AYY and Aalto are working together on an initiative to bring global competences (e.g. intercultural communication skills, global development questions, international phenomena of the field) into curricula, learning goals and outcomes, and we need your help and perspective! Multicultural is the word of the day – in most Aalto master level courses the teaching is in English and the classrooms international, in work life intercultural communication skills are needed in all professions, the Finnish society gets more diverse by the day. How are Aalto graduates prepared for this? What kind of skills does a global game changer need? Come share your experiences and ideas for development in the workshop on 23.3.2017 from 5pm to 8pm in Design Factory (Studio)! More information and enrollment: https://www.facebook.com/events/436867179986855/

5. Sports tutors wanted!

Brisk people interested in sports and organizing sports events are wanted for sports tutoring. The job of a sports tutor is to guide new students into sports. A sports tutor does not need to be an ISO/tutor: anyone can apply, regardless of their study year!

2-6 sports tutors will be chosen for every special status association, depending on the number of new students. Now it’s your chance to join our amazing team! You don’t need to be a top athlete to be a sports tutor; the main point is that you’re interested and enthusiastic about sports and want to do fun stuff with new students. In event creation, the sky is the limit: rock climbing, hiking, dodgeball at Alvar or even a student floorball tournament are all options!

Sports tutors aren’t left alone. Unisport supports tutors by providing free services for the tutors. Other sports tutors are also there to support and help you. Everything is more fun with friends! As a sports tutor, you will also make new friends in the cross-disciplinary tutor group.

8. Survey for higher education students and alumni with disabilities

The “Tarinoista voimaa” project is conducting a survey, the results of which will be used to develop an online service supporting the employment of higher education students with disabilities. The online service is open to everyone, but its particular focus will be students and guidance counsellors. The aim is to promote the social participation of people with disabilities by using the knowledge and skills that they develop in higher education institutions all over Finland.

We hope that all students with a disability could take part in the survey. We will hand out 4 gift vouchers (value 20€) among all participants who have submitted their contact information.

We have four Finnish top experts talking to us about these issues: Walter Ahlström Professor Matti Lehtonen from ELEC, Professor Jouni Partanen from LUT, Professor Sanna Syri from ENG and Leading Expert Risto Lindroos from Fingrid. A panel discussion on the subject will be held at the end of the seminar.

#LuovutusAalto – Blood donation challenge for AYY’s associations

For the very first time, the Aalto University Student Union challenges all its member associations to donate blood! Nearly a thousand voluntary blood donors are needed every weekday to make sure that about 50,000 seriously ill patients receive the treatment they need every year. Put your blood into circulation and donate now!

The blood donation campaign starts on the 1st of March 2017. During the campaign, from the 1st of March to the 30th of April 2017, the associations that have donated the most blood, both quantitatively and in percentage terms in relation to their number of members, are awarded the use of one of AYY’s sauna facilities for one night. All donors also receive an overall patch from the Finnish Red Cross as a thank you. In addition, groups that have donated at least 10 times during the year will receive a diploma and their names will be put up on the Blood Service website.

#LuovutusAalto #VeriRyhmä / #DonationAalto #BloodGroup

How to participate in the campaign:

  1. Register a VeriRyhmä group for your association at veripalvelu.fi/ryhmat. Name your group “AYY + name of your association”.
  2. Let AYY know that you are taking part in the campaign by filling out the form at https://lomake.ayy.fi/viestinta/luovutusaalto-verenluovutuskampanja-ayyn-piirissa-toimiville/.
  3. Donate blood as a group or individually at a Blood Service Centre (Sanomatalo, Kivihaka, Iso Omena and particularly at the Otaniemi campus on the 12th of April). To get your points calculated, remember to mention the name of your VeriRyhmä group to the staff at the Blood Service Centre during registration. Remember to take your official ID with you!

If you want to donate blood with a larger group, call the Blood Service Centre to arrange a donation time in advance. This way the Blood Service Centre can prepare for possible congestion. A good size for a group is 4 –6 persons, and you should reserve at least an hour for the donation.

  1. You should test whether you are suitable as a donor at www.sovinkoluovuttajaksi.fi. You can also call the free info phone for blood donors if you have any health-related questions, tel. 0800 0 5801 (weekdays 8–17). Communicate about the campaign and your blood donation events through your own channels and challenge everyone to take part.
  2. On social media, use the hashtags #LuovutusAalto/#DonationAalto and #VeriRyhmä/#BloodGroup to spread the blood donation challenge. Members will be informed of the campaign through the AYY website and the Facebook event.

Challenge your friends and fellow associations and lend a helping hand!

You may answer the survey when FSHS has sent you the link to participate. We will inform you of sending the links very soon. The surveys are sent in several rounds, so don’t get worried if you are not among the first ones to receive one. You may visit the FSHS “Self” service to update your info on where to send the link. More info on the “Self” service at http://www.yths.fi/self

Watch out on thin ice and slippery streets! Slipping and falling is the most common cause of pedestrian accidents during the winter, so be careful. Avoid hurry and reserve enough time for transfers. Good winter shoes are a must! Also, remember to wear a reflector during the dark hours of the day.

The season for stomach flu and influenza is well under way. Don’t infect others and take care of yourself. When sick, give yourself time to heal. Throw away used tissues, cough into your sleeve and keep washing your hands with soap. If you catch a dose of either disease, take care of yourself! Tips on how to do that can be found at the FSHS healthcare page, filled with knowledge fit for many situations. Click yourself to http://www.yths.fi/terveystieto_ja_tutkimus/terveystietopankki

17.                  Taiji beginners’ course 14 Feb 2017

Taiji is a traditional Chinese martial art for self defence, where movements are generally learned in slow motion. Unlike in traditional Finnish sports which are often based on simply working up a sweat while leaving your brain on a single-minded track (or turned off!), in taiji we aim to move and practice with the whole body, mind included.

Many positive health benefits are known to come from practicing taiji. In the beginning most students will notice that their balance is getting better, the mind and the body are learning to relax, patience is cultivated and one can manage stress better.

Otaniemi Taiji Association Hiipivät lohikäärmeet will organize a beginners’ course during the spring term on Tuesdays at 15:15 – 16:45 in the Multi-Facilty Hall of Jämeräntaival 3A. Classes are taught in Finnish and English. First lesson will be on Valentine’s day

14 February 2017 and it is free of charge.

Come and experience a new way to move! You can also join the course later: on first Tuesday of every month.
