Emergency Housing Coordinator to help with accommodation at the start of the semester

News Bulletin

AYY

16.08.2017

The start of the semester is always a challenging time, but it is especially so to those, who start it in a new country. AYY’s goal is to anticipate issues and students’ needs, which is why AYY together with Aalto University hire an Emergency Housing Coordinator on a yearly basis. The Coordinator helps Finnish and international students who are without housing at the start of the semester.

This autumn AYY’s Housing Coordinator will be Katarina Naumanen. Naumanen is a 22-year-old student in Aalto Business School whose life consists of work, studies and soccer. She moved to Helsinki a year ago, having spent a year in USA playing soccer.

“I’m a semi-professional soccer player, which is why getting a job often works on the conditions of soccer schedules,” Naumanen says. “That is why I’m happy to work on a short-term project like this.”

Naumanen applied to AYY because she was interested to peek behind the curtain of her student union. She has previously worked in the private sector, but she’s happy to get a new kind of job experience.

“As a student I’m interested in seeing all different kinds of services the student union provides to students, and also play my own part in providing and improving these services,” Naumanen says. “In my job I will be able to help with students’ everyday life first hand. It’s challenging, but I’m sure it’s going to be very interesting!”

AYY’s Emergency Housing Coordinator will help those members, who have had trouble getting accommodation for the autumn of 2017. The Coordinator helps with finding the apartment, organizes temporary accommodation and answers general questions on housing issues.

Please find the Coordinator’s contact information and phone service times here: /en/housing/apartment-seekers/emergency-housing/contact-details/

The Aalto University Student Union (AYY) is a service and advocate association for about 15 000 students of the Aalto University. AYY works as an advocate for its members, especially in matters of educational politics and social issues relating to studies.

AYY is looking for a designer for its visual identity renovation

Commission

Aalto University Student Union is looking for a graphic designer to renovate AYY’s visuals. AYY wants to have a solid, comprehensive visual identity that reflects the world of AYY and its members. We want the visual identity to be timeless and flexible so it can be used in every situation: from web pages to presentations and from the look of AYY’s office to elements in the communal spaces of AYY’s housing.

The visual renovation is a project and it contains creating the identity as well as making a style book that can be used to make sure the visual elements will be used in the future. The project is approximately 3 months long.

If you are interested and want to make AYY an even better student union, send us your or your team’s CV, portfolio and a cover letter. The cover letter can include examples of previous similar projects or explain why you would like to work specifically on AYY’s visual identity.

The application is open until 19th of July and we want to decide on the recruitment as fast as possible after that. We will contact the applicants in a few days after receiving their application. Based on those we will send an invitation to an interview and ask for a proposal. At this point we will also give more details about the project. The final person or team to execute the project will be chosen based on the interviews, proposals, portfolios and aptitude. It is desirable that the applicants have knowledge of the Aalto community.

Send in your CV, portfolio and cover letter by 19th of July to the brand coordinator Henrik Lähdesniemi henrik.lahdesniemi@ayy.fi

We hope that the person or team chosen will be able to start working on the project as soon as possible.

1. General housing allowance as an AYY tenant

Students will be moved under the general housing allowance on the 1st of August 2017, meaning that the entire household’s income will affect the amount of the allowance. Below you can find the specific instructions for applying. The instructions apply to AYY tenants.

Shared apartment or a furnished shared apartment

AYY is drafting personal rental agreements to shared apartments, meaning that each tenant forms their own household. If you live in a shared apartment, apply for housing allowance alone. The income of other tenants does not affect the amount of received housing allowance.

Studio or a studio in a shared apartment

If you live alone in a studio or a studio in a shared apartment, your household only consists of you alone. People living in studios in shared apartments are not affected by the income of other tenants. People living alone apply for housing allowance alone.

If, however, you share a studio or a studio in a shared apartment with someone else, you consist of a shared household. Kela will always decree these households to be cohabiting, and the income of each person will affect the allowance. Apply for the allowance jointly.

Duplex, Three-room apartments and four-room apartments

Current situation

AYY is making friend- and family rental agreements to duplexes and three-and four-room apartments, which all have shared responsibilities. This means that people living in friend- and family agreements form one household, and the income of all will affect the allowance. People living in a duplex, three-room or four-room apartment with a shared rental agreement must apply for the allowance jointly.

If you are the only primary tenant in a duplex, three-or four-room apartment, and you have sub-letted a part of the apartment to one or more people, you may apply for the housing allowance alone. The sub-letters may also apply alone, if each sub-letter has their own separate sub-let rental agreement.

If you live alone, the situation is same as with people living in studios, and you may apply for the allowance alone.

AYY upcoming actions

AYY is currently undertaking a project to increase communal living. As a part of this project, apartments with several bedrooms are being converted to shared apartments and we are creating means where shared apartments could be applied to in the same way as friend apartments now. The aim is that on a long term AYY would have only shared apartments, shared studios, studios and family apartments available to its tenants. The timetable for these changes will be published to the tenants when they become relevant.

The work will be done in one shift between 12:00 and 18:00. The duration of the employment relationship is four weeks, from the 21st of August until the 15th September 2017. The distributors will be paid according to the Student Union Collective Agreement, on a pay grade of I (basic salary in full-time employment is 1409.04 € per month, and the calculated salary for this task is approximately 1127 €).
