14.                  Mestariopiskelija – a free e-book on the optimization of studying

An engineer who was just about to graduate decided to employ his problem-solving skills and find out in detail how studying really works and how to make it more efficient. The result was a science-based book called Mestariopiskelija – tiedettä muistin ja opiskelun optimointiin (Master Student – Science for the Optimization of Memory and Studying).

Mestariopiskelija mixes entertaining popular science, serious studies and grassroots-level tips on how to make the psychology of learning a part of everyday studying. The book is written by Tommi Valkonen, student of industrial engineering and management, and the graphical look was designed by Joonas Heloterä.

The book is a hobby project and a sort of a life challenge rather than a way of making money. That is why the book is available for free download in PDF format at www.tommivalkonen.com. The English version of Mestariopiskelija will be published in the late summer / early autumn of 2016.

On the Friday of the Annual Ball week of the AYY, 13.5, from 3 pm to 6 pm the Otaranta park area will burst into its full splendour when the students of the Student Union gather on the seashore lawn to salute the traditional day of celebration of students and the birthday of the Teekkarivillage with a relaxed picnic.

In the afternoon, there is also one of Otaniemi’s more obscure student traditions: a canoe is launched, with which the representatives of the Student Union paddle to take the message of the Flower Day to a person who is important to the students. Come and follow the live stream with commentary and see who the message will be given to this year!

From the Flower Day picnic, it’s good to move to the Rantasauna, where a grand evening party is being held! The sauna will be dressed up as a gorgeous party space, where you can find both a steamy jazz cavern and a lively dancefloor, as well as the hot sauna side. The pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) club OtaKoppi is finally moving to play outdoors and the summer season is beginning on Wednesday, 11.5. at 6 pm on the Tuuliniitty field, marking the first baseball of the summer. There’s no summer baseball on 18.5., but after that the games continue on Wednesdays from 6 pm to 8 pm. Everyone is welcome regardless of skill level; bring your friends along too to play!

You can find further information about the activity from the pages at http://otakoppi.fi and from the board of the club (otakoppi-hallitus@list.ayy.fi).

We’d still like to get some players for the women’s team of OtaKoppi in the summer. We play in a women’s regional league which is the lowest league level of the Southern pesäpallo conference, so there aren’t any particularly great ability requirements. Enthusiasm and a desire to play are enough! You can contact the board’s e-mail list if relaxed playing in good company interests you!

5.    Flower Day 13.5. – The picnic, message and afterparty

On the Friday of the anniversary week of the AYY, 13.5, from 3 pm to 6 pm the Otaranta park area will burst into its full splendour when the students of the Student Union gather on the seashore lawn to salute the traditional day of celebration of students and the birthday of the Teekkarivillage with a relaxed picnic.

7.    Humans vs. Zombies 4.5.-7.5.

The signup can be found at: tinyurl.com/hvzilmo

Facebook-event at: tinyurl.com/hvz2016

Disease is spreading!

A mysterious new pandemic is spreading fast. Rumour has it the infected become hell-bent on spreading the disease. Otaniemi has closed it’s railroads and airports to stop the spread of the virus, but will that be enough?

Humans vs. Zombies is a moderated game of tag where zombie players try to spread the infection by tagging human players. Humans can in turn protect themselves by hiding, fleeing or fighting back (using clean socks or foam gun darts to “”stun”” zombies). Exciting missions and quests will be available every day. The game is fun and interactive. Since teamwork is often the best strategy players are guaranteed to meet new people.

So join the fun! Spread the hype! Come help make a great game by being a great player. And the best part: Participation is completely free of charge. The organizers will provide the game scarf and ID-tag for you. All you have to do is sign up, show up and play.

2.    Students’ booking practices for Aalto University facilities

“Students may use teaching facilities when they have not been reserved for teaching purposes. Availability can be seen in the reservation list outside the facility (last minute changes are possible).

The facilities must be left in the condition in which they were found.

The meeting rooms on the fifth floor of OK1 are used primarily by staff. Students may use the rooms if they are empty but must leave if and when the rooms are needed by staff.

3.    Apply for civilian service at the AYY

Did you know that your Student Union serves as a civilian service site in accordance with the Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007)? At the moment, the Student Union offers three (3) work service positions at a time: those of a property assistant, graphic designer (AD) and IT support person.

The start dates for each position can be found from the directory of the Civilian Service Centre. Unfortunately, the Student Union cannot take on a new person who is obliged to do civilian service significantly before the work term of the previous person obliged to do civilian service ends. At the moment, we’re looking for a property assistant who could start in their role as soon as possible and a graphic designer to start in August.

We appreciate creativity, accuracy and co-operative ability. The AYY offers civilian service workers a pleasant working environment in Otaniemi, Espoo, cheerful and nice colleagues, accommodation near the workplace and other legally-decreed benefits.

You can read more detailed information about the contents of the roles on the web pages of the AYY at /siviilipalvelus/.

If you are interested in the Student Union as a civilian service location, contact the General Secretary of the Student Union (paasihteeri@ayy.fi / 050 520 9415).
