5.    Apply for Aava’s Afterparty and Humans vs Zombies committees

AYY’s Community section Aava is now taking in applications for committees! The committees in question are the Afterparty committee and the Humans vs Zombies committee.

In the Aalto Afterparty committee you get to plan and make happen the spectacle that starts the new academic year with a bang! The committee is lead by Aava’s Afterparty coordinators, and as a committee member you will get to know nice people and enjoy yourself in a fun group. Go ahead and apply!

The Humans vs Zombies game is coming back to Otaniemi in the spring and in the autumn. Whether you have taken part in HvZ or not, we want YOU to join the committee! You will get to plan the theme and tasks of the game, publicise the event, meet new people in a fun way, moderate the game, and especially realise ideas that might be completely silly! 7.    Shrovetide celebrations and Laskiaisappro pub crawl Tue Feb 28^th.

Come and join the fun in the traditional Shrovetide celebrations (Laskiaisrieha) at Ullanlinnanmäki hill on Shrove Tuesday, Feb 28^th, 2017, in Kaivopuisto park, Helsinki, from 11am to 4pm!

In addition to sledding, the program includes music, competitions, and the legendary ABB Academic downhill race starting at 1pm, where teams race for the title of the most amazing and innovative sled. The official afterparty is held at AYY’s Gravitaatio at Apollo Live Club.

However, for a long time there has been a break between Shrovetide celebrations and Gravitaatio, causing trouble for students. What to do before Gravitaatio? …but SAY NO MORE!

8.    Shrove Tuesday’s official afterparty – Gravitaatio

Gravitaatio is the biggest and most awesome party of the beginning of the year, held on Shrove Tuesday, Feb 28^th, as the official afterparty of Shrovetide celebrations. This year Gravitaatio will be more intense than it has been in a long time. When you are done sledding down Ullanlinnanmäki hill at Shrovetide celebrations, or just want to get your Tuesday night groove on, throw away your woollen socks and head to Apollo for the official afterparty of the Shrovetide celebrations. With Portion Boys and the Swedish Günther & the Sunshine Girls taking the stage everyone is sure to feel the beat.

10.                  Ticket sales for Teekkarispeksi open on Feb 9^th.

Ticket sales for Teekkarispeksi 2017 will open on Feb 9^th at teekkarispeksi.fi/kauppa. In the last few years the shows have been practically sold out, so it’s best to pick a suitable day for an unforgettable theatre experience now: March 14^th (premiere) // March 20^th // March 21^st // April 3^rd // April 4^th // April 9^th (alumni show) // April 10^th // April 11^th.

11.                  Petteri Orpo as the guest of Kokoomusteekkarit and Kauppiksen porvarit on Tue Jan 31^st.

Minister of Finance Petteri Orpo will arrive in Otaniemi as the guest of Kauppakorkeakoulun porvarit and Kokoomusteekkarit student associations on Tuesday, Jan 31^st, from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. You are welcome to come and have a chat at Alvari’s square, near the downstairs lobby of the Bachelor Building. There will be sausages!

12.                  Can Christianity make sense in a modern society?

Ristin kilta (Guild of the Cross) will have an evening in English. We will be hosting Joel Gillin from the UCC (United Community Church) who will be speaking on the topic of: “Can Christianity make sense in a modern Society?” So if you’ve ever wondered about Christianity or want to find out a bit more about the Christian student scene, come and check it out! The evening will also include some worship and a chance to meet new people as well as a snack and a short devotion at the end.

13.                  Super Bowl evening 2017

Super Bowl 51 is played on 5.2. and Aalto Predators are hosting their annual Super Bowl evening at KY-yläkertsi (KY-House, 3rd floor at Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 21 B). Welcome to watch which one of the two teams will be triumphant in vying for the Vince Lombardi trophy!

14.                  “Physicists in a changing world” seminar Feb 18^th.

On Saturday, Feb 18^th, the Guild of Physics is organising a Physicist seminar in the B-hall of the Bachelor Building from 2pm to 6pm to honour its jubilee year. The event is open to all and free of charge. The subject of the seminar is “Physicists in a changing world”. The discussion in the seminar will focus on the achievements of physicists in the last 70 years, and what the next 70 years might possibly bring.

