Changes to the scoring of housing applications

Aalto University is concentrating its functions to Otaniemi with the integration of campuses and therefore no extra point for location is given anymore.

Previously, for example, students at the Arabia campus, received a location point (1 additional point) for all destinations in Helsinki (except Töölö). Correspondingly, students at the Otaniemi campus were given an extra point in Teekkarikylä and Leppävaara, but not in Helsinki.

Once the location point has been removed, the applications for studio apartments have been put in order according to the date of the application. Similarly, the departure of the location point has also affected the order of other housing queues.

The Representative Council decided to update the Housing Regulations in their 05/2017 meeting. The updated Housing Regulations came into effect on 1st June and are available on AYY’s website. More information about scoring of applications can be found here.

Changes in 2017 regarding general housing allowance as an AYY tenant

Students will be moved under the general housing allowance on the 1st of August 2017, meaning that the entire household’s income will affect the amount of the allowance. Below you can find the specific instructions for applying. The instructions apply to AYY tenants.

Shared apartment or a furnished shared apartment

AYY is drafting personal rental agreements to shared apartments, meaning that each tenant forms their own household. If you live in a shared apartment, apply for housing allowance alone. The income of other tenants does not affect the amount of received housing allowance.

Studio or a studio in a shared apartment

If you live alone in a studio or a studio in a shared apartment, your household only consists of you alone. People living in studios in shared apartments are not affected by the income of other tenants. People living alone apply for housing allowance alone.

If, however, you share a studio or a studio in a shared apartment with someone else, you consist of a shared household. Kela will always decree these households to be cohabiting, and the income of each person will affect the allowance. Apply for the allowance jointly.

Duplex, Three-room apartments and four-room apartments

Current situation

AYY is making friend- and family rental agreements to duplexes and three-and four-room apartments, which all have shared responsibilities. This means that people living in friend- and family agreements form one household, and the income of all will affect the allowance. People living in a duplex, three-room or four-room apartment with a shared rental agreement must apply for the allowance jointly.

If you are the only primary tenant in a duplex, three-or four-room apartment, and you have sub-letted a part of the apartment to one or more people, you may apply for the housing allowance alone. The sub-letters may also apply alone, if each sub-letter has their own separate sub-let rental agreement.

If you live alone, the situation is same as with people living in studios, and you may apply for the allowance alone.

AYY upcoming actions

AYY is currently undertaking a project to increase communal living. As a part of this project, apartments with several bedrooms are being converted to shared apartments and we are creating means where shared apartments could be applied to in the same way as friend apartments now. The aim is that on a long term AYY would have only shared apartments, shared studios, studios and family apartments available to its tenants. The timetable for these changes will be published to the tenants when they become relevant.

Current application situation

AYY has received an unusually large number of applications for apartments in April and May. This means that at the moment (4.5.2017) there are over 300 applications that are waiting to be checked and approved. It will take approximately two weeks for your application to be processed.

Your application on Domo says ‘needs approval’ until it has been processed and Domo changes the status into saying ‘queued’. Every application is processed at the housing office and scored in accordance with AYY’s housing scoring regulations. The application is placed in the housing queue based on the application date and the scores. When the application is processed at the housing office, the applicant can follow the progress of the queue in the Domo system and make possible changes to the application.

New AYY student housing tenement in Jätkäsaari completed in September

Aalto-yliopisto Student Union
Press release 28.03.2017
For immediate release

AYY board members visiting Jätkäsaari tenement in March 2017.

The new student housing tenement of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY) in Jätkäsaari by the seaside will be completed in September. The Atlantinkatu 7 building will have 122 apartments, most of which are one-room apartments. The building also has a communal sauna and some commercial spaces, to which suitable tenant businesses are still being sought.

”The Atlantinkatu building is the first building project to be fully complete from start to finish during AYY’s existence.  This is only the beginning, however, since the aim is to build over a thousand new apartments in the following ten years”, says housing and real-estate correspondent Board member Onni Lampi of AYY.

The building project started in the spring of 2016 and has progressed according to the set timetable, says AYY construction foreman Hannes Helminen. The building is designed by Sweco Architects Oy and the main contractor at the site is NCC Suomi.

”The importance of student living in the capital region is growing constantly. The apartments are a very concrete and important service to the members of the Student Union. As the Länsimetro completes, the Jätkäsaari building will be only 15 minutes away from the Otaniemi campus”, Lampi concludes.

The application process for the Atlantinkatu apartments opens to AYY members in April 2017. More info on the building and applications will be published at the start of April at www.ayy.fi
