2. AYY is looking for a Secretary General

Aalto University Student Union (AYY) has approximately 15,000 students. AYY employs more than 50 permanent employees and dozens of volunteer actors and approximately 200 associations operate within AYY. The student union’s policy priorities are strong advocacy and services. In addition, the student union offers its apartments for about 3,000 members. AYY’s property is approximately EUR 150 million and the annual turnover is approximately EUR 15 million.

We are looking for a full-time SECRETARY GENERAL

for the period 1 Sept 2013 – 31 Aug 2016.

The Secretary General’s role is to act as the supervisor of the secretariat in the non-profit sector and as a link between different operators in the student union. The Secretary General participates in AYY’s financial management, as well as in the meetings and activities of the Board, Representative Council and Financial Committee. In daily work, activity planning and continuous improvement have a large role. The Secretary General’s key duties also include work with interest groups and the representation of the student union.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the student union/organisational activities
  • Knowledge of financial management
  • Management skills
  • Ability to endure stress
  • Academic studies
  • Fluent Finnish language skills, Swedish and English language skills

The Secretary General’s position offers a wide range of challenges, a wide-ranging field of action and a competitive salary. The vibrant and inspiring atmosphere of our office is created by the student union’s active volunteers and highly skilled specialists. During your period of employment, you are entitled to live in AYY’s housing. The position includes a paid training session starting in May if possible.

The applications with CVs and salary requests are submitted to Teemu Halme, the secretary of the working group set by AYY’s Representative Council to prepare the election of the secretary general, to the address teemu.halme@ayy.fi by 12noon on 22 Feb 2012. Applications are acknowledged as received. Applications are confidentially handled by the secretary general’s election working group. Interviews will be held during the weeks 10-11. Based on the interviews, the working group will make a proposal on the most suitable candidate for AYY’s Representative Council which makes the final decision on the election of the Secretary General in April.

3. Annaleena Kuronen appointed as the chief editor of the student magazine Aino

Bachelor of Economics Annaleena Kuronen was elected as the new chief editor of the student magazine Aino of AaltoUniversity Student Union. The chief editor is responsible for the content of the magazine and acts as the supervisor of the editorial office. Kuronen will begin in her duty in February. Previously, Kuronen has worked as the chief editor of Kylteri magazine and as an assistant for Aino magazine. AYY’s student magazine is published four times a year. The aim is that the new Aino magazine will be published for the first time during the spring of 2013.

4. Apply for the Student Union’s Central Election Committee

In addition to other exciting affairs, the year of 2013 is the Representative Council election year for the student union. In the beating heart of the Representative Council elections, the elections are led by the Central Election Committee. Are you interested in making AYY’s next Representative Council elections THE best and most excellent elections so far?

The applications for the Central Election Committee are submitted through the electronic form at: https://lomake.ayy.fi/hallinto/kvl/

The member of the Central Election Committee cannot run as a candidate in the Representative Council elections in 2013. The Central Election Committee decides on voting and advance voting stations, reviews the candidate notifications and agreements on electoral alliances and coalitions, performs the vote count audit and supervises the general election procedure.

5. AYY’s housing keys from Töölö also in February and March

Keys to AYY’s housing in Helsinki are handled through Töölö Service Point. However, the service point is closed on Fridays.

In February and March, both moving dates happen to be Fridays. Therefore, AYY will organise service for Töölö Service Point on the moving dates in February and March. Keys are handled at Töölö Service Point as usual and you not have to agree on anything separately. Please return and collect your keys only from Töölö Service Point on 1 Feb and 1 March. The housing office in Otaniemi will NOT be able to receive the keys for apartments in Helsinki in order to prevent that new and old residents go to different locations and the keys will not change the owner.

The key service is available at Töölö Service Point according to regular opening hours between 10.30am-2.30pm.

6. AYY Shop survey

Are you interested in Aalto University students’ own university hoodies? Or do you want to express your wishes concerning the future by-products of AYY’s or Aalto?

The survey related to AYY Shop, which will open in the spring, is now open. By responding to the survey you will help to develop the products of AYY Shop to better match the preferences and wishes of all students. You can also suggest your own idea on university hoodies by e-mail to verkkokauppa@ayy.fi. The best idea wins cinema tickets!

In addition, three respondents will win the prize of two movie tickets. The survey is available in English.

7. AYY’s Annual Gala AFTERPARTY

Aalto University Student Union celebrates its third anniversary on 2 February. The event starts with a dinner and continues with the afterparty that is open for everyone. Tickets will be sold through the registration form, at schools, and at the front door for the price of €5.

The afterparty will take place in the Event Arena Bank (Unioninkatu 20, Helsinki) like the main event, and the doors open for the afterparty at 10:30 PM (note that if you want to enjoy the full programme, you should sign up for the main event). You have a chance to conquer the dance floor or you can enjoy champagne at the bar while listening to the DJs. There will be bus transport to Arabia and Otaniemi during the night.

8. 1st application round of TTE-Fund in 2013, DL Sun, 3 Feb

The first application round of TTE-Fund in 2013 is open! The fund may grant financial aid for all AYY members and the association within it. TTE-Fund supports visible activities that reach for the stars and make other people excited.

