4. Sano se suomeksi! campaign encourages international students to use the Finnish language
A campaign called Sano se suomeksi! is launched at Aalto University, which encourages international students to speak Finnish in everyday situations. Similar campaigns have been previously organised at other Finnish universities. Poor Finnish skills are one of the major obstacles for the employment of international students and any language skills help both employment and settling into Finnish society. The campaign also encourages the Finns to serve international students in Finnish.
In various service situations at the university, students can practise the Finnish language in practice. During the campaign, students can take care of their affairs in Finnish and collect signatures to their ”Finnish passport” at the same time. You can pick up the passport from the Aalto Language Centre, the Student Services Office and AYY’s office. After the campaign, those who have collected the highest number of entries will be rewarded. You can receive an entry when speaking Finnish in everyday situations in student restaurants, guild room, KY’s office or AYY. Other teaching and staff members at Aalto can also sign your passport after having a conversation in Finnish. The entry is made by signing your name, place and date to the passport. Detailed instructions for the staff are available on the back of the passport. The campaign will begin on 13 Jan and end on 14 March 2014. The campaign symbols are badges, which identify the students who participate in the campaign and the staff who are involved in the campaign. Service points included in the campaign also have Sano se suomeksi! poster on display. Aalto staff was informed about the campaign at the end of 2013, when campaign posters and badges were distributed. The international staff may also choose to participate in the collection of entries.
The campaign is organised in cooperation by the Language Centre, AYY and Aalto University. More information on the campaign is available on facebook site at www.facebook.com/SanoSeSuomeksiAtAalto. You may also contact Finnish Teaching Coordinator Inkeri Lehtimaja (inkeri.lehtimaja@aalto.fi) at the Language Centre or Study Coordinator at the School of Science Jaakko Kölhi (jaakko.kolhi@aalto.fi).