Tasty catering ensures the best possible seminar experience. The day will culminate in a panel where we have a chance to ask our speakers intricate questions related to the theme.

The speakers are top notch: Tuomo Suntola, the developer of atomic layer deposition, Matti Lehtonen, Chairman of the Board at GE Healthcare Finland, Antti Vasara, CEO of VTT, Kaija Pöysti, partner at Intosome Oy, and Ville Lehtola, City Council member and research fellow.

15.                  Welcome to create a temporary culture space to Otaniemi!

Aalto Tribe is a temporary student-led test platform and a “free space”, where people can gather, experiment ideas and co-create events, exhibitions and projects. The goal is to bring together different students, student organisations and locals in Otaniemi.

We are looking for new team members to our main organizing team. You can focus on for example designing the space, building, marketing or creating events.

The project is being planned now and will be realized in April-May 2017. The first meeting is on Thursday 2.2.2017 in Tokyo Space (Otakaari 1 Y) (Location in the link http://jy.fi/tribe/ ).

16.                  A first Geek Picnic in Helsinki in June – Join the team

Geek Picnic festival is the biggest popular open air festival of high technologies, science and art from Russia. In 2017 we are going to expand to a global scale and conduct a first Geek Picnic in Helsinki. And we would be happy if you will join our journey.

We’ve created Geek Picnic as a reflection of the spirit of modern life. As once the Woodstock festival reflected the values ​​of his days, nowadays Geek Picnic personifies the main symbols of our time – technological progress, researches, contemporary art.

We are looking for talented students interested in science, art and high technologies to help us with search of content of the festival (speakers, shows, technological start-ups, artists etc.). Active and well-organized students can use this opportunity to get a practice in big international event and meet local and international gurus in science, art, technologies, gaming and other fields of festival’s interest.

17.                  Start doing aikido at Otaniemi!

Aalto Aikikai welcomes all new beginners to join its activities in late January or early February. We are arranging an aikido performance on Tuesday, Jan 31^st, at 5pm in the tatami hall at Jämeräntaival 5. Practice for new beginners starts on Thursday, Feb 2^nd, at 5pm in the tatami hall at Jämeräntaival 5.

Beginners’ practice times in the spring of 2017:

Mondays from 4.30pm to 6pm at Otahalli

Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm at Jämeräntaival 5

You can join the practices during the first two weeks, and you can practise for free for a couple of weeks. If you like it, we will ask you to pay a beginner’s fee of 50 euros that will cover all practices for the year 2017.

18.                  University of Helsinki Taekwon-Do club introductory course begins

The Taekwon-Do club of the University of Helsinki is organising an introductory course for the students and staff of the University of Helsinki and Aalto University. At practice you will be acquainted with the different aspects of Taekwon-Do, improve your fitness level, strengthen your core, and learn kicking and punching techniques, as well as body control and maintenance. No previous experience needed.

The course begins on Tuesday, Feb 7^th, 2017, and you can join it any time in February. The course lasts the whole spring semester, ending in a grading examination. Practice is held on Tuesdays from 4.30pm to 6pm in the gym hall at Helsingin Normaalilyseo (Ratakatu 6, entrance from the courtyard) and on Sundays from 11am until noon at UniDojo (Pohjoinen Hesperiankatu 25). The course costs 50€, covering the practice fee, club membership, and examination fee. You can try out the sport for free for the whole of February!

19.                  PSK Kupla is organising an introductory course to scuba diving and a test dive in the spring of 2017!

Once you have successfully passed the diving course you receive a CMAS */P1 diving certification that meets international norms and enables you to safely dive to depths of 15-20 metres in Finland and abroad. The course begins with an information lecture, open to all and free of charge, on Friday, Feb 10^th, at 5.30pm. The information lecture is held at Kupla’s club room at Kammio, located behind Jämeräntaival 1.