You can apply for grants from TTE-Fund in two ways: through the application rounds arranged approximately three times a year and through the continuous application period which is open during the academic terms. During the continuous application period, you can apply for the grants with the maximum of €1000, whereas the amount of project grants during the actual application rounds is not limited.

The first application round of 2013 will end on Sunday, 3 Feb 2013, at 11.59pm. Instructions for the application and its attachments are available on the website of the fund at http://tter.ayy.fi/. The grant can be applied for with an online form which is available at: http://tter.ayy.fi/hae-avustusta/

9. Aalto in Africa

Aalto in Africa is a student-driven innovation project, taking 50 students, in addition to staff members and other partners from Aalto University through the Zambian wilderness all the way to Cape Town, South Africa. Our goal is to learn from and co-create with local communities to achieve unique learning experiences for all.

Our first open info event will be organized on Wednesday, 30 January at the Stage in Design Factory at 6pm. Come to hear more about the project and share your ideas with us!

10. Special offer for students from Espoo Blues

Espoo Blues Hockey Club invites Aalto University students to Blues-Ilves match played at Barona Arena at an affordable price of €9. The package includes the ticket, frankfurter mug offered by HK and the first 400 students get a free beer/cider offered by Koff. After the match, the first 100 persons have access to the free shuttle bus to the city centre of Helsinki. The evening programme is as follows:

  • 16.30 gathering at the entrance of Club
  • 16.45 food and beverage serving at Blue Zone restaurant
  • 17.15 Espoo Blues video greeting on the screen
  • 17.30-18.30 networking among higher education students. Espoo Blues representatives are also present.

12. Did the World Design Capital year reach its objectives?

Give your opinion and win a book prize!

The World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 year aimed at promoting and supporting cultural, social and economic utilisation of design. One of the objectives was to offer opportunities for residents to participate in improving their own living environment. The participation of students in developing their living environment and addressing their needs was considered as one of the key goals of the World Design Capital year.

Do you think that World Design Capital year reached its objectives? The questionnaire is open between14 January–3 February 2013. It takes about 5 minutes to fill it in. A gift voucher to Aalto ARTS Books (value 40 euro) and 5 WDC CDs will be raffled among the respondents.

13. ESN Aalto: Erasmus in School Info Session

Exchange students, let’s make your time in Finland more meaningful than alcohol & parties! 14. Students’ common responsibility campaign in the centre of Helsinki on 6 Feb

Students’ common responsibility campaign in the centre of Helsinki at 11am-6pm on Wednesday, 6 Feb 2013.

Come and collect funds alone, with your friend or with a larger group for an hour or two and you will help lonely elderly people in Finland and Cambodia.

  • Get a vest and a collection box from Kamppi Chapel at Narinkka Square. Take you ID with you. The distribution point of collection boxes is open at 11am–5pm.
  • Hot drinks and snacks are provided.
  • Collectors receive free admission to Circus.

Evening party from 10pm onwards at The Circus (Salomonkatu 1−3). With the student card the admission fee is €6.5, admission costs €10 for others. Collectors have free admission. Read more about the party.

15. Stand-up comedy at Smökki

After a creative break, the stand-up club will begin again in Otaniemi. The event venue is Servin Mökki and we will have four nights where four excellent comedians will perform. The evenings are hosted by Comic Man Ferrix Hovi.

16. Shrovetide celebrations on 12 Feb @Ullis

On Shrove Tuesday, the 12th of February, it is time to find you something that passes for a sled and head over to Kaivopuisto, Helsinki! Students from all the schools are showing up for an action-packed afternoon outdoors – so why not join as well???

The most daring and ambitious take part in the legendary downhill race, where teams pilot their home-made sleds down the Ullanlinnanmäki hillside in the hope of winning the grand prize! They are judged not only on their run’s distance, but creativity and showmanship as well. Enter the race by signing up at www.laskiaisrieha.fi or on the spot in Kaivopuisto, but do it before 2PM on Shrove Tuesday!

In addition to the race there will be all kinds of activities including smaller competitions and live music. Of course, the hill is also open for casual sledders. The best time to enjoy outdoors is between 1PM and 5PM. Grab a sled, dress warmly and come join the festivities!

17. Biofuel day at Design Factory on 8 Feb

The biofuel day is a seminar organised by Chemistry Guild, Guild of Forest Products and Process Technology Club, where the leading companies in the field present their latest projects and know-how related to biofuels. The companies involved include at least VTT, UPM, Vapo and St1.

The day, which consists of the seminar and dinner, is organised from 2pm onwards on 8 Feb 2013 at Aalto University Design Factory (Betonimiehenkuja 5c) in Otaniemi. The event welcomes all Aalto members interested in biofuels, including students, personnel and alumni.

Registration will open on the website of the event (http://www.kemistikilta.fi/biopolttoainepaiva) at 12noon on 23 Jan 2013 and close at 12noon on3 Feb 2013. The event costs EUR 5. You should be quick as there are only 25 seats reserved for the staff and students outside the organising guilds. The event offers interesting information, food, drinks and networking! More information about the event will be updated on the event website. Dresscode: Smart&casual. The event is held in Finnish.
