This is AYY’s weekly newsletter 45/2016

This week the Teekkari tradition week is ongoing! The events are open for everyone. See the program of the week on http://teekkarius144.ayy.fi/english.html and join the fun!

Association-related issues can be found in the association newsletter. Read the newsletter at /en/associations/association-newsletter/

2.    A recap of the usage terms of AYY’s one-off rental premises

During the autumn, it has increasingly begun to look as if people have concentrated in the premises on having fun. That’s good; the study years are a unique time and they should be enjoyed!

However, it would be good to remind oneself of certain basic issues, so that the traces of the celebrations don’t spoil the pleasure of other users of the premises at their own event, and so that the premises stay in good condition for coming student generations too. Here’s a summary of the key points:

  1. The rental terms have to be accepted every time that a booking is made by ticking the section “I accept the rental terms” in conjunction with the booking separately. Below this, there is also the section “Read the rental terms here”. In the rental terms themselves, there are parts stating the tasks of the person in charge, other usage instructions, which can be found on the web pages of AYY, and sanctions in the event that terms have been broken. No separate rental contract is made any more for premises, but instead it’s stated in the rental terms that “The rental contract comes into being upon acceptance of these usage terms with their appendices and upon receipt of the key”. In other words, always familiarise yourself with the text in small print too!
  2. Nothing much can go wrong if the usage regulations for the rental premises of AYY are complied with. If rental terms and usage regulations are not complied with, this will result in a sanction, the varying sizes of which can be seen in conjunction with the usage regulations.

In usage of the premises, taking the times of use on board seems to particularly cause the most intentional or accidental misunderstandings, so let’s recap them once more too:

  1. The time of use of any premises is defined separately and times of use can be found not only on AYY’s web pages, but also from the TILA system by clicking the name of any premises. Using the premises at other times without AYY’s permission is forbidden and punishable with sanctions. If one wishes to use any premises at times other than the ones stated, this must be requested separately and permission must be obtained from AYY, in the case of both morning and night-time use.

The rule of thumb is easy to remember: the time of use of any one-off rental premises in a residential building ends at the very latest by 11 pm. Longer usage times that differ from these can only be found in three party premises (the premises of OK20, Smökki and Rantasauna) and in guest cabins. In addition, for the moment the usage time of Gorsu is from 4 pm to 3 am, but because there have been an increasing number of warnings about the noise carrying across to flats from the premises, it’s quite possible that its usage time will also end at 11 pm if the disturbances continue.

  1. In conjunction with the usage regulations, there is also a cross-reference to the regulations of the Teekkari Village, and those should therefore also be taken on board. With regard to them, I will particularly highlight the reference to night-time peace in Section 4:

”On weekdays from 11 pm to 7 am and on weekends from 12 midnight to 9 am, singing, playing of music, use of loud TVs, radios, stereos and equivalent things, and any other kind of causing of noise, is forbidden, not including a teekkari hymn that is performed in an orthodox manner. If the case is one of a haphazard disturbance which cannot be avoided, agreement about the matter must be reached sufficiently early with the residents who would be affected by the disturbance.”

Please note that this Section also applies in the case that the user has been granted permission for night-time use. Therefore, authorised continued use of the premises into the early hours does not grant permission for fooling around, making noise and other actions that disturb residents.

To finish up, here’s still a reminder about returning the keys of the premises and the cancellation of premises:

  1. Remember to cancel premises that are not required as soon as the need for them is no longer there: however, at least 14 days before the date of use of the premises.
  2. Also remember to return the keys of the premises by 12 noon on the next working day to the service point: so, in the case of weekend bookings, by Monday the following week at the latest. Missing keys cause additional work for the service point. If keys are not returned, not only will you be charged for the costs of having new keys, but also for reserialisation of locks, so be careful with keys.
  3. Absolute huge piles of lost property have come to the office of AYY during the autumn from different events, and because we don’t have at all sufficient resources to deal with them, we have to dispose of objects on a regular basis. In addition, things have also been stolen in Otaniemi, for example during sauna sessions, so you should also keep in mind in that sense that no undesired guests come to events. Look after your things at events!

To recap: read the rental terms and usage regulations of the premises and the regulations of the Teekkari Village. Respect the times of use of the premises. Remember to cancel premises on time. Remember to return the keys on time. Take care of your possessions during events. Remember to have fun, but don’t disturb residents with your fun.

If you have any questions about the issue or development suggestions, contact AYY’s premises sector (tilat@ayy.fi).

3.    Apply for AYY’s exchange grant!

In the autumn, AYY is handing out exchange grants to support the internationalisation and active community action of students. Come and witness this Tampere-style cultural experience! Here’s a description of what’s to come:

The seed of the renaissance is germinating in 13th-century Florence. Artists are struggling with the conflict between their own progressive ideas and the conservative church. Cardinal Agusta Vespasianus has commissioned a portrait from the great artist da Linssi. However, the all-round genius is interested in astronomy and his patron is prepared to do almost anything in the cause of enlightenment. Fortunately, young love draws attention away from the potentially explosive situation when da Linssi’s apprentice Fiat meets his childhood sweetheart.

Will da Linssi break under the pressure of the church? How will Fiat solve his woman trouble with his friend? Big emotions, world-revolutionising ideas, avoiding the Inquisition…and ankles. The reputations of people of great influence are hilariously in the balance in this year’s NääsPeksi: ’Naamat Taulussa’.

