Student cards updated, prices changed

The new version of Frank App, the application that contains Frank’s digital student card, is now available and student card prices have changed from the 1st of August onwards. For more information on different student card options and pricing, click here.

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the new Frank App.

Why is the new Frank App asking me to register again?

The new version will ask you to register or log in with your student.frank.fi web service credentials, even if you have used Frank App before. This is because Frank is letting go entire of the old application and combining their digital services into one united service that includes both the app and their web service.

Please note that in order to register to the new Frank App, you have to be present for the current academic period. This means that the new Frank App cannot validate your student status if you are no longer present at the time of registering to the new app.

In case you are just now finishing your studies and won’t be present for the next academic period, you can continue to use the old version of Frank App up to end of August or for 30 days after you no longer have a present student status.

Where’s my digital student card?

The new application will open up to the latest discounts and other relevant information, but not worries: your digital student card is just one swipe away or easily tapped open from the bottom navigation.

More questions?

See the FAQ section on Frank’s website: www.frank.fi/en/faq

If the FAQ section doesn’t help, please contact info@frank.fi

Welcome to AYY!

Hi, new student! A warm welcome to Aalto University – and of course to AYY, the Aalto University Student Union.

We have collected an information package on this page to help you get started with your student life. Keep in mind that you can always turn to AYY’s staff if you have any questions related to student life. You can find our contact information here.

See you in the autumn!

Student Union housing and services

The Aalto University Student Union owns apartments that are rented to Aalto University students.

First-year students and students moving from outside the Helsinki metropolitan area are given priority when distributing apartments. You can apply for an apartment as soon as you have received confirmation of being accepted to Aalto University.

When applying for an AYY shared apartment, first year students receive a so-called “freshman point” that gives them priority over students who have studied at Aalto for longer. To receive the point, you must apply for an apartment before the end of July or end of December, depending on when you are starting your studies.

Applying for an AYY apartment

Unfortunately, AYY cannot provide student apartments for all Aalto University students, so you should also look for a home through other channels. Check these out, for example:

Other services

In addition to apartments, AYY does advocacy work for its members and offers them various other services. For example, AYY members can rent sauna and meeting facilities and a van at very affordable prices.

You can find out more about AYY’s member benefits and services here.

The Otaniemi service office at Otakaari 11 helps you in housing matters and other issues related to the Student Union’s services. You can find the office’s opening hours here.

Associations and volunteering

There are more than 200 associations operating within AYY’s sphere of influence, from subject associations and guilds to sports clubs and hobby associations. If you want to continue your old hobby or start a new one, you can do it in the Aalto community!

Find out more about associations operating within AYY here.

You can also take part in the Student Union’s activities by working as a volunteer. AYY’s volunteers organize numerous events every year and work with international and corporate cooperation matters, among other things. Volunteers are the heart of AYY – by volunteering, you can have an impact on what the Student Union does and what it looks like.

Most of AYY’s volunteer recruiting takes place at the end of the year, in November–December, but the search for project-based tasks may be open also at other times. Follow AYY’s communications for example via Facebook.

Student financial aid and the student card

Student financial aid

Finnish student financial aid consists of the study grant, student loan and meal subsidy. You can also apply for general housing allowance separately.

Please note that unfortunately, international students are usually not eligible for student financial aid – see following links for details.

Frank

You can order your student card through the Frank service. Frank offers both a digital and a traditional, plastic student card. For 15€, you can add the international ISIC license to both cards, entitling you to over 150,000 benefits in more than 130 countries.

The digital student card Frank App is an official student identifier tag. You should download and activate it immediately after paying your AYY membership fee. It opens up hundreds of discounts, including student restaurants and cheaper commuter tickets from VR and HSL.

A plastic student card with Debit MasterCard services offered by Danske Bank is free to all university students. Without the payment service, the card costs 15.10€ + delivery fees.

More information on different card options and delivery can be found on the Frank website.

Please note that after receiving your plastic student card, you will need to get a year tag for it. You can get one from AYY’s service office in Otaniemi, for example.

Health and well-being

FSHS

Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS) looks after the health of university students.

After paying the Student Union membership fee, you can receive help from FSHS in the areas of general, oral and mental health when you need it. Appointments are made by phone, and FSHS has a callback service. Contacting FSHS and general health appointments are always free of charge.

In order to use the services as efficiently as possible, you should create a user account for FSHS’s electronic Self service. You can use the service to handle your appointments and other health-related matters electronically.

You can use the services of any FSHS unit anywhere in Finland. When FSHS is closed or you are unable to book an appointment, you can use your local health center’s regular or on-call services.

FSHS units in the Helsinki metropolitan area:

  • Otaniemi: Otakaari 12, Espoo
  • Töölö: Töölönkatu 37 A, Helsinki

Other well-being services

Is your student life not going as it should? You don’t need to be alone with your problems!

If you have challenges related to your studies, you can contact your school’s student counseling services or the Aalto study psychologists.

Study psychologists guide and support students in challenges related to learning, motivation, self-regulation, stress management and studying capacity. You can reach the study psychologists via email: opintopsykologit@aalto.fi

You can turn to the Aalto chaplains if you want to have a confidential discussion about anything related to life, work, studying or relationships.

The Aalto chaplains are available to all members of Aalto regardless of religion or worldview. Contact them:

Visit the HSL website for more information and the student discount application form.

