6. #LuovutusAalto vol. 2 still under way for November!

You can save a life near you!

Blood Service is organizing a blood donation event on the 7th of November 2017 from 11:00 to 16:00 in Dipoli’s Palaver hall (Otakaari 24). Welcome!

Nearly a thousand voluntary blood donors are needed every weekday to make sure that about 50,000 seriously ill patients receive the treatment they need every year. That is why the Aalto University Student Union is once again challenging all associations active within AYY to donate blood for the common good!

The autumn LuovutusAalto challenge started on the 2nd of October, and you can donate until the 30th of November. Like in the spring, the associations that have donated the most blood, both quantitatively and in percentage terms in relation to their number of members, are awarded the use of one of AYY’s sauna facilities for one night, a diploma from the Finnish Red Cross – and of course glory and adoration! All donors also receive an overall patch from the Finnish Red Cross. In addition, groups that have donated at least 10 times during the year will receive a diploma and their names will be put up on the Blood Service website.

For more detailed participation instructions and registering your VeriRyhmä group, please visit: /en/blog/2017/10/19/luovutusaalto-vol-2/

15. Teekkarispeksi 2018 band search

The Teekkarispeksi 2018 production is about to start and, like all proper musicals, Teekkarispeksi also needs a live band. Teekkarispeksi is basically a musical that lasts the entire evening, and more than 20 songs are played during the speksi. The songs cover a wide variety of different music styles, so we’re trying to gather a very versatile band for the production. We’re looking for both traditional band instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards) as well as orchestral instruments (string and wind instruments) and of course singers. You can basically apply for the band regardless of your instrument. The Teekkarispeksi band rehearses in the spring, and the performances are held at the end of spring before the potential Wappu party.

A band jam will be held at the PELMU rehearsal studio on the 15th and 16th of November. The jam acts as an “entrance exam” for the band. You can sign up for the band jams at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc4yoCPbWOyD_mTmLl313oEjuQ_Ac3pKhLq0tOcHvCXVXhuDA/viewform

The DL for signups is on the 9th of November at 23:59, after which the applicants will be sent an email about the songs to be played at the jam along with any other practical information. Visit the link to find out more.

  1. If you don’t feel like playing in a band, you can come and help with the speksi in several other ways: bit.ly/mukaan-speksiin-2018

We are hosting an easily accessible Bible circle for students and young adults at the Gallow’s Bird pub on Wednesday, the 15th of November at 17:30. Strong suspicion of drugging a person in Otaniemi & safety in student events

STRONG SUSPICION OF DRUGGING A PERSON IN OTANIEMI & SAFETY IN STUDENT EVENTS

The Student Union of Aalto University (AYY) has been informed of a strong suspicion of a person being drugged at a joint event held by associations operating within AYY and the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY). The event was held on the 2nd of November at Servin Mökki. The event was stopped as a result.

The organizers of the event contacted AYY immediately, after which a representative of AYY also visited the venue. The organizers of the event had been given comprehensive safety instructions, and the event was organized according to these instructions. The organizers acted in an exemplary manner by securing the safety of the victim and aborting the event immediately in a controlled manner. The person was taken to a hospital by ambulance and they are fine. AYY and HYY have been in close contact with the associations that organized the event and will continue to follow the situation. The associations’ own announcement can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/225829981282545/permalink/235793573619519/.

Everyone’s joint safety is an issue that cannot be compromised on in any situation and no-one’s personal untouchability can be threatened. However, if this occurs, all kinds of harassment or other threatening behaviour must be intervened in at once. This applies to both external people and to the members of the student community. If an event is only meant to be open to students, persons wanting to attend can, for example, be required to present a valid student card. Also, whether they are closed or open to everyone, no persons should be admitted to events if their behaviour worries or threatens other participants.

The situation is always serious if it causes anxiety or someone feels unsafe. If a situation of danger occurs, it’s important to know how to act. Persons who are threatening or violate the personal untouchability of someone must be expelled from the event. In threatening situations, the event must be suspended at once. The event organisers have to make sure that appropriate preparations have been made for situations of danger. This means that at least fire safety, access control and threatening behaviour have to be prepared for. There is always cause to read the usage instructions of the premises, even if the location is familiar. Exit routes must be kept clear, passage signs openly visible and its must be checked that extinguishing devices and first-aid equipment are in place. The best way to pre-empt disruptive behaviour is

  • to agree on who is responsible for access control,
  • to make sure that the event is not allowed to expand in an uncontrolled way,
  • to agree on rules for threatening situations,
  • and to minimise easy risks (e.g. scissors, tools, cooking utensils etc. out of sight)

AYY takes all cases of harassment and dangerous situations occurring at student functions seriously. Suspected criminal incidents against the well-being of a person should always be reported to the police. In this way, we can show together that no kind of harassment or violence will be tolerated at functions of the Student Union and student associations.

In situations threatening the well-being of participants, the safety of the victims should always be ensured and the emergency centre should be called. We hope that there would never be any hesitation about reporting dangerous situations without delay to the emergency centre. We also hope that all dangerous situations and incidents of harassment would be reported to AYY. In this way, we can prevent the possible spreading of problems by working together.

