AYY’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Plan the Student Center with us!

The opiskelijakeskus.fi web pages are now open! Check them out, browse the ideas and add your own.

The Student center is a joint venture by AYY, KY and Teknologföreningen. The plan is to build a building for all students to the Otaniemi campus, next to the metro station entrance and the Harald Herlin learning center.

A Student Center seminar was held in April 2018 to brainstorm what kinds of facilities, functions and services the center could have.

The ideas gathered onto the opiskelijakeskus.fi website are results of the seminar. Anyone can browse the ideas, like them and add their own ideas. The most popular ideas are looked at on Friday 15th of June, with continuation planning in mind.

So, visit the webpages and add your own top ideas. What would you want the Student center to have?

The people in charge of the Student Center in AYY’s board are Emma Savela (real estate) and Noora Tanska (community). Both are reached from their emails at firstname.surname@ayy.fi.

http://opiskelijakeskus.fi/

2. Searching for campus inspiration in Korea

The Aalto university Student Union board visited three Korean universities to search for inspiration for the campus development upcoming in Otaniemi and the Student center project.

Read the AYY blog on what kinds of ideas the Korea trip sparked up and what we could learn from Korean campus design here in Otaniemi: /blogi/2018/05/29/campus-inspiration-from-korea/?lang=en

3. Study credits for active students

Hello, active students!

Have you worked actively in the Aalto University Student Union (in a section, for example), in an association operating within AYY (as a board member or officer), or in the University as a student representative in administration in 2017? You can get study credits for it.

The course (3 credits) includes writing a reflection report regarding what you have learned in the task and participation in a peer learning seminar.

Click the link for more details: https://mycourses.aalto.fi/course/view.php?id=19730

4. AYY is now GDPR compliant

The EU general data protection regulation came into effect on Friday 25th of May 2018. AYY has prepared for the regulation in many ways to keep the data of our members safe.

The privacy statements on AYY’s registers with contact personnel can be found at https://rekisterit.ayy.fi/

AYY has trained its staff and the associations in its sphere of influence on the GDPR. You can check out the information, aimed towards associations, with examples, here: https://inside.ayy.fi/display/TIET/Tietosuoja

15. Stationery and art supplies will remain available on campus

The KynÀ ja Paperi store, which operated in the vicinity of Aalto ARTS for twenty years and moved to the Otaniemi campus from Arabia in the autumn of 2017, closed down in April. There will still be a stationery and art supply store on campus, however.

The new store, Aaltopahvi, continues in the footsteps of KynÀ ja Paperi with the same product selection, same facilities and same shopkeeper as in KynÀ ja Paperi. The boutique is open on weekdays from 11:00 to 16:00, and it is still open throughout May, located at the old Otaniemi shopping center, on the edge of the Alvari Square.

The store will close its doors after the final exams. In the summer, Aaltopahvi will move few hundred meters to the Harald Herlin learning center in Otaniemi (Otaniementie 9), next to Robert’s Coffee, and it will open its doors when the autumn semester starts.

Aaltopahvi focuses on stationery and art supplies. The vintage products and café familiar from KynÀ ja Paperi will no longer be available when the summer holiday starts.

Apply for SYL’s Advisory Board for Development Cooperation

Are you inspired by global influencing and promoting education on an international level? Are you a persistent communicator, good at building networks, or a fundraising pro? Do you want to share some of your expertise with the world?

We are looking for imaginative people, who are committed and motivated, to join the National Union of University Students in Finland SYL’s Advisory Board for Development Cooperation (KENKKU). SYL is Finland’s largest lobbying and service organisation for students, representing 15 member organisations and 130,000 university students. The Advisory Board for Development Cooperation advises SYL’s board on matters relating to development cooperation.

We expect KENKKU members to be committed and motivated, but the main aim of the KENKKU membership is to improve one’s skillset.

KENKKU is made up of three themed groups: the Communications Team, the Influencing Team and the Networking/Corporate Relations Team.

Each team has five members, and one of them acts as chairperson of the team. All KENKKU members meet three times a year: in September, in December/January and in May. KENKKU members are expected to participate in the joint meetings. In addition, the chairpersons of the teams also meet approximately once a month at SYL’s office to plan and develop KENKKU’s activities.

In between the chairperson and member meetings, the team work independently using the collaboration tool Slack. Each team also has two meetings of its own at SYL’s office. We hope that all KENKKU members will promote SYL’s development cooperation activities to the representatives, board and/or subcommittee for Development Cooperation of their student union.

KENKKU’s first joint meeting will be held on Friday 14 September 2018 from 10:00 to 16:00.

Apart from the meetings, members should reserve approximately 20 hours per term for KENKKU’s activities – slightly more for chairpersons. Lunch will be served at the meetings held at SYL’s office, and the travel expenses of the participants will be reimbursed.

The teams and their tasks:

  1. The Communications Team

The Communications Team is in charge of our development cooperation activities’ visibility on social media, creates content and comes up with ideas to improve our communications.

As a team member you get to write blog posts, coordinate student union visits and their content, and act as a link between KENKKU and the communications sectors of the student unions.

  1. The Influencing Team

The parliamentary elections will be held in the spring of 2019. As a member of the Influencing Team you get to develop content for SYL’s election lobbying in relation to development policy. As the European Parliament election is also drawing near, you also get to acquaint yourself with EU development policy.

The team’s tasks include research and creating background material and arguments for the lobbying work.

  1. The Networking/Corporate Relations Team

The Networking/Corporate Relations Team does the fundraising for the development cooperation work. You get to research and contact potential corporate partners and find support for SYL’s development cooperation activities.

We want to find team members with lots of ideas and a vision for marketing and fundraising.

In its work, SYL emphasises diversity and equal opportunities, so we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and genders.

Please send us an application, including a CV and a cover letter where you explain your views and experience in relation to our activities. You should also tell us which team you would like to become a member of and whether you might be interested in chairing a team. Please also include details on any circumstances which may lead to you not being able to take part fully in the activities for a prolonged period of time (e.g. plans for studies abroad).

Send in your application via email by 23 May 2018 to international@ayy.fi.

13. Human vs Zombies Otaniemi 10th–12th May

The set is ready, the props are on point, just missing one crucial thing…

We’re recruiting the freshest talents to join our crew in the making of the next big full-length zombie feature film! Are you the new face of the surviving humans or the eye-catcher in the undead horde? Lights, camera, action!

(Disclaimer: The production company is not liable in the case of actual living death.)

Humans vs Zombies is a moderated game of tag where zombie players try to spread the infection by tagging human players. Humans can in turn protect themselves by hiding, fleeing or fighting back (using socks or foam gun darts to “stun” zombies).

Exciting missions and quests will be available every day. Since teamwork is often the best strategy, players are guaranteed to meet new people. HvZ is created for campuses like Otaniemi, so we couldn’t have a better area for the game!

Participation is completely free of charge. The organizers will provide the game scarf and special items for you. All you have to do is sign up, show up and play.