Routes and timetables for public transport can be found in the HSL Reittiopas service at www.reittiopas.fi

In June, a total of 34 apartments will be completed at Jämeräntaival 5 B, 30 of which are shared studio apartments. People can move in to the apartments starting from the 2nd of July.

The AYY Board has decided that all AYY’s members are given equal opportunity to apply for the Jämeräntaival 5 B apartments. Lots will be drawn to determine who gets an apartment.

The application process for the apartments differs somewhat from the usual:

– You can apply for the apartments between the 12th and 15th of June 2018.
– The place in the queue for all applications submitted within the deadline will be drawn by lot.
– The lots will be drawn within different score groups.
– After the 15th of June 2018, the applications will continue according to the normal queuing process.

A shared studio apartment is a cross between a shared apartment and a studio. Each tenant has a personal room with their own toilet/bathroom and a kitchenette, equipped with a fridge, freezer, oven and stove. Keeping the communal spaces clean and tidy is the responsibility of the tenants.

3. Retrieve your bike collected during the Junk Bike Collection before the end of the summer

The Otaniemi Junk Bike Collection came, saw and cleaned up!

All bikes in Otaniemi were marked with colorful bracelets in April. Bikes that still had the bracelet intact were collected at the end of May. If your bike was collected and you want it back, you have time until the start of September to retrieve it from storage against sufficient proof, such as a key that fits the lock of the bike.

Bike retrieval will be possible about once in every two weeks during the summer, and the exact dates will be announced on the Junk Bike Collection website and Facebook event. Please let us know that you’re coming at the latest on the previous day by filling out this form: https://lomake.ayy.fi/kampusjaosto/otaniemen-romupyorakerays/

All collected bikes that are in good condition will be sold in September. Then is your chance to buy yourself a working bicycle at an affordable price!

4. Take part in planning the Student Center by the 15th of June

Take part in the development work of the Student Center on the opiskelijakeskus.fi website!

The opiskelijakeskus.fi website is now open! Check them out, browse the ideas and add your own. The Student Center is a joint venture by the Aalto University Student Union (AYY), the Aalto University Business Students (KY) and Teknologföreningen (TF). The plan is to create a building for all students on the Otaniemi campus, next to the metro station entrance and the Harald Herlin Learning Center.

A Student Center seminar was held in April 2018, , johon osallistui edustajia erityisasemayhdistysten puheenjohtajien neuvostosta, edustajistosta ja AYY:n jaostoista. The goal of the seminar was to brainstorm what kinds of facilities, functions and services the center could have.

The ideas gathered onto the opiskelijakeskus.fi website are results of the seminar. Anyone can browse the ideas, like them and add their own ideas. We will go through the most popular ideas on Friday, the 15th of June, with further planning in mind. So, visit the website and add your own top ideas. What would you want the Student center to have?

The Board members in charge of the Student Center are Emma Savela (real estate) and Noora Tanska (community). Both can be reached via their emails at firstname.surname@ayy.fi.

5. Share your ideas on AYY’s advocacy policies by the 31st of July

In what societal questions should Aalto people be especially active in? How should AYY react to subsistence, equality and sustainable development?

The Aalto University Student Union is updating its policy papers this year. At the same time, the current policy papers will be combined into a single document. The idea is to create a document that ensures that AYY’s advocacy work is transparent and in line with the members’ opinions.

CULTURE AND THE YEAR OF ARTS

8. The Year of Arts blog series: 20 years of glorious metal at the heart of Otaniemi

In the Year of Arts blog series, Metal Club Mökä tells us about its activities as a herald of metal music and about the Mökäfest festival, held in Otaniemi in August.

9. A shifting piece of art to be built next to Väre

Artist Gloria Lauterbach’s piece “Kreuzstrasse” has won the Väre Wall Art competition, which sought for ideas for a piece of art on the 70-meter wall standing beside the new buildings, Väre and the Business school. The contest was open for every student of Aalto University and garnered a total of 26 contestants.

The winning design won the jury with its strength. Lauterbach is a postgrad student at the School of Arts and Design.

“The copper roof, green with patina of the ages and the birch growing from within depict slow change”, Lauterbach opens her plan. There is a wish for a participatory part in the piece, which the artist will design later together with the Aalto University Student Union.

The jury also decided to award the second-place piece and give an honorary mention. The second place was “Piiri” by information technology student Emil Fihlman and Arts postgrad Mollu Heino. The honorary mention was awarded to “Aalto Shape Shifters” by Arts student Anna Björklund.

SPORTS AND CAMPING

13. Smökki Cup 2018

The sun shines and the sand flies when the people in Otaniemi polish up on their beach volleyball skills. But who are the best players of them all?

The Sports Committee wants to find out once again this summer which is the toughest beach volleyball team in Otaniemi. The Sports Committee will organize the Smökki Cup on the 3rd of July on Smökki’s field, where beach pros compete with each other in a beach volleyball tournament.

The games are played around 18:00–21:00. So gather yourself a team and see who strikes the hardest!

The tournament is played among four-person teams, and participation in the tournament costs 8 € (2 €/player). In addition to a place in the tournament, teams will also receive four meal tickets that can be used to buy food at the official after-game party, the SmökkiAfterwork.

Teams participating in the tournament can bathe at Ossinsauna, which is just a short walk away from Smökki.