Also read AYY’s and the Aalto Chaplains instructions on after-management of crisis situations in student associations. The instructions include advice on meeting a person who is in shock and arranging follow-up assistance, and their purpose is to provide an action model and contact details in case of those kinds of sudden, shocking situations, crises. 10. Club Night of Mysteries at Smökki on the 6th of November

It’s the time of year when Otaniemi’s most stylish people and smoothest savoir-vivre come together at Servin Mökki’s jazz club. Dressed in their sophisticated cocktail outfits, they’ll be sipping fabulous drinks, relaxing at the outdoors cigar lounge and feeling pleasantly superior to lesser peasants.

Suddenly a chilling scream resounds through the room! The first guests had barely arrived when the club’s long-time investor and renowned society fellow drops dead on the floor. Next to the body, a neatly written message, “Tonight’s last will be danced many times yet”. Only a bloody stain is left as a reminder of what happened – but what, indeed, did happen?

The first guests are in a state of shock (and of course not allowed to leave during the murder investigation), and the Halloween decorations of nooses, a mysteriously bloody candlestick, and let alone the pistol hidden in Mx. Glitter’s evening bag, are doing nothing to relieve the tension. But who did it? Come find out and help solve the murder!

Tickets to this tragedy’s opening night are only 6€. The first cocktails of the evening are on the house, as an apology for this tragic incident. Ticket sales will be in the Otakaari 1 lobby from the 30th of October to the 3rd of November between 11 and 13 o’clock.

Did you know that 25–30% of the all world’s food ends up in the garbage? Some of the food is left on the ground, some is wasted on the way, and some is left unsold at stores or restaurants. At the autumn’s Aaltositsit, the organizers have tried to decrease the amount of food waste by purchasing the ingredients for the sitsit mainly from Finnish online shops that sell clearance and discontinued products.

That is why on Thursday, the 23rd of November, Aava, KUVA and the Teekkari Section invite all Aalto people regardless of their line of study or starting year to enjoy a three-course dinner made from surplus food, as well as dazzling performances and new cross-disciplinary acquaintances. We want to give the participants the chance to experience the characteristics typical to Aalto’s different sitsi cultures and to get to know to new Aalto people outside one’s own field of study.

The sign-up for the sitsit opens on Monday, the 6th November at 12:00 at www.bailataan.fi. The number of seats is limited

19. PRK’s radio amateur course

Have you ever wanted to know more about electronics and radio technology? Would you like to get to know to people living on the other side of the globe through a direct voice connection without the internet, or take part in competitions with the goal of making contact with as many stations as possible using speech, Morse code or digital transmissions? Or would you rather try out various technical experiments with software radios or wireless data transfer, for example?

Completing a radio amateur degree allows you to do all this and gives you a good starting point for your radio amateur activities. PRK (Polyteknikkojen Radiokerho) is organizing a radio amateur course starting on the 31st of October at 18:00-21:00 at Ossinkulma (Otakaari 18A). The course lasts four weeks and ends with an exam.  Electrical physics learned in high school are more than enough to get started at the course, but even that is not necessary. All newcomers regardless of their background are welcome!

The course is free of charge for members of AYY and PRK, and it costs 10€ for others. You can complete a radio amateur degree at the end of the course if you want to. The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority charges a total of 97.8€ for the degree (exam 36€, certificate of qualification 43.75€, station license 18.14€ per year). By signing up for the course, you are not obliged to complete the degree, but you can decide to do so later. Registration for the course and course information channel:

Join us for the Design Now! seminar on Thu, November 2, 2017 at 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

In the Startup Crawl, you will travel around the downtown Helsinki and visit different companies. The companies provide groups with drinks, food, company and information about their activities. This is a great opportunity to network with the hottest operators in various fields.

This year’s themes:

HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE / TECH AND DESIGN / SUSTAINABILITY /GAMING

As per tradition, the legendary StartupCrawl afterparty is held at Smartly’s office, in downtown Helsinki.

The tickets cost 5€, and the price includes the Crawl itself, an overall badge and a whole bunch of good memories from the Crawl. Tickets are limited, so hurry up! The event has always sold out.

3. Reminder regarding the student loan compensation

Have you started your first course of study in higher education on or after the 1st of August 2014? If you answered yes, have taken out a student loan of at least 2500 euros and have completed or will complete your degree within the target time, you may be eligible for student loan compensation. A student who completes both a bachelor’s (180 credits) and a master’s degree (120 credits) may decide whether to apply for the compensation only for the bachelor’s degree or for both degrees.

Completing a degree means that you have to graduate. Completing your courses or submitting your thesis within 3.5 years (bachelor’s degree, 180 credits) or within 6 years (master’s degree, 120 credits) is not enough for the student loan compensation; you must complete your degree within that time.

Why: The student loan compensation is available to higher education students who began their first course of study in higher education on or after the 1st of August 2014. Students who have registered as attending the first time in the academic year 2014-2015 and want the student loan compensation already after completing their bachelor’s degree must complete their degree no later than on the 31st of December 2017. This means that the student must graduate by this date. Completing your courses or submitting your thesis by the 31st of December 2017 is not enough, because Kela requires you to actually complete your degree for the compensation.