7.    Humans vs. Zombies 19.-22.10.

The signup can be found at lomake.ayy.fi/aava/humans-vs-zombies Zombie virus is spreading! Does humanity have any chance against the ever growing zombie horde? Delays with the metro have also delayed the spread of the virus to Otaniemi, but it is only a matter of time until the virus hits.

Humans vs. Zombies is a moderated game of tag where zombie players try to spread the infection by tagging human players. Humans can in turn protect themselves by hiding, fleeing or fighting back (using clean socks or foam gun darts to “”stun”” zombies). Exciting missions and quests will be available every day. The game is fun and interactive. Since teamwork is often the best strategy players are guaranteed to meet new people.

So join the fun! Spread the hype! Come help make a great game by being a great player. And the best part: Participation is completely free of charge. The organizers will provide the game scarf and ID-tag for you. All you have to do is sign up, show up and play.

The preliminary rules of the game can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1987mA_3xeu4my_epuEdtsovsxcJ358ohHHtfqujjAVo/

The final rules might have slight modifications. Info-events will be earlier that week, exact schedule later.

After the game ends there will be a closing sauna on Sunday October 23rd at Otakaari 20.

2.    Problems with SIP-insurance? Claim your refunds now

Do you have a SIP-Complement Insurance and have you had problems getting refunds for your medical costs? Now you can claim your missing costs from the insurance company! Many students have had problems with SIP-Complement insurance. Chubb, the insurance company has been interpreting the insurance policy in a disadvantageous way and has only paid a 20% compensation for medical costs if the students have not been able to prove they have a Kela-card (which international students most often do not have). AYY has explained the insurance company how the social security system, YTHS, municipality of residence and international degree students status function in Finland. Now Chubb has admitted it has interpreted the insurance policy in a wrong way and it is ready to review its decisions and pay back refunds in full to students. If you have applied for refunds for your medical costs and Chubb has only paid you a 20% compensation claiming that you do not have access to a mutual health care cover in Finland, you can now send your case for a review and get full compensation for your costs. Send your claim number to  beneluxclaims@chubb.com and request a review of the decision. If the insurance company is still refusing to pay you compensation, do not hesitate to contact international@ayy.fi.

3.    Report delayed course grading

Aalto University’s teaching and study regulations provide that exams and other study performances must be reviewed and recorded in the study register within one month. If your exam results or credits are late, you can report it to Aalto University administration.

  • ARTS: Leena Koskinen (leena.koskinen@aalto.fi)

4.    Civilian service at AYY? Property assistant wanted!

Did you know that your Student Union serves as a civilian service place in accordance with the Civilian Service Act (1446/2007)? At the moment, the Student Union is offering three work service positions at the same time: a property assistant, a graphic designer (AD) and an IT support person.

The start dates for each role can be found in the position directory of the civilian service centre. Unfortunately, the Student Union can’t take on a new civilian service worker significantly earlier than when the work service of the previous worker ends. At the moment, we are looking for a property assistant who could start in their position as soon as possible.

We value creativity, precision and an ability to work together. AYY offers a civilian service worker a pleasant work environment in Otaniemi, Espoo, cheerful and nice colleagues, a flat near the workplace and other legally-decreed benefits.

The task of the property assistant is to take care of the upkeep and development of the Student Union’s association premises and residential sites, together with the association and accommodation sectors and the construction foreman.

The work profile includes checking the condition and fittings of the rented premises and the residential sites of the Teekkari Village, as well as the small repair jobs associated with these. The work of the property assistant occasionally includes office work and looking after current matters at the office of the Student Union. It would be desirable for the applicant to have experience of the construction field and maintenance. A class B driving licence is a minimum requirement. In short, we’re looking for someone comparable to a caretaker.

If you’re interested in the Student Union as a place for civilian service, contact the General Secretary of the Student Union, Niko Ferm (paasihteeri@ayy.fi / 050 520 9415).

5.    The volunteer search of AYY is now open!

6.    Teekkariperinneviikko is coming in November!

Teekkariperinneviikko, the teekkari tradition week, is coming again and this time it’s time to lay teekkari knowledge on the table. Do you know in which year the teekkaris moved to Otaniemi? Or why there’s a bobble in the teekkari cap? If you know, excellent, but if you don’t, no worries! This year, the Teekkaripeli game playable online during the Teekkariperinneviikko will tell you the answer.

Teekkariship will be 144 old this year and this will be celebrated for a whole week on 7.11.-12.11. There will be a plentiful array of familiar events, but also new fun stuff to do. During the week, you can, for example, challenge your friends to compete in knowledge of the teekkari culture in the Teekkaripeli, think up new words for songs and perform them at the Laulukilpailusitsis and go out to conquer the eastern neighbour city, Helsinki, under the guidance of the checkpoint map of the Polin Appro! The Teekkariperinneviikko concludes with the 200-strong Teekkariperinnejuhla party, which offers guaranteed festive bustle, and best of all, you can continue the party on the next day with the Teekkarisillis. So make a note of the week in your diary and listen out, because all the events of the week will be presented this week on the Facebook of the Teekkari Section!

Signing up for the Teekkariperinnejuhla and sillis will be open from Wednesday, 5.10. at 12 noon! So be quick and ensure your place in the coolest party of the year at www.teekkarius144.ayy.fi. Ticket sales for the Polin Appro and the Dipolin Appro starts for the associations on Wed 5th Oct.  More information about all the events of the week can be found from the web pages www.teekkarius144.ayy.fi. See you in November!

Questions can be sent to the moderators: hvzotaniemi@gmail.com
