? An excellent tool for this is KĂ€vellen kampuksella map. The map is available in English here.

Hifi level

Now you can handle the glossary, overalls and the environment, but still something is missing? Get prepared for the academic parties of the coming year by reading Tavoistaan teekkari tunnetaan custom guide (in Finnish).

Hifi level+

You can polish your Otaniemi awareness by reading the memoirs of Ota-Ossi, or more familiarly, Ossin LÀssyt. Ossi Törrönen was a long-term leader of Teekkari Village and he has written stories about Teekkari Village over the years. Read Ossin LÀssyt (in Finnish) here.

Congatulations! You are now familiar with Otaniemi and you don’t have to worry about the autumn. Or if you don’t have the time to read this package, don’t worry, you will certainly have all necessary information in the autumn. Have a great and sunny summer!

At the High 5 event at the end of February, Vice President Eero Eloranta proposed awards for members of the Aalto community to reward excellent work.

“We live to work, rather than working to live. There is a lot of talent at Aalto, and I believe that talent should be rewarded,”Eloranta said to justify stealing the microphone from the President during her opening speech.

According to Eloranta’s suggestion there will be six awards, and anyone within the Aalto community can nominate a member of staff or faculty, a student or a group for an award.

Each award is worth 1000 euros and a diploma. The winners will be announced at the opening of the academic year on 1 September 2015, together with the Aalto Act of the Year award. More information about the opening ceremony can be found here.

Nominate a member of the Aalto community and give us your reasons for nominating them by Friday 31st July by using this link.

The final result is an innovative internet service or webpage!

The All About Me competition winner’s proposal will be made use of in marketing the renewed citizen’s service view in the Suomi.fi service, for example by taking the winner’s work and trying it out in public places. The beta.suomi.fi trail version of the citizen’s service view will be launched at the end of 2015.

Competition entries must be submitted by 4pm on 31 August 2015 at the latest.