For more details on the student loan compensation, visit this site: http://www.kela.fi/web/en/student-loan-compensation

You can check the graduation dates and schedules for your school from Into.

4. Apply for AYY’s exchange scholarships!

In the autumn, AYY is handing out exchange scholarships to support the internationalisation and active community action of students. The exchange scholarship can be applied for by those who are going on an exchange, are on an exchange at the moment and those AYY members who have returned from an exchange after April 2017.

The scholarship can be applied for from 12 noon on 25.10 to 11:59 pm, 15.11.
You can find further information about the scholarship and an application form here: /jasenille/palvelut/stipendit/

The scholarship is meant for the degree students of Aalto University.

7. MONTERILLO on the 31st of October

The days are getting shorter and the light fades away. Winter depression hits you and the cruel reality of the exam week spits on your face. Because the University is cutting costs, even the promised light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off. Even the price of liqueur in Estonia is rising.

But not to worry! This autumn, the freshmen of IK have once again turned the light on in the lighthouse to guide students who have gone astray from the real student culture to the safe haven of MONTERILLO! The light is burning bright in Otakaari 20 on the 31st of October, and there is fierce partying to be expected!

Casino MONTERILLO has a civilized dance floor for those who like to party in a sophisticated style, and a much more interesting speakeasy (= hidden bar) for those who have no good taste whatsoever. The best costumes will be rewarded: the fanciest dress or suit gets an excellent prize – but the most ragged clothes á la Uuno Turhapuro will be rewarded MAGNIFICENTLY!! The bravest and the most beautiful are welcomed with open arms, and the ugliest and the boldest by rolling out the red carpet.

WHEN: The magical doors to Narnia open on the 31st of October at 20:00

WHERE: Otakaari 20

DRESS CODE: Uuno Turhapuro/James Bond

WHY: Because it’s not every year that you get to attend a casino/glamour vs. speakeasy/dive bar themed party!

TICKET SALES: Tickets will be sold at the Undergraduate Center lobby at times announced later on the event’s Facebook page – so stay tuned!

In these Bisnesdates, we’ll discuss whether big data is just a daydream or if there are ways of exploiting it in business efficiently.

23. StartupCrawl on the 1st of November

Do you like excursions? What about appros? Yes? Of course?

Wouldn’t you say it’s time to combine these two excellent things?

We think it is. That’s why we’re organizing an event, one that was held also last spring and in the previous years: STARTUP CRAWL!

Startup Crawl returns bigger and better than ever. This year, you can choose from four different themes. Each theme includes a visit to four companies, and an afterparty for everyone.

More information on the event can be found on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1725759544396927/

#LuovutusAalto vol. 2!

Every day, Finnish volunteers save lives – be one of them!

Nearly a thousand voluntary blood donors are needed every weekday to make sure that about 50,000 seriously ill patients receive the treatment they need every year. That is why the Aalto University Student Union is once again challenging all associations active within AYY to donate blood for the common good!

In the spring, #LuovutusAalto collected a total of 34 donations, meaning that we helped over 100 patients. The competition was won by a landslide by the bioinformation technology guild Inkubio with 23 donations. Inkubio was rewarded at the AYY Annual Ball with thunderous applause, and they received glory and adoration, a diploma from the Finnish Red Cross, and a free sauna night at one of AYY’s sauna facilities. Inkubio’s diploma can be found on Instagram!

The autumn LuovutusAalto challenge starts on the 2nd of October, and you can donate until the 30th of November.

The campaign is part of the Suomi Finland 100 campaign, where the Blood Service challenges donor groups to donate 10 000 bags of blood in 2017! For more information on the campaign, visit the Blood Service campaign website.

How to participate in the campaign:

  1. Register a VeriRyhmä group for your association at veripalvelu.fi/ryhmat. Name your group “AYY + name of your association”.
  • If your association took part in the previous campaign, you do not have to establish a new group.

  1. Let AYY know that you are taking part in the campaign by filling out the form.
  • Once again, if your association took part in the previous campaign, you do not have to establish a new group.

  1. Donate blood as a group or individually at a Blood Service Centre and remember to mention the name of your VeriRyhmä group to the staff at the Blood Service Centre during registration! Also remember to take your official ID with you!
  • AYY will also organize blood donation points in Otaniemi in the autumn, and hopefully on other campuses as well.
  • In the spring, some of the donors mentioned only the fact that they were taking part in the LuovutusAalto campaign, forgetting to mention the name of their association. This led to the disqualification of a few “votes”. Sadness.
  • If you want to donate blood with a larger group, call the Blood Service Centre to arrange a donation time in advance. A good size for a group is 4 –6 persons, and you should reserve at least an hour for the donation.
  • You should test whether you are suitable as a donor at www.sovinkoluovuttajaksi.fi. You can also call the free info phone for blood donors if you have any health-related questions, tel. 0800 0 5801 (weekdays 8–17).

  1. Sign up for AYY’s Facebook event! Social media hashtags: #LuovutusAalto and #VeriRyhmä! Challenge your friends!
