In 1984, the Polytech Chamber Choir (Polyteknikkojen kamarikuoro, PKK) was given a room in Jämeräntaival 5B’s basement. Since then, the club room built by volunteers has been named Fermaatti, and the choir has changed its name to Dominante, but the room, which is almost in its original condition, sees more use now than ever.

Fermaatti serves as a rehearsal and party venue for Dominante and as a home base that is full of memories, stories and awards from dozens of trips the choir has taken around the world.

JMT is facing a pipeline renovation, which means that we have to give up our beloved home base for a while, but before that, we want to offer you the unique opportunity to see the original club room of Finland’s most successful mixed choir and find out more about its history and traditions by opening the doors to the public on Saturday, the 9th of December between 14:00 and 16:00. There will also be teekkari history present at the club room: Timo Tirkkonen, one of the original builders of Fermaatti.

AYY’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. The effects of the general housing allowance on AYY’s rental agreements

The transition to general housing allowance has caused difficulties for students living together, since students living under joint lease agreements are interpreted by Kela as a single household. This means that students who live together apply for housing allowance together, and the allowance is determined by their total income. As a solution to the problem, many students have drafted separate lease agreements or changed to a main tenant/subtenant arrangement, and AYY has investigated how to enable these options since last summer.

In its investigation, AYY found that it currently cannot enable either option. Drawing up separate rental agreements would lead to a situation where AYY would have to transform 2-room apartments and larger apartments into shared apartments, and living in shared apartments does not correspond to the current housing preferences of AYY’s members. AYY cannot allow a main tenant/subtenant arrangement to be carried out under the present housing regulation. We will look into the reformation of the housing regulation more in-depth next year, so changes to the matter are still possible.

2. AYY’s customer service facilities under renovation in Otaniemi!

3. Send a card to someone nice!

It is nice to get praise on your work but also to praise others. Now it’s time to say thank you to the university staff. The Aalto University Student Union will send a thank you card on your behalf if you tell us on the 9th of December at the latest who has been nice to you at https://lomake.ayy.fi/sosiaalipolitiikka/kortti-kivoille/. 13. What does “tradition” mean to Aalto people? Come listen and join the discussion on the 29th of November at 18:00 @ Design Factory

Lotta Aarikka, AYY’s Advocacy Expert 2011-2015:
“When I arrived at Otaniemi and started working at AYY, I quickly began to take notice of how much people talked about the student culture and student traditions. This was interesting for a cultural researcher, especially when considering that the discussion was not very critical of who could decide on what traditions are and how they are implemented. With this in mind, we decided to order a master’s thesis for the Student Union, and the thesis on folklore was completed in 2017, titled “Bad and boring traditions usually wither away.” Student traditions among the Aalto University students.

On the 29th of November 2017, Emi Maeda (M.A.) will present her master’s thesis, the aim of which was to find out how the students at the Aalto University perceive the student culture and student traditions. The thesis looks into what traditions meant for the examinees, what central traditions the examinees had, what role the traditions played in the examinees’ community, what kind of culture was supported by the traditions and notions of traditions of the examinees, and how traditions are maintained. The primary material of the study consisted of a survey with 58 questions and of 19 expert interviews.

We warmly welcome you to listen and join the discussion!

The event starts at 18:00, and it is held at the Design Factory Studio (Betonimiehenkuja 5).

That is why on Thursday, the 23rd of November, Aava, KUVA and the Teekkari Section invite all Aalto people regardless of their line of study or starting year to enjoy a three-course dinner made from surplus food, as well as dazzling performances and new cross-disciplinary acquaintances. We want to give the participants the chance to experience the characteristics typical to Aalto’s different sitsi cultures and to get to know to new Aalto people outside one’s own field of study.

The sign-up for the sitsit opens on Monday, the 6th November at 12:00 at www.bailataan.fi. The number of seats is limited

15. Teekkarispeksi 2018 band search

The Teekkarispeksi 2018 production is about to start and, like all proper musicals, Teekkarispeksi also needs a live band. Teekkarispeksi is basically a musical that lasts the entire evening, and more than 20 songs are played during the speksi. The songs cover a wide variety of different music styles, so we’re trying to gather a very versatile band for the production. We’re looking for both traditional band instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards) as well as orchestral instruments (string and wind instruments) and of course singers. You can basically apply for the band regardless of your instrument. The Teekkarispeksi band rehearses in the spring, and the performances are held at the end of spring before the potential Wappu party.

A band jam will be held at the PELMU rehearsal studio on the 15th and 16th of November. The jam acts as an “entrance exam” for the band. You can sign up for the band jams at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc4yoCPbWOyD_mTmLl313oEjuQ_Ac3pKhLq0tOcHvCXVXhuDA/viewform

The DL for signups is on the 9th of November at 23:59, after which the applicants will be sent an email about the songs to be played at the jam along with any other practical information. Visit the link to find out more.

If you don’t feel like playing in a band, you can come and help with the speksi in several other ways: bit.ly/mukaan-speksiin-2018