After the information lecture there will be an introductory dive at Leppävaara public pool, where you have a chance to try out scuba diving in a pool, guided by an experienced trainer. The test dive costs 10€. 2.    Broaden your horizons – the exchange recruitments are coming

My exchange time was absolutely one of the best times of my life and I can’t imagine one reason why anyone would choose to not make use of such a fantastic opportunity. A student exchange offers so much more than one might imagine at first, and therefore the most important thing is to set off with an open mind. With the right attitude, you get so much more out of the exchange than just a few travel stories and the obligatory performance points. For me, it was really an experience that changed my attitude to life.

4.    Apply for Study Innovation grant

Aalto University and its student union allocate in cooperation study grants for incredible projects that promote studies and learning. You can apply for the grant by yourself, together with your friend or association – as long as the idea is good, we want to help you to implement it!  The application period is continuous and applications are processed on a monthly basis, the idea is that your good idea does not get old and you could implement it straight away. Applications are processed and approved by Aalto University Student Union’s academic affairs sector and Aalto University’s vice president in charge of teaching. 5.    Mosaic’s first Cafe Lingua of the year on Thu 26^th Jan

Are your language skills a little rusty? Would you like to learn to speak like the native or just chat with the international group of friends? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Cafe Lingua is just for you! Once a month, one of the places in Otaniemi turns at casual language cafe, Café Lingua.

Café Lingua is a free-form language learning opportunity, where people interested in a particular language gather around the same table to talk and to learn the language in a fun way. The idea is to practice languages in small groups, meeting people, learning about different cultures and at the same time enjoy a cup of coffee and snacks. On arrival at the scene, you can either join one table with the language you are interested in or set up you’re a table for a new language!

7.    Annex Aalto 2017 is here 25.-26.1.2017!

Annex Aalto is a completely new, interactive learning event, for all Aalto students, created by fellow students from KY, Prodeko and Athene. Regardless of your study background, you are warmly welcome to join us during Wednesday and Thursday evenings (25. – 26.1.) in the U wing of Otakaari 1.

The theme of Annex Aalto is 21st Century Darwinism, which is split into two evenings that center around both companies and individuals. Through these two points of view we explore how bigger companies and us as individuals can blossom in the age of fast change, digitalization and robotization! And while at it, you can earn 1 ECTS by attending!

8.    The Periods of Working Life in University Studies guide

AYY has worked together with Aalto on making the ‘Työelämäjaksot yliopisto-opinnoissa’ (‘Periods of Working Life in University Studies’) guide. The guide is intended for the use of students, universities and companies too and includes instructions and examples for the different stages of a period of work, from planning to reporting. The guide is intended for the use of all universities and it can be utilised during all study periods that include spells of working life. 9.    Take part in MPIDEA competition – Top Prize awaits!

The Finnish Industry’s great idea competition for creating 100 000 jobs lasts until 15 February 2017. The Main Prize is access to the growth accelerator ReNew Growth of McKinsey & Company, the world’s most respected consultancy. One can participate in the competition with any idea, product, or service, which will create more jobs to Finland. Anyone can take part; individually, as a group, or as a representative of a company.

The best proposals will gain publicity and can present themselves at the Manufacturing Performance Days 2017 (MPD) industrial event at Tampere 29-31 May 2017, where also the winner will be announced.

10.                  The sale of food that is wasted is being tried out in the Alvari restaurant

Save a lunch! During the trial, the Alvari restaurant will sell food that would otherwise be wasted from Monday to Thursday, from 5.15 pm to 5.30 pm and on Fridays from 3 pm to 3.15 pm. The price of a portion is €3.

3.    CGI’s Future Talent event 27.1.2017

CGI is organising the Future Talent recruitment event, aimed at students and fresh graduates in the technological, commercial and service design fields on Friday 27.1.2017 at the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki.

At the event, you can get to hear interesting speeches, take part in various kinds of workshops and network with recruiting managers! The intention at the event is to recruit as many as 50 new trainees for a new trainee programme in the speed meeting spirit. CGI is also arranging free bus transportation from the Otaniemi campus to the event!

