10.                  The Students Sing! – recording the oral traditions of student song culture, March 15 – June 30, 2016

”Students sing and have sung throughout time almost anywhere: at matinees, dinner parties, demonstrations, in the sauna, at appros, on the road and in processions. Songs are an integral part of student culture. They are part of both ordinary and special days, expressing sometimes criticism, sometimes appreciation. Song traditions live in associations, but they also bring together looser communities. Singing is a way of expressing togetherness and passing on traditions.

What are your memories of student songs? Tell us your memories and experiences with student song culture. We are collecting the memories of both current and former students from the perspectives of both associations and individual students. We also want to record students’ own lyrics and stories related to them.

We hope to get submissions nationally irrespective of subject or university background. The collection is organized by the Finnish Literature Society, the Student Union of the University of Helsinki and HYYHY ry.

14.                  Education opposition – Discussion on education, culture and science

“The cuts, which are of a record-high level, to higher education, the mauling of the upper secondary level, the cuts on student financial aid, the restrictions set on study time and the new division of the funding of science. The cilviised discussion has an effect under the buried economic crisis and there are surprisingly many balls in the air at the same time.

2.    Cuts in student allowance! A student allowance demonstration in Helsinki on March 9 and pre-demonstration banner workshops on March 7-8

The Finnish government is planning significant cuts to student allowance. They intend to reduce the allowance by 70 million within three years and by 150 million in the long term. This amounts to about one quarter of the present level.

Before the elections, they promised not to make cuts in education. But they cut education anyway, and the resulting need for tightening budgets can now also be seen at Aalto. They specifically promised not to reduce student allowance, but now there are significant changes ahead.

This has to end. Student allowance is a student’s basic social security, not a tool for steering educational policy.

What to do, then? Let’s show that students are not going to take this sitting down. The  student allowance demonstration against education cuts will be organized in Helsinki on March 9, and AYY will be there as well. We need associations to join us, flags, banners, gadgets and enthusiastic spirits!

Come and show the decision-makers that this can’t go on anymore!

You can find the Facebook event at https://www.facebook.com/events/983431838405738/. Information will be updated as soon as it is available.

Rantasauna’s tub out of use

The tub in Rantasauna is currently out of use. The reason for this is the possibility that the terrace might collapse due to the fact that the soil under the terrace has shifted along with the drain waters. The repair work will start on Monday March 7 2016. The duration of the repairs is unfortunately not yet known.