4.    Broaden your horizons – go on a student exchange! Aalto’s common exchange fair on Monday, 16.1.2017 in Otaniemi

Come and find out about your exchange opportunities at Aalto University’s common student exchange fair! At the site, you’ll also hear about training opportunities abroad and the grants of Aalto University’s careers and recruitment services for international training. In addition to the representatives of the colleges, may external parties will be involved, such as Kilroy Education, ISIC Finland, Campus France etc.

As part of the exchange fair, the Finnish-Iranian stand-up comedian, presenter and radio personality Ali Jahangiri is coming to talk to the students of Aalto about internationalisation and the benefits it brings in his own side-splitting style. Ali knows what he’s talking about; he’s an alumnus of Aalto University and was on a student exchange himself during his studies.

6.    The first application round of TTE-Fund in 2017 is open!

The first application round of TTE-Fund in 2017 is open! The fund may grant financial aid for all AYY members and the association within it. TTE-Fund supports visible activities that reach for the stars and make other people excited.

You can apply for grants from TTE-Fund in two ways: through the application rounds arranged approximately three times a year and through the continuous application period which is open during the academic terms. During the continuous application period, you can apply for the grants with the maximum of 2000€, whereas the amount of project grants during the actual application rounds is not limited.

The first application round of 2017 will end on Sunday, 22 January 2017, at 11.59pm. Instructions for the application and its attachments are available on the website of the fund at http://tter.ayy.fi/. The grant can be applied for with an online form which is available at: https://lomake.ayy.fi/tter/hakulomake/

7.    The Kandipalaute bachelor’s feedback is being revised – if you’ve done a bachelor’s degree, reply to the survey and have an influence!

The common and national student feedback survey of universities, Kandipalaute, is being revised. From the beginning of 2017, the HowULearn questionnaire developed at the University of Helsinki will be used as the basis of the survey. All students who have done a bachelor’s degree or equivalent studies will respond to the Kandipalaute survey.

Feedback received from students is important in the development of the quality of education, better operating practices and teaching and guidance. The results of the Kandipalaute survey also affect the funding of universities. Since 2015, the Ministry of Education and Culture has distributed a total of about 50 million euros of the basic funding allocated to universities on the basis of the national student feedback.

9.    Polytech Choir singing auditions 11.1. and 18.1.

Singing with an attitude! The Polytech Choir is looking for new members to join its ranks! Are you burning with desire to enchant the world with your singing, from the Servi cabin to the Helsinki Music Centre and the ends of the Earth? Welcome!

The singing auditions of the Polytech Choir will be held on two Wednesdays in January, on 11.1. (5 pm to 6 pm) and on 18.1. (5 pm to 6 pm) in the rehearsal room of the choir in the TUAS building in hall AS2 on the first floor (Maarintie 8). At the event, you’ll get to perform one unaccompanied piece of your choice.

10.                  Taido’s beginners courses in 2017

Did you make a New Year’s resolution about increasing exercise or starting a new hobby?

The University’s Taido offers agile movement, half-contact sparring and acrobatics in a budo spirit and with a good bunch of people. Our training sessions offer enough challenges and the experiences of success, regardless of starting level. Taido suits you, whether your aim is to improve your physical condition, practise martial arts skills or learn how to somersault, for example. The starting dates of the spring 2017 Taido Core beginner’s course:

12.                  Join women’s american football team Aalto Aliens

Are you a female student at Aalto University? Are you interested in finding a new sport or continuing a beloved hobby? There is a women’s American Football team at Aalto University, Aalto Aliens! Aalto Aliens practice on Sundays from 15:10-16:40 at Otahalli in Otaniemi, and they are open for students to come try out the sport. American football is a sport that requires players of many different athletic types: from smaller agile skill positions in the secondary and backfield, to the heavy lifters on the line of scrimmage. The team plays in the Finnish Academic League, which is comprised of players of all experience levels: from beginners to Maple league and national team players. No matter what your experience level or athletic type, there is a position for you in Aalto Aliens. The team also organizes evenings for players to watch games, socialize, and hang out. Are you looking for a new hobby? Start partner dancing. On the beginner’s courses, the basics of the most common ballroom dances are taught (incl. the waltz, foxtrot, jenkka and bugg). 4.    AYY’s lost property practices are changing

Up till now, it has been possible to bring objects from clothes and bags to items of value to AYY, found in the one-off rental premises of AYY or the campus area. Due to a lack of resources, the lost property service will end at the end of this year and such items will no longer be accepted at the office of AYY.

This means that from there on, passing on clothes or bags found in the premises of AYY or the campus to lost property offices or their owners is at the responsibility of the event organisers. It will only be possible to bring phones, wallets, keys and spectacles to the service point of AYY. Travel cards found are to be returned to the service points of HSL or given to bus drivers, who will pass them on to HSL.

So, the period of November and December is the last time that you can come to look for your lost property. At the end of December, all existing lost property will be taken from the storerooms of AYY for recycling or waste collection.”

6.    Opening hours of Otaniemi FSHS on christmas time

Opening hours during Christmas time the FSHS unit in Otaniemi. The unit is closed 24.12.2016–1.1.2017.  When our unit is closed you should primarily contact your local municipal health center. We wish you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays and all the best for the New Year!

7.    Mindfulness – Compassionate Learning on January

Mindfulness is a state of open attention on the present. It’s living here and now. Mindfulness involves nonjudgmental conscious awareness of one’s feelings, thoughts and surroundings. In an educational context mindfulness applied to learning is the practice of ignoring distractions, disregarding unhelpful self-criticism and keeping focused. It can deepen our understanding and help us to find learning as fascinating as it should be.

The workshop consists of five session on Mondays 10-12 hrs, January 9th to February 6th, class room Majakka (M140), Otakaari 1. The workshop is in English.

9.    Seminar: OR moves people

“How can pedestrian and vehicle traffic be designed to be smart through operations research, and how is this seen in the service provision to passengers? Come and hear in the seminar arranged by FORS (the Finnish Operations Research Society Reg. Assn., see. http://www.operaatiotutkimus.fi/index.html) how companies, such as Kone and the VR Group, make use of the methods of operations research when wrestling with these problems.

In addition, there will be discussion in the seminar about how mobility services will change in the future through demand-guided public transport and the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) concept.

The event is also a great opportunity to network with specialists in the field alongside coffee and sparkling wine catering. In addition, after the seminar we’ll go for dinner at the adjacent Rodolfo restaurant, payable at one’s own expense.

11.                  Fyysikkospeksi is looking for people to take charge of sub-areas

The search for the director of the next Fyysikkospeksi, which has its premiere in the autumn of 2017, has been completed and now we’re looking for people for the other sub-areas’ positions of responsibility. The application process will be done by the end of the year (31.12.) with the official form of Fyysikkospeksi 2017 (http://tinyurl.com/fyysikkospeksirekry), which is still open with regard to all other positions too. Knowledge of your own sub-area and experience of making speksis is seen as an advantage, but we don’t require any greater qualifications than that from applicants (except for being a member of the Guild of Physics). Note that the application itself doesn’t commit you: if some other role interests you first and foremost, selection to a position of responsibility can be postponed on a case-by-case basis until other recruitment results become clear.

We’re looking for one or more people for the following roles in particular:

• The person in charge of the band
• The person in charge of dancing
• The person in charge of lyrics
• The person in charge of PR
• The person in charge of visuals, in whose team there are:
• The person/people in charge of set design and props
• The person in charge of the wardrobe
• The person in charge of make-up
• The person in charge of technology

The people in charge first have to assemble their own team with the producers. The greatest responsibility is the scheduling and organisation of the work of the team through the whole production, and of course directing the output of the team according to your own preferences. The board of the speksi, i.e. the Politbyroo, which consists of the principal people in charge, convenes from the spring onwards approximately on a weekly basis, and indeed the role includes close co-operation with other people in charge and taking part in the joint decisions of the speksi.

Positions of responsibility can be shared out and customised according to the personal interests of the applicants, so don’t hesitate to show even cautious interest! The producers at tuottajat@fyysikkospeksi.fi will be happy to answer further questions, for example about a more detailed job description, the schedules and the workload.
